1021  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: colored bitcoins/distributed exchanges proof-of-concept on: November 14, 2012, 07:14:24 PM
I just found this thread, and I am so ridiculously excited. For years I have been telling everyone that this sort of additional structure built on top of bitcoins is going to be what makes bitcoin really take off.

KillerStorm: Please PLEASE take a look at the whitepaper I wrote on this topic a few months ago: https://sites.google.com/site/2ndbtcwpaper/2ndBitcoinWhitepaper.pdf

I'm not saying you should implement what I describe there, but in that paper I describe solutions to several of the problems you are facing, such as how to handle distributed buying and selling of colored coins without modifying the bitcoin protocol.

Thanks for doing this; you can bet I'll be watching closely now that I know someone is actually writing code for this. I would be coding it myself if I could find the time.
1022  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Trust No One on: October 04, 2012, 10:04:59 PM
Seriously. Don't trust the exchanges, don't trust online wallet services, don't trust your anti-virus software, and don't trust anybody online.
Then do you trust in an OS that requires anti-virus software to stay relatively safe? I assume you use Windows, do you?

I do use Windows, but I don't trust Windows to store my bitcoins!
1023  Other / Off-topic / Re: Dear FBI, CIA, NSA, and SEC authorities on bitcointalk.org... on: September 26, 2012, 03:36:03 PM
In the unlikely event that an employee of one of these agencies decided it was time to stop lurking, register, and post in this thread, they wouldn't be able to until after they got out of the newbie area.

If you are really serious, you'll want to move this thread to the newbie forum.

don't trust online wallet services

even to Mtgox?

I only store bitcoins offline. I send money to MtGox or other exchanges in small amounts, and only for the length of time it takes to make a transaction and get my money out again.

You may choose to trust an online wallet service if you feel they are trustworthy. I will not trust ANY online wallet until bitcoins can be stored safely even when a hacker has complete access to them. For instance, if bitcoins could be marked as savings in the protocol and become non-transferable for a period of time selected by their owner.
1025  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Trust No One on: August 24, 2012, 04:27:06 PM
Sound like wise words there dude, tinfoil-hat level paranoia is a term i like lol.... yes I agree - the current state of bitcoin, and hell the human race in relation to bitcoin as well - both require such a level of paranoia at the moment, hopefully this will change in time.

It just makes me sad to see how many people trust some website with all their bitcoins. Even if a website is trustworthy, we have seen plenty of them get hacked.

Security is the number-one concern of the dev team, so I am confident that someday people will be able to keep them on their PC safely, but there is still a lot of work to be done before we get there.

In the meantime, be paranoid.
1026  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: In support of genjix on: August 03, 2012, 04:42:54 PM
Genjix has been around a long time, and his real identity and location are not exactly secret. I have never seen him be anything but nice and professional. I see every indication of trustworthiness, and I think people picking on him are hoping that he will reimburse them for their foolish losses (I never trust ANY website with more than a modicum of bitcoins at a time. Anyone who does so is being extremely foolish.)

A fool and his money are soon parted, and if you want to watch it happen, there is no better place than these forums. I tried to stem the bleeding somewhat by creating a "Trust no One" post (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=33835.0) and getting it stickied in the newbie section, but there still seems to be no shortage of suckers.
1027  Economy / Speculation / Re: Infographic: why the sky is the limit on bitcoin prices on: July 23, 2012, 04:29:59 PM
Where does this: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-18944097  21 Trillion fit in the infographic?

Good gravy!

His numbers are almost certainly high, but it does seem likely that a lot of offshore banking will eventually go to bitcoin once your average embezzler feels confident that bitcoins will be stable and secure enough to use.

I would imagine that estimates of offshore banking goes into estimates of the money supply, which I used to make my graph. Maybe under "savings accounts" . . .

Sorry, I can't let this thread pass without posting this very relevant infographic.

Here's why bitcoin price increases are just getting started:

1029  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: How CoinPal avoided PayPal fraud on: July 18, 2012, 07:19:02 PM
Not to use PayPal again Smiley  I had planned to accept credit card payments instead.  Over the last year, other ideas have consistently seemed more fruitful so I'm not pursuing credit cards anymore.

Any chance we can get you to share what you're up to lately? Bitcoin-related, I hope?
1030  Economy / Speculation / Re: Where else can the price go (in the long term) but up? on: July 18, 2012, 03:14:24 PM
Not only that he is ignoring relevant criticism of why the chart is deceptive to newcomers.

I think you are probably referring to the fact that the forex blob is transactional money rather than money-supply-style money. I didn't even include options and futures and other derivatives for just that reason. Still, the point is: LOTS of money may be trying to fit into a few itty bitty bitcoins. Make your own infographic if you want to represent that idea more accurately Smiley
1031  Economy / Speculation / Re: Where else can the price go (in the long term) but up? on: July 18, 2012, 03:05:28 PM

You're getting pretty close to spamming.

Relevant infographic is relevant!

There just happens to be a lot of different threads about this right now Smiley

1035  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is it possible to send BTC to an address that doesn't exist? on: July 17, 2012, 05:55:36 PM
There is actually one legitimate reason someone might want to send bitcoins to a fake address, thereby destroying them.

People working on alt-coins who want to make sure bitcoin prices rise as the alt-coin is adopted may choose to release some of their coins in exchange for bitcoin destruction.

I proposed this in The Second Bitcoin Whitepaper as a method of ensuring that alt-coin adoptions built on top of bitcoin don't completely leave bitcoin values in the dust (since bitcoins must have enough value to provide incentive to miners to keep the block chain secure).
1036  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin price will reach $25 by the end of the year on: July 17, 2012, 05:47:22 PM
Bitcoin will clear far more than $25, although whether it does so by the end of the year is anybody's guess.

Seriously, am I the only one willing to send a few emails to these companies to rouse their interest? What are internet forums for if not to organize harassment on people and companies?
1038  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Campaign to get a bitcoin "niche ETF" on: July 05, 2012, 04:47:49 PM
You "heard" a rumor? Or you attempted to "start" a rumor?  Wink

Definitely the latter!

Hey Anthony,

If a bitcoin ETF is NOT among those funds, please pass on our extreme interest in such an ETF to the appropriate people.

Thanks!

Hi, I’m not sure where you heard anything about a bitcoin ETF, but at the moment I can tell you we have nothing in our pipeline in that area.  Most ETFs have to invest the majority of their assets in actual securities – stocks or bonds – and may be able to gain exposure to currencies through different instruments.  Unless there are specific publicly traded companies that are involved in this space, I’m not sure if an ETF would even be possible to construct at the moment.  If you have any additional questions please let me know, thanks.
