1161  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: low-cost hardware wallet for less than 10 dollars on: May 01, 2023, 12:06:09 PM
I keep getting that inner voice telling  me cheap is expensive and seeing that price I think in the long run someone will be paying for it one way or another...

Why is this wallet so cheap compared to whats on the market?

For how long has this been on the market and what "negative" reviews does it have?

Besides its low price, why should any one be interested in this wallet??

It's not a wallet. It's the OS for a wallet that you can run on a cheap common board.
There are plenty out there that are good, there are also a lot as I pointed out in my above post that are disposable.
Sometimes you get both in the same lot.

There are better ones but they cost more.

And if you are not someone who likes to tinker, do you really want to deal with it when you can get a boxed supported product for under $100?

1162  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: How often do you check your farm, steps to gain some peace of mind. on: April 30, 2023, 09:56:15 PM
Since my miners are spread far and wide I just rely on the pools to email me when one drops off.
Probably not the best way, by all my miners are old and paid for and the power is a fixed cost to a certain point so it's all profit.
Back in the day it was different but now, it's more of a good enough so long as most are OK theory. If one of my S9 is down for a full day it's only going to be $1 in lost profit. The L3+ units only generate about $1.25 a day.

Not worth stressing about.

Without getting into the secure element / no secure element thing at the moment
The issue with doing it this was is the fact that these lower end development boards are for lack of better wording, disposable.
I cannot say with any certainty that getting a Jade from Blockstream will be any better, but I can say that I ewasted about 10 of the development boards for a customer a few months ago. (Fine, I threw them in a box to take to the recycle place....they will get there sooner or later)

They are built to be tinkered with but they are not particularly sturdy. You CAN get better ones, but they cost closer to $30. At that point you are 1/2 way to getting a finished boxed product.

*This is coming from the US, I can't comment on costs for these things in other parts of the world.

1164  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: The Green Stuff On PCB's & Hashboards - Potential Shorting Issue on: April 30, 2023, 02:31:46 PM
Is this what you are talking about?

https://www.ebay.com/itm/115488349422

Being a hack I have actually used automotive gasket sealer (make sure it's the non metallic) to protect some things on boards.
https://www.permatex.com/
I don't recommend my way but it's a lot easier to find.

Remember to clean thoroughly before sealing or you could be sealing moisture and crud in there.

1165  Economy / Exchanges / Re: [Table] Crypto Exchanges Assets Transparency on: April 30, 2023, 02:21:05 PM
I guess another part of the question is when the exchange has different operating entities in different countries how are the numbers calculated?
i.e. Is Binance all of binance including binance.us and all the other places that where it's separate from the parent or is it just binance.com

Not sure if it matters but it would change some things.

1166  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: How much percent blockchain on 500GB SSD? on: April 30, 2023, 01:08:40 PM
...Did anybody try this on 500GB-512GB SSD or HDD? I'd like to know the percentage downloaded...

Depending on how you system handles some things you may wind up with corruption on the last few files.
Does it write till it's full and leave a truncated file, how does it handle any temp files that are on there and so on.
Some things are in the hands of the OS others are are part of the drive controller.

Having seen people move files that were well and truly corrupted because they filled a cheap SSD with a controller that did not handle things properly I can say it's not worth trying to cram it all into a space that it will not fit in and if it does it will outgrow it in a few weeks anyway.

1167  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Too many bills killing crypto on: April 29, 2023, 05:11:05 PM
This has been discussed and discussed again.

It's happening and despite a lot of people complaining about it in the end although it will just about kill privacy and bring on more taxes since you would not be able to hide. It will probably cause a major run up in crypto price.

There are a lot of people who will not invest now because of the wide open nature of crypto and they are a bit risk adverse. Give them some stability and they will buy.
There are a lot of institutions that want to invest but their risk management department will not let them. Give them more rules and guides and they will invest.
And so on.

The people who want their privacy will either adapt or leave. But, more then likely for every 1 person that leaves 10 will come in. And that is a conservative number from what opinion polls and research have been saying.

1168  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Downloading the blockchain over public WiFi on: April 29, 2023, 03:46:48 PM
Some Cafes block Bitcoin
Wait, what? Which cafeterias try to block Bitcoin? Also, what do you mean they "block" Bitcoin? There is no central server to prohibit access to. Did you perhaps mean bitcoin.org?

I'd advice you to do everything through Tor. The last thing you want, especially if the cafeteria is bitcoin-unfriendly, is to have some merchant suing you for whatever. With Tor the Internet provider, right as well as the router admin, know absolutely nothing. Without it, it's trivial to notice someone's syncing the Bitcoin network.
\

They block port 8333. Or a lot of times it's the other way, they only allow traffic on ports 80 (http) and 443 (https) and everything else is blocked. They may allow certain mail RECEIVING ports (110,143,993,995) and perhaps 587 for authenticated mail send but that's it. It's free, but they don't want to deal with the hassle of people doing anything other then browsing the web. So it's all blocked. I do that for a lot of my customers who want to offer public Wi-Fi. It really is more of free web browsing, for anything else get your own internet.

Depending on the equipment you use and the amount of configuration you want to put into it you can even block TOR to a certain extent.

<shrug>

Probably does not matter since there are enough places that don't block things.

1169  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [COLLABORATIVE CUSTODY] Your custody partner for your bitcoin journey. on: April 29, 2023, 01:45:44 PM
Or you can give the 3rd mutlisig to a relative. Or put it in a bank vault. Or use a well known product like Blockstream Green. Or use something more secure like a hardware wallet with the recovery seed someplace safe.

It's an answer in search of a question. The issue is the question does not exist, and similar questions already have better answers.

Not saying it's totally bad, just not really needed.

1170  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Having issues connecting electrum with bitcoin with bwt after updating core on: April 29, 2023, 12:34:28 PM
...
I think the core version 23,24 changed some things and that i why it is not working. Can i raise this issue to the dev team?
...
also are there any drawback using 22.1.0 version?

I would open an issue on github with the BWT people, but since as NeuroticFish pointed out it's been 2 years since their last update so they might have abandoned it.

Running 22.x.x short term will probably not matter, but it's not a solution. Over time you will miss out on features & security updates & other changes.

Also as NeuroticFish said, there are other options for a back end electrum server that are still actively being updated. You should probably take a look at one of those.

If you do not want to deal with it yourself there are a few prepackaged virtual machine nodes in a box like mynodebtc that would do it all for you.

-Dave
1171  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Can I run MyNode on windows? on: April 29, 2023, 12:26:12 PM
Yes, myNode is OS which comes with many pre-installed software. That's why they provide image file for some SBC device and VirtualBox rather than executable file. Although if you dive deeper, they also provide script to install myNode on existing Linux OS[1].

[1] https://github.com/mynodebtc/mynode#install-on-existing-system-beta

Thanks, I guess this means I need to have a machine dedicated for this purpose. (or a VM as people have already said)

Yes, but it does not have to be that powerful. A 6th gen i5 with 8GB ram and a 1TB SSD are overkill.
I don't know where in the world you are, but in the US that is well under $200 in a retail setup and $150 if you get it thought a Craigslist / local ad.

You can go lower, it still works just slower. Once the initial sync is done you probably would never notice a difference.

If you don't mind used mechanical drives instead of SSD, 1TB are just about scrap value now (once again here in the US) I do lots of 10 for $75 on Craigslist and usually wind up taking $50 or less. YMMV

I would go for a VM to start to see if it really is something you want to do. And if it works for you then you can always spin up a dedicated device.

1172  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Guys pls help with these TF.. why are they stuck?? Frustrated... on: April 28, 2023, 07:26:37 PM
They both seem to have gone through.
OP, looking at your post history you seem to keep having this issue of stuck low fee transactions.

When you are getting payments take a look at the fee paid vs what the current fees are for getting into the next few blocks.
Don't just think that it was 10 sat/VB a few hours ago so that should be fine now. That number can vary a lot in a short time.

If someone is sending to you and lowballs the fee make them wait to get paid.

1173  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: When Trustwallet doesn't show incoming transactions on: April 28, 2023, 05:07:44 PM
Just saw this post, but yes as others have said this issue has been going on with TrustWallet for a while.
AND also as others have said don't trust them.

Back to the matter at hand, if you do switch to another wallet. DO NOT reuse your recovery phrase. Create a new one from scratch.
Just send all your funds to the new addresses and be done.

There seem to be more and more wallets that are slowly spinning themselves into the ground. No need to go along for the ride. If their support is lacking now, with your coins just not being displayed, how do you think it's going to be if there is a real issue.

1174  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Electrum server on Windows: Fulcrum on: April 28, 2023, 03:36:58 PM
Since I never ran it I'm trying it out now. Put a 1TB spinning drive in a 4th gen i3 with 8GB of ram and am in the process of download the blockchain now.
Somebody remind me in a week to take a look at how it's going. I really hate spinning drives but it's all I have for larger then 512GB in the office. All the real ones are in the DC.

Looks interesting since it's a compiled executable along with core it should allow people who 'don't know computers' to run their own electrum server without too much effort. Which is good for privacy.

1175  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Automatic payment for affiliates with LN on: April 28, 2023, 03:27:46 PM
lightning address is LNURL all it does is make something a bit more human readable.
luridbank39@walletofsatoshi.com is a lot easier to send to then:
lnurl1dp68gurn8ghj7ampd3kx2ar0veekzar0wd5xjtnrdakj7tnhv4kxctttdehhwm30d3h82unvw qhkcatjd9jxyctwdvenj3nlh0u

https://github.com/andrerfneves/lightning-address/blob/master/README.md

With that being said LNRUL has been in use for over 2 years in a lot of wallets. If not every day, I use them several times a week with 0 issues. I have a lot of things out there that just get payments to then with no issues.

1176  Economy / Exchanges / Re: What do you actaully consider KYC in terms of information that has to be given on: April 28, 2023, 03:14:36 PM
You know that you can't be sure of the KYC documents a centralized exchange will ask of you throughout the time you are going to use them, because they asked for a phone number and an email address at the beginning does not mean they cannot confiscate your funds later on and ask for more personal information which you must submit or forfeit the funds to them.

In their terms of service they also warn that you should not submit fake documents, so if after submitting fake documents to use the exchange and later on they ask for more informatiom about you and the details you submit later somehow proves that the initial documents were forged, they would lock the account, seize your money and accuse the user of fraud or money laundering. Kyc is kyc, and it is always a big deal because you can't predict what the exchange will do in the future.

There is a difference between submitting fake documents and giving info that could be faked.

i.e. 123-456-7890 is not *my* phone number. But I buy bulk things at auctions and you would be amazed of how many cell phones I wind up with that still are active after sitting in storage for years. If it can get a SMS it's good enough for me for the moment.

Office Suite 810 does not exist where I work. But all the mail in the building comes to a common space, so it would just get thrown in the pile if you need to get something shipped there.

And so on.

1177  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: replacement for pow on: April 27, 2023, 10:22:40 PM
Bitcoin's decentralized and permissionless nature is its biggest advantage but also its biggest weakness: it's too easy to create fake nodes.
...

Nodes are not important, it's the miners that matter. You can spin up all the nodes you want and change anything you want with them. Unless the miners see and then mine the transactions that those nodes provide it does not matter. AND THEY WILL NOT MINE THEM since they would not be valid transactions on the network so the miners nodes would reject them. Period. Full stop.

There is zero reason to change the way BTC works. It is functioning with no issues. If you want to fork off and make an altcoin, that is fine. If you come up with a better way of doing it, people will follow. If not, then they will not.

1178  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: 12-word seed vs 24-word seed? This seems pretty interesting on: April 27, 2023, 08:17:51 PM
So to make it simple:

1) Keep your seed safe and private (Duh!)
2) Longer things are more difficult to compromise then shorter things when done properly (Duh!)
3) Security is only as strong at it's weakest link (Duh!)

The 12 word thing was done before, and discussed to death. But it is good to bring it up now and then to remind people about security.

-Dave
1179  Economy / Exchanges / What do you actaully consider KYC in terms of information that has to be given on: April 27, 2023, 05:40:04 PM
With more and more exchanges asking for KYC, and some people being a bit more privacy oriented / or even just caring about it then others. I was just wondering what people thought of KYC info vs. 'whatever info'

Picking on localcoinswap.com they ask for an email address to sign up that then then send a code to for verification and then a cell phone that they can send a text to.

That's it. But some people consider that KYC. I look at it as since I have a few phone numbers that cannot be tracked back to me [no real reason just wound up with them] that it's not KYC. Send me a text, to that number I really don't care.

Some places go deeper and ask for an address and other things but really never verify it. I have a few places that think I live in a building that was torn down a few years ago.

Then you have the 'full anal probe' KYC

So, for me the 1st 2 are not a big deal. It's just the last one that *I* think is KYC.

What do the rest of you think? And do you really care so long as there are non KYC options.

1180  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Coinomi wallet hacked, all funds stolen on: April 27, 2023, 04:06:40 PM
It's sad that there has been theft of assets from other communities here in the crypto space. Both of you are retired and then the same thing happened.

As far as I know, this coinomi does not provide the latest updates on their social media platforms. Their last announcement on twitter was in April 2022, after these times they have not given any latest plan and development for the community of coinomi and there are many users complaining about it.

IMO Coinomi has gone from an active project to a 'side hobby' of whoever is maintains it.
Their social media is just about dead. XMR and other coins are having issues and a few other minor things come to mind.

This is not to say it's any less safe then it was or worse then any other closed source hot wallet, just that it's not as actively supported as it once was.
The flip side is that there are some actively supported wallets that do suck so there is that......

Just as people have issues it looks like it's going to fall more on the community to support them then Coinomi.
