1401  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Shout outs from Seattle on: June 15, 2011, 03:04:44 PM
I've since talked to two bitcoiners over PMs who turned out to be from Seattle, but nobody is posting here. Anybody? Maybe you are all locked in the newbie section . . .
1402  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: theymos deserves a big kudos! on: June 15, 2011, 03:03:29 PM
Before if someone were to steal blockexplorers logs, the theif would be able to associate A LOT of bitcoin addresses with IP addresses.
Anyone who visited their own addresses without TOR would most likely be the only one who visited it. That would make addresses for YEARS have
a unique IP. I'm sure many have used his service!

After talking with thymos, despit being busy he agreed to anonimize the logs that are month old!

Thank you theymos for helping bitcoiners remain anonymous!
Feel free to tip him as a thanks! (I did!  Grin)

A long time ago I sent Theymos a 20BTC tip for making a change to blockexplorer.com to support lazy web developers who want to check if they got some BTC without installing anything special on a website.

Now that tip is worth a LOT more. Smiley

We should also thank him for his work on this forum.
1403  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin7.com on: June 15, 2011, 02:39:08 PM
WARNING! Search this forum for "Bitcoin7"

There are a lot of bad signs, including much of the text on the site being ripped straight from TradeHill.com

This COULD mean they are just trying to get something up quickly, but it could also mean this is a scam. Proceed at your own risk!!
1404  Other / Meta / Re: Let the Newbies back in? on: June 15, 2011, 02:27:16 PM
This is certainly not the best solution, and I never intended it to be permanent. I have a long-term solution in mind: A new jr. moderator position is added with no moderation ability over established posters. Newbies can post freely, but their posts are subject to more strict moderation by the many jr. moderators. All newbie posts are additionally available on a single page for review by all members for moderation/reporting.

The reporting system also needs to be enhanced, and moderation needs to be made easier.

This requires extensive modifications to SMF, so we'll have to make do with the "newbies" section until I get time to code it or someone contributes the code. I think the section has been pretty successful in containing trolling, spamming, and repeat questions: the only downside is that it is annoying and drives away potential contributors.

I've never been annoyed by newbie posts. I'd much rather ignore the occasional display of ignorance than create an elitist/unwelcoming atmosphere.

Personally, I read a ton about bitcoin before I ever posted even one comment. I think that is probably the more common scenario.
1405  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin7.com on: June 15, 2011, 02:01:34 PM
Anybody out there have experience trading there?  It looks like their "buy it now" price is $15/BTC.  That seems way cheap.  What's to stop someone from engaging in a massive amount of arbitrage?  Is that price for real?  Is Bitcoin7.com for real?

Thanks

Don't make people copy/paste/type. Here's the link: https://bitcoin7.com/

This is a really nice-looking site. Exciting!
1406  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Cooperative mining (1.5Thash/s) on: June 15, 2011, 01:57:03 PM
slush, how long do we have to switch to api.bitcoin.cz before mining.bitcoin.cz stops accepting work?

Bitcoin on Freedomain Radio with Stefan Molyneux
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygoqDBfjimM

This interview of Bruce Wagner is absolutely fantastic (warning: it is long).
1408  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin price increases are just getting started on: June 14, 2011, 06:37:21 PM
This video interview is great:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygoqDBfjimM

It's Bruce Wagner describing bitcoin, and he goes into detail on what bitcoins could be worth someday. He describes something similar to my logic from post #1.

(Warning, it's a LONG interview, but worth it).
1409  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Cooperative mining (1.5Thash/s) on: June 14, 2011, 04:44:14 PM
I'm having lot of fun with another attack, but looks like IP whitelist really works. There is significant packet loss, but mining is still up. Without whitelist it would be already down completely, like earlier today. There is important ongoing change in pool architecture, so:

Please point your miners against api.bitcoin.cz

If you already changed miners to mining2.bitcoin.cz, you don't need change anything. I'll need to split website and mining backend to separate machines, so mining cannot use same IP as website anymore. Website will be still on mining.bitcoin.cz, miners on api.bitcoin.cz .

I'll send email to all registered users with all necessary changes with all that summary about IP whitelisting and necessary changes in miner configuration. I believe that this changes and updates will make pool more robust in future attacks.

Hey slush, how long do I have to change my miners over to api.bitcoin.cz before mining.bitcoin.cz stops accepting work?

I love it. Donation sent.
1411  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin price increases are just getting started on: June 13, 2011, 11:53:17 PM

Ah, yes.  But those assumptions could take decades to come to fruition.  They have almost zero bearing on what the value of a bitcoin will be next week or next year.

I guess everyone will decide what time-frame they care about. I personally am expecting additional massive increases in bitcoin prices in the coming years, so I have no problem holding bitcoins through these fluctuations.
1412  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin price increases are just getting started on: June 13, 2011, 11:42:23 PM

What math?  Are you talking about guessing the 'proper' value of a bitcoin, based upon assumptions of the size of the (non-speculation based) Bitcoin economy?  Because it's a rediculous assertion that you, me or anyone can actually know what that is.  We can't even get a decent guess without first knowing how much trade goes on within such walled gardens as SilkRoad, OTC or BlackMarket.  Just looking at the volume of trade on those currency trading sites like MtGox doesn't tell you anything of usefullness, except that the market price is what the market price says that it is.

Not math specifically. Rather, the logic of my first post in this thread, which yields an equation you can plug numbers into.

I in no way assert that one can know the numbers to plug in with any precision. Rather, I assert that any reasonable guess at the numbers yields a per-bitcoin value orders of magnitude higher than current prices.

dacoinminster, finally I see that I am not crazy because our reasoning pretty much agrees: http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=7715.msg167918#msg167918

I have not met _one_ person who agrees with this reasoning. They all say nothing and ignore what I just said. I guess it gets discarded by peoples bullshit filter quickly before they can intellectually evaluate it. It is too outrageous.

Yes, I haven't seen a good argument against this logic (although I personally put different numbers into the equation). No matter how you do the math though, the current price of a bitcoin seems laughably low.
1414  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Bitoption.org -- ESCROWED LIVE Bitcoin Options Trading on: June 13, 2011, 10:46:51 PM
Hans, as you say!

However, we'll get there; there will be a tipping point in terms of usefulness, and until then, it will take a little more work to make the money.

Re: Money, yes, if you have no BTC, it takes some time to get some, and then send over. I'm guessing you guys are super-bears, so you only wish to be in BTC for a few moments max.

If you are interested in my use case: I believe btc will gradually rise over the next 5-10 years to 200k$ per btc. I would like to purchase options which will explode like an atomic bomb if my expectations are met - and fizzle in all other cases to 0. Once I figure out how to do that I will purchase. I would also agree to buy a contract for a shorter term but because btc is very volatile this is risky - and it would have to be far better than just buying btc directly.

This is more or less my situation (but with a different price target). If I saw options to sell bitcoins at $50 to $100 each three years from now, I would be very tempted to put some money down.

I should add that before I would put significant money into a system like this for a significant time, I would want some assurance that the person running it isn't going to just disappear with the bitcoins someday. For instance, posting bond with a trusted forum member would be a good start. I did that for my own little futures experiment (see sig).

To get really big, you are going to have to develop big trust somehow. I have no idea what that would take, but I know you haven't earned it yet.
1415  Economy / Marketplace / Re: xkcd's bitcoin hole on: June 13, 2011, 10:34:43 PM
What amuses me about this is that we can still send bitcoins to that address, and there is nothing he can do to stop us

The Economist - "Virtual curreny:Bits and bob"

http://www.economist.com/blogs/babbage/2011/06/virtual-currency

That is the best description of bitcoins I have ever seen in mainstream media. I can't believe how deep they went into the cryptography behind it. Either the author understands the concepts very well, or he knows somebody who does.

On the other hand, even with their presumably very intelligent readership, a lot of people are going to have a glazed look in their eye after trying to read all that.

1417  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Bitoption.org -- ESCROWED LIVE Bitcoin Options Trading on: June 13, 2011, 03:13:30 PM
Looks like there were some insane price swings over the last few days. Did anybody make a killing trading options during that time?
1418  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Bet on bitcoin future price here (July 1st, 2011) on: June 10, 2011, 08:00:31 PM
Finally are you going to pick the winners in a range of +/- $0.5 around the last, or +/- 5% as you suggested later?
To be fair with people who don't bother reading the whole thread, rules should be set once and for all, but that's your call.
Is the limit inclusive? For instance, if I have one bet at $5 and one at $6, and the final price falls on $5.5, are both of my bets included in the +/- $0.5 range and both accounted for to calculate my share in the payoff?

The 5% thing was a "maybe for next time" idea. The rules are set in post #1 and will not change, except as needed for clarification.

Regarding inclusive bets, that is a good question which is not addressed in post #1. I doubt that situation will arise, but if it does, I think I HAVE to make them inclusive. It's much better to have an extra winner than to have someone be exactly $0.50 away and be excluded by a technicality.

Post #1 has been updated accordingly. It now says:

Quote
a) 98% of the pot will go to the winners (those within + or - $0.50 of the final value, inclusive)

Apologies for the necromancy . . .

Necromancy?! This is my favorite thread! This thread will die when I do!
1420  Economy / Marketplace / Re: BTC/USD futures settled in BTC exchange (alpha version) on: June 10, 2011, 01:20:39 PM
A few more comments:

 - I think it would be better to take your commission out of the trade/contract than out of the order. If for no other reason, do it that way because that is the way real exchanges do it.

 - It's after midnight GMT, but my order is still live. Is the maturity date not decided until someone takes the other side? People are going to want to set the maturity date at the time they place the order, IMHO

 - You really ought to seed the exchange with some orders of your own money, even if they are not attractive orders (buys below the spot, sells above the spot). Otherwise people will assume that you don't trust the exchange with your own money.

 - Have you considered posting bond to increase your trustworthiness? (see how I did it in my "futures" thread in my sig)

 - You're going to need your own domain name before people will take this service seriously

Thanks for doing this!
