Economy / Marketplace / Re: BTC/USD futures settled in BTC exchange (alpha version)

Don't despair yet! I'm poking around the site right now.
Edit: I deposited 0.03 BTC. I placed a "buy" order at $30 for 0.03 BTC with maturity +1. I think that should be attractive to anyone wanting to short bitcoins since (I think) I am offering a higher settlement price than the current price.
Questions:
- If someone takes the other side of my bet, what time do you settle the contract tomorrow? - It looks like I can't cancel the bet and put a longer maturity on it? - You say you charge a fee to place a bet, but I was able to wager the entire 0.03 BTC I deposited. Shouldn't the fee have been subtracted first?

The link above is worth commenting on. The title of the post is "US Senate drafting anti Bitcoin law", and the text was obviously written by someone in a big hurry or who is not a native English speaker. They make some outrageous claims: Democratic Senators Charles Schumer of New York and Joe Manchin of West Virginia are in the process of drafting an anti-bitcoin law that would make trading or using the bitcoin currency illegal in the United States. The draconian law (from what we have seen) would make ANY trades in the currency illegal. They are stating that the currency is constitutional. They are citing that congress only has the right to print money. U.S. Constitution – Article 1 Section 8 To coin Money, regulate the Value thereof, and of foreign Coin, and fix the Standard of Weights and Measures; Hence the argument is that bitcoins are already illegal. Regardless the currency is under attack. http://Inflation.Me has become the central rallying point to save the online currency. The site is accepting bitcoin donations.. The whole problem with bitcoins is that they are out of the control of the Federal Reserve, this most likely has no where to go but bad. The article offers no proof of these claims, and appears designed (IMHO) to drive down bitcoin prices. Amusingly, the http://inflation.me link was useful enough to provide a link to another bitcoin article: The Future of Money Is Online http://bigthink.com/ideas/38809

Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Craigslist Posting

You could have found me just by searching these forums for craigslist http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=8200.0I got chewed out for that ebay auction, and they told me to never do it again. Here is the text from it: Radeon HD 5870 AS-IS (support free video cards!)
Yes, I'm selling this damaged 5870 for $210. There is a story here . . .
If you've been checking your local Craigslist site looking for this video card, you probably already know that some weirdo is reimbursing people who purchase a 5770 or 5870 if they let him use the card for parallel computing when the PC isn't in use. Well, that weirdo is me!
I've been paying people to buy these cards left and right, and as a result, I'm now famous. My famous/weirdo self having owned this card makes it extremely valuable, and makes up for its busted-up state.
I bought this card used, and when I got it home and it didn't work, I knew I had been ripped off. I was so angry that I took a baseball bat and beat this video card to death. This card is CRACKED, DENTED, and IN MORE THAN ONE PIECE. You should NOT expect the card or any component of it to work in any way.
By buying this video card, you will enable me to give more working 5870 cards away. You'll be supporting my generosity, and you'll get this broken card which is EASILY worth $210 since it was owned by me.
But wait, there's more! If you buy it, I will sign the video card and write a brief note on it, congratulating you on your keen sense of value.
Please DO NOT contact me asking how to get a free 5770 or 5870 video card. I want to continue to give working 5770s and 5870s away to other people, but I want YOU to pay $210 for this destroyed one.
Q: Hi, Interesting story but I was wondering if are you willing to sell this for $30? I have no intention of low balling you but I mean for a non working card its not that bad of a deal. Can you please indicate which company is it from? Thanks. Feb-21-11 A: $30?! I should say not! This card is not worth one penny less than $210. As for the manufacturer, I believe it is a Sapphire card, but it is difficult to tell. This card has been beaten so badly it may not be identifiable other than by dental records.

Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin = the Anti-mark of the beast

It's funny. If you would have told me prior to bitcoin that shortly we would have a world currency that was totally digital I don't know what i would have thought. I probably would have thought "the bad guys won". Little would I have known that this currency would not only have as much freedom as cash... but even more. Much more. No bailouts, no inflation, no human manipulation through unjust regulation, no hyper-trading, no fees, no middlemen, no banks, no interest, you can send money to anyone in the world in a few minutes and even more - we are just getting started. This is bitcoin. If you are new here this is the anti-mark of the beast. I have thought about this exact thing. The Bible predicts that in the end times, all buying and selling will be tightly controlled by a central authority, and one will need "the mark of the beast" to engage in any economic activity (Revelation 13:17–18). Bitcoin is the opposite of that, but I can imagine that the backlash against bitcoin could create exactly that scenario. Conclusion: all good Christians should own bitcoin as preparation for that time

Awesome! I just booked a B&B for our anniversary. If one of them in my area accepted bitcoins, I would have chosen them over any other. But I would pay with my credit card. What kind of moron would part with a bitcoin?

I'm a little disappointed that there was no poll option for "it is inevitable, but concerned citizens should do their best to help law enforcement catch anyone involved"
That's how I feel about the Silk Road too, incidentally.

Oh wow. The MtGox bid is 30.7899 and the TradeHill ask is 30
Even counting for fees, this is free money to anyone who has an account both places (look up arbitrage).
I never thought I would actually see it happen. In stocks a clear arbitrage opportunity is always gone in milliseconds, but this has persisted for minutes!
Yet another thing we will probably never see again (once volume picks up on TradeHill)

OK. Get this: I just saw my trade partially execute. My price (29.9999) was actually on the ticker, and when I checked my dashboard, I saw that it correctly showed part of my BTC sold, and part still for sale.
Sweeeeeeeeeeeeet.
I'll probably never get to do that again.
edit: To make things even more complicated, I canceled my 29.9999 sell order (when MtGox blew past my price), and the rest of my BTC are hanging out at 34.9999
Come and get them!

Have you guys seen the spread over at http://www.tradehill.com ? $20 to $28 right now. Lots of room to be a market maker there. They are just getting started, but from a features and fees standpoint, they will give MtGox a run for their money. You can get a 10% discount on all fees forever if you sign up using this code: TH-R1168
