341  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency - 0.8.8.6 on: May 13, 2015, 06:17:06 PM
I have several Chinese friends who are very interested in Bitcoin. None of them have heard of Monero. Any ideas about how we can better help?

I posted here as well:

你好

My Chinese is very poor so I am writing in English. I think privacy is very important and want to make it easier to learn about the advantages Monero has to offer.

I have two questions for the community:

1.  Which websites and Monero related services do you think are most important to be translated into Chinese?

These are my ideas for the top 3

https://getmonero.org/  (specifically the Monero missives so that the Chinese community is aware of recent development updates)
https://mymonero.com/#/
https://xmr.to/

2. Are there any volunteers that can help to translate and update the Chinese thread on a regular basis?  If there are no volunteers do you know of any services where we can pay to have content regularly translated and updated? How much would that cost?

Please read clearly before posting

Quote
A minimum mixin will be enforced

I read more carefully than you. You just copied a portion of the relevant quote to hide the full context of my comment.

"Monero has fixed it by banning 0 mixins. A minimum mixin will be enforced"

If you change "has" to "will" in the first part of the quote then I have no objection. I believe XMR will eventually fix this. It just has not happened yet.
345  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Boolberry Solves CryptoNote Flaws on: March 31, 2015, 08:00:25 AM
So Boolberry is the only cryptonote coin right now to have successfully 'fixed' the traceability issue of mixing=0 transactions?

Monero has fixed it by banning 0 mixins. A minimum mixin will be enforced

This is absolutely incorrect. Monero will likely fix this in the future but it has not happened yet.

For proof request a withdraw from Poloniex. They still use a mixin of 0 for every transaction.

My understanding is that part of the problem is some people mining to Poloniex directly thereby creating lots of small "dust" transactions that would be expensive to deal with with a mixin higher than 0.

Monero still allows a mixin of 0 which is a major problem ithat Boolberry has ALREADY addressed at the protocol level

Big volume for BBR today. I wonder how supernet will impact it. Besides xmr, bbr is the only cryptonote coin I follow.

wow some lucky person just bought 102,000 BBR for 8000 satoshi each on poloniex. Anyone know who?
348  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [BBR] Boolberry: Privacy and Security - Guaranteed[Bittrex/Poloniex]GPU Released on: March 19, 2015, 01:05:44 PM
boolbery good coin  it  bad cryptonote has not future from lack method of transfer for spending

exchange only make work for trade  no ability spend other place  without spending prospect cryptonote future not good

cryptoNote coin need things look like coinbase for make payments good if want adoption even small amount

Yes, we should approach the XMR.to team and ask them to make an similar automatic BBR>BTC gateway.

spendbbr.com is currently being developed. It will function similar to xmr.to with a few additional features.

Remember for guaranteed unlinkability, a minimim mixin must be used. Unlike other CryptoNote coins (mixin optional), BBR requires this:
http://www.slideshare.net/boolberry/boolberry-solves-cryptonoteflaws-37055246?next_slideshow=1

When SuperNET launches, more attention will come to BBR and other SuperNET coins. Hopefully more people will notice the CryptoNote innovations unique to BBR at that time.

We must build an economy around BBR and make it easy to spend anywhere BTC is accepted. www.spendbbr.com will be a good first start

Stay tuned:)

This is great news. xmr.to is a great service and something like that could really help Boolberry.

Personally, I would like to hear more about how Boolberry will be used within Supernet. Monero may have a larger community but Boolberry will grow when Supernet arrives if it brings attention to its unique Cryptonote features. With its tiny marketcap and fair (perhaps the fairest of all cryptonote coins) distribution schedule, the potential here is huge.

Only a small portion of Boolberry has been mined. Unlike Darknote and some other Cryptonote coins newcomers can benefit by joining now because of the very slow distribution curve
349  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [SDC] ShadowCash | Anonymous POS | Ring Signatures | Wow, Such Wallet ! on: March 12, 2015, 03:59:36 AM
Is the dev team working on the issue of SDC>Shadow>Shadow>SDC conversion time rules?

If someone converts SDC to Shadow, sends it to another Shadow address and that person converts it all back into SDC right away, the anonymous nature of Shadow>Shadow wont matter much. Anyone can see on the blockchain that one SDC address was debited by a certain amount and shortly thereafter another SDC address receives an almost identical SDC amount (after the Shadow was converted back into SDC) and thereby "link" the transactions with basic logic. Yes this would not be proof of the transaction because they are not directly connected on the blockchain, but common sense links them quite easily.

One possible fix could be to set minimum (and perhaps random) time limits before a Shadow transaction can be sent after a SDC>Shadow conversion and between the time a Shadow transaction is received before it can be converted back into SDC

Can the dev team comment on this? It seems like an easy way to improve practical anonymity on the network

firewall problem?

I was able to sync about a month ago. I tried again today (0.8.8.6) but cant seem to connect to any peers. I am getting messages such as:
( snip )

2015-Mar-10 07:20:19.571665 [P2P7]STARTED PEERLIST IDLE HANDSHAKE
2015-Mar-10 07:20:19.571665 [P2P7]FINISHED PEERLIST IDLE HANDSHAKE

I don't think I made any changes since last month (when everything worked). Any advice is appreciated!

To the best of my knowledge my firewall settings are the same as they were 37 days ago when I last synced

Does print_cn show anything?

it appears to show an empty list:

2015-Mar-10 08:16:20.122773 Connections:
Remote Host              Peer id             Recv/Sent (inactive, sec) State                    Livetime(seconds)

are you on windows or linux? if windows, its more likely that something may have changed since you last synced (antivirus update, some type of update, etc).

regardless of platform, I'd suggest reinstall. Just save your old files. You can even run simplewallet from your old folder after you install daemon to new folder.

I reinstalled but am still not able to sync:

initializing p2p server.....
libunbound error: cant bind socket: permission denied for 0.0.0.0

is what I am seeing when I first start the daemon... after it starts I am still getting the same errors as above

I am on Windows. I am not really worried because I have the seed in cold storage.... but I install the daemon to a new folder and the same thing happens.  I cant seem to find any firewall settings that are causing the errors.

Trace Mayer gave ShadowCash a shoutout in a recent video (18:40 mark): http://youtu.be/50_NfitNTkI?t=18m40s

I think this is really good.  Trace is a really cool guy and into privacy and anonymity. He has the website howtovanish.com and runtogold.com. He was one of Bitcoin's earliest adopters and evangelists ever since bitcoin was 5 cents to 25 cents.  He has like a bazillion bitcoins probably.  Its really good early Bitcoiners are learning about Shadow.

well-spotted Pline!
@TraceMayer https://twitter.com/streamuse1/status/575078474823696385

SDC can really use the support of more people like this. Someone should put the link to our website in his YouTube video and ask him if he (or someone he knows) would be willing to review the code and discuss SDC in greater detail. His audience is perfect for SDC

Don't say that! Keep things quiet in order to give people more time to buy cheap SDC before the code review comes out
We've had enough time to buy cheap SDC

I think Cryptsy is causing some problems and scaring investors away.  I had some friends I told about ShadowCash, then later they said they checked it out on Cryptsy and volume was nothing and the wallet was in maintenance so they didn't buy.  They thought the coin was broken or something.  I had to tell them no no Cryptsy just sucks, go to Bittrex instead.

It sucks pretty bad, the wallet on Cryptsy has been in maintenance at least since January 1st, and it was broken for a week or two before that also.  It only worked for a brief moment for like 1 day.  I e-mailed them a bunch of times, and contacted them in the chat and they just ignored me.  I told them if it is a sync issue to go to the console and do the "rewindchain 249000" trick.  I also asked them to just de-list the coin if they can't fix it, because they are giving Shadow a bad name.  But I just get ignored.  Maybe a dev could have better luck contacting them.

Who is reviewing the code and who will announce the results? Can you link any sources ?  1 year from now what do you guys see 1 SDC being worth??

Isidor Zeuner is reviewing the code.  I guess he is a German cryptographer and active member of the Bitcoin developer mailing list.  You can read some of his stuff here: https://www.mail-archive.com/bitcoin-development@lists.sourceforge.net/

I think the results will be posted on shadowtalk.org  Some more info here: http://shadowtalk.org/topic/321/shadowcash-whitepaper-review-and-code-audit

One year from now I wouldn't be surprised to see the price over 100K satoshis.  It seems the market cap is really tiny right now, and this coin is way undervalued.  It is surprising that the devs have built so much for this project, yet not many people even know about Shadow.  If you look at a hyped coin like DRK, it has a market cap of like $9,000,000 right now.  Shadow only has a market cap of like $350,000.  I think Shadow is a much cooler project, and a much better anon coin than DRK. Shadow has way more going for it.  If we could just match the same marketcap as DRK right now, we could see a 25x increase in price of SDC, or a price of about 500K satoshis.  Its hard to say though, this market is very unpredictable, and often stupid.

Can Isidor Zeuner come on and verify that he will be doing a code review and that the donation address belongs to him?

I have not heard from him yet in this thread or Shadowtalk. Where is the proof the donations even went to him? Why has he been silent?
Hey,
I think we should be patient. Reviewinf the code isnt done in hours, more in days, days and more days.
It is something difficult. And writing the review would also take time.

From IRC:

26-01-2015 18:55   child_harold: hope u dont mind me asking if there's any news from Isidor re progress? thx

26-01-2015 18:58   Naphariel: huh
26-01-2015 19:01   TrollsRoyce: when did that start happening?
26-01-2015 19:01   child_harold: recently

26-01-2015 19:02   TrollsRoyce: he reponded with some questions regarding the wp i forwarded them over to tecnovert
26-01-2015 19:02   TrollsRoyce: yeah who runs that?
26-01-2015 19:02   child_harold: thats what i asked
26-01-2015 19:02   WRA|00Smurf: thats disconcerting
26-01-2015 19:02   child_harold: R U IN IRC NOW @ShadowCashInfo?
26-01-2015 19:03   child_harold: maybe DM him on twittr TrollsRoyce ?
26-01-2015 19:03   TrollsRoyce: hes working on it though harold, soon as we get something finalized from him i’ll send over anything of concern to sdcdev then make it public afterwards

What does this prove?

1. Coolstoryteller = Trollsroyce = the person who set up shadowtalk and has posted the donation address for the code review
2. We still have never met Technovert. For all we know that could be an alias for Rynomster.

Can we have one post from our reviewer stating:
1. the btc address is his and received the funds to support his review

Posting the results on shadowtalk proves nothing if they are posted by the usual characters. For all we know the donation funds are going to the dev team and the review will be done by the dev team and then posted as if they came from Isidor Zeuner

I believe in SDC and am not saying anything is wrong. I am just saying the review would be worth a lot more (and more btc could be raised for the reviewer) if there was any effort made to prove it was authentic and that the funds were received by the person hired to do the review

Someone just bought almost 20btc worth of SDC around 20,000 satoshi on Bittrex.

Are they just smart and buying more SDC due to its great tech or do they know something?

Any new updates from dev team?

Blockchain (faster sync)
All updated live and always current.

Are you sure this list (from OP) is always current?

I downloaded the 2.3 gb Windows blockchain from the link above and started out 125 days behind. I am now still 114 days behind seem to keep getting stuck.

No reason it should get stuck though. Do you have enough RAM to run a node?

4 GB is a bare minimum that might still work on Windows (might require tweaking virtual memory settings), but if it does it will be slow. 6 GB should work reasonably well.

I am using an old machine that I only use for crypto wallets/cold storage.  I have 6GB but based on my problems I am thinking about buying more
