1261  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: [POLL] Should Butterfly Labs (BFL) get a Scammer tag? on: May 03, 2013, 11:45:43 PM
I voted yes after receiving a refund of about 6BTC when I wrote them a mail asking back the 70BTC i paid back in September based on their lies at that time (I was stupid enough to provide a btc address in this mail).

So, I missed the opportunity to sell my 70BTC with good profit during the bubble and I dont have an order anymore. They refuse to reinstate the order now as well.

Soooo...let me get this straight...you paid BTC70 in September (valued at, what, $700-840 or so..assuming $10-12 a coin)...and you hate BFL because they didn't give you $17,000+ back during the bubble?

Are you retarded?

He already said he ordered from BFL. Tongue
1262  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BFL buyers - Damned if you do, Damned if you don't? on: May 03, 2013, 06:46:05 PM
Let us consider what might happen.

I invest 2499 dollars into BFL. The best investment i COULD put it in would promise me increases of 10% if i tie it down for at least 5 years (buying a windmill rig).

Lets say I buy it and it comes really late. Fuck, the hash rate in the network has gone to 320TH/s. my god, it sucks.

Now, lets say we take it that we have 40 million as a result of the quadrupling in hash rate. After twelve months, considering that per year, the investment looses 60% of its value in profitability...

That would be 11k dollars in the first year on this. That is a 400% ROI within twelve months. At todays price AFTER the crash.

So no one is damned. The only worst case scenario is BFL being bankrupt. Anything else, I want to answer with "Bitches, please, get back to the real world."

Some of the risks that you ignore with ASIC mining:

When you quote returns in dollars, you imply a stable BTC to USD exchange rate. That is masking one of the largest risk factors in mining BTC which would be a collapse in the exchange rate.

Also, people may not be using Bitcoin 1.0 at some point in the future but some alternate virtual currency (perhaps Bitcoin 2.0) that solved unforeseen issues that cropped up and rendered Bitcoin obsolete. This new currency may not be compatible with current ASICs.

Bitcoin mining is a zero sum game. A new competitor that enters the mining hardware market with a 5-10x improvement in price/performance would render existing ASIC hardware (which is really first generation stuff and can be improved upon) as obsolete as GPUs are now.

More entrants with first generation ASIC hardware flood the market and the Bitcoin network hashrate spikes even higher. This in combination with a short term exchange rate crash could render large rigs unprofitable for an extended period.

ASIC hardware could have a short operational lifetime due to hardware failures. A MTBF of 500 hours would crush everyone's anticipated returns.

If you bought a windmill rig, you could rely on long term contracts with your local utility. It is also a reasonable assumption that people will still be using electricity over the next 2 years. Windmills are designed and manufactured by firms with lots of experience and mature product lines (like GE), so we can rely on them to operate for extended periods of time. Thus buying a windmill rig is much less risky that mining Bitcoins, and it's return reflects this.
1263  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BFL buyers - Damned if you do, Damned if you don't? on: May 03, 2013, 05:50:25 PM
Avalon users (and other ASIC deployments)  have already captured the ASIC first mover advantage. The bitcoin network hash rate has already quadrupled from the pre-ASIC strength (~20TH to ~80TH). Further shipments of ASICs will increase the network hash rate, but they are unlikely to quadruple it over the course of a couple of months.

If you are already a miner then there are really only two scenarios to consider:
Scenario A: BFL can't deliver in bulk. Then they will not affect the hash rate which means you do not have to have more ASICs to keep earning returns. Therefore you do not need to order from BFL.
Scenario B: BFL can deliver in bulk. Then you can wait until they do and then order from them. They are able to keep up to marketplace demand. The lack of a "second move advantage" means you will not miss out on the "early hasher gets the easy difficulty" time period. You might miss out on 2 weeks of +25% returns as the hash rate goes from 80TH to 100TH.

So, no rush. No dams.

Yeah, you're a lawyer that uses "u" and "r" in the place of words and your grammar is atrocious.  Sure, we believe you... no really.

First time I have agreed with Inaba.
1265  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Butterfly Labs just sent me an update e-mail! on: May 03, 2013, 12:57:37 AM
But BFL themselves said that they are using the same single sc board for the 5, 25 and 50 models.

Where. Last i heard they have new board revisions coming in.

Those two statements are not mutually exclusive. They have new boards coming in, and still might use the same boards for all 3.

That's not what he said. He said they are using the same. That's a declarative statement. Mine was purposefully vague, as are the details.

The bolded statement is correct. I can produce a quote from Josh.
What BFL is *actually* doing is irrelevant and impossible to know until after they ship in bulk.
1266  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BFL Downgraded my shipping?! on: May 03, 2013, 12:40:38 AM
I must confess, as much as I disapprove of Josh and his attitude (though maybe my opinion is colored as a Batch 3 Avalon customer), on this particular thread on this particular page,  Josh comes across as a helpful caring representative of a company trying to assist a customer in a very reasonable and useful way.

Have to give credit where credit is due... Bravo!

Maybe his account got hacked?  Grin

Guys, I Specifically stated that i would like to keep the # of posts down to a minimum so that we can keep this thread Clean of trollbanter so we can actually get this issue resolved!
Inaba stepped in here to see wtf was going on with the downgraded shipping, And what does he read? "problem, problem, problem, IM A TROLL, IM TROLLING, FK BFL, ITS INABAS FAULT"

For fuck sakes you fucking trolls!, we are trying to get ISSUES resolved, If you are unaffected by this issue, then dont fucking post here!
I was please to see Inabas username at the head of a post, but when i noticed that All of his attention was fixated on the Trolls in this thread, I cant help but be flagrantly Pissed Off!

Really?
Clearly, this is not BFL's fault but instead it is the fault of people totally unrelated to BFL.
Also, you can't use the BFL forums or support infrastructure to resolve your issue because orange and the letter P.

The "Some text here" appears to be a javascript error on older browsers, I believe.

I have no idea where this ridiculous rumor about a broken wafer got started.  One of the trolls making stuff up again, I'd wager.

I think people got it from what you said in the shoutbox over at butterflylabs.com
Pitty: so that bfl picture of the big wafer - it went in the bin ?
Josh: Yeah, that one was mostly trashed.

Here is a thread about it on your forums:
https://forums.butterflylabs.com/pre-sales-questions/2219-ls-single-update-josh.html

But you are right about one thing, a troll made up some stuff.  Grin
1271  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: No FCC or UL label on BFL's Jalapeņo on: May 02, 2013, 01:32:58 AM
You guys do realize not everything that is FCC certified has a sticker on it stating so?? Look at your cell phone, where is the sticker? Look at a cordless phone, where is the sticker??? Computer motherboard? Video Card? Generally you'll hunt in the book and lo-and behold there is the FCC compliance statement. Just saying...

And as far as the UL label on the power-supply, unless BFL is making that (and it looks like a fairly standard switching power supply brick, probably for a laptop) that's the manufacturer of said product.

I checked my motherboard, a DVD drive, a video card from Nvidia, and a video card from AMD. They all had the FCC compliance logo on them.
I popped open an old phone, it had it on the inside of the case.

Woosh, there went their customers passwords.
I hope they salted their hashes.  Sad
I hope they hashed them. Sad
1273  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Butterfly Labs just sent me an update e-mail! on: May 01, 2013, 10:27:30 PM
This is fairly straightforward. They promised

but they are delivering

So they need permission to do the switch. If they actually deliver the hash power, I don't think anyone will care the form factor changed. Power consumption is disappointing, but at the current exchange rate and network hash power it is a non-issue. This is actually a sign from BFL that they are acting in a professional fashion to inform their user base.
1274  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Received BFL Jalapeņo Today! on: May 01, 2013, 09:42:18 PM
Garsh!  I wonder why we've been delayed?  It couldn't be because there was a problem, could there?  Garsh!

Yet another evasion. Josh never addresses how in November he claimed to have 3 working products sent for certification testing. Yet the Jalapeno as designed was untenable and could never have worked. The mini-rig was an absolute fantasy given its 7500W power profile. One Single barely limped into the dubious category of shipped without leaving BFL on April 1st. We now know BFL had serious problems with development (finally). If you had just admitted that you needed to do a complete redesign in October, I wouldn't be here typing this.

The level of stupidity displayed by Syke and the crew is absolutely astounding.  I mean, even a child can understand problem + delay = things not working.  Seriously, what mental breakdown is required for someone to be so oblivious as to not understand the basic fundamental principal of cause and effect?  I find it difficult to believe someone can be so incredibly stupid and still be able to use a computer.  So that leaves willful trolling... which pretty much explains Syke and the rest.

And that, folks, is why Syke, PuertoLibre, k9quaint, et al are complete wastes of humanity.  They are the ones that wreck this forum for everyone else and prevent any sort of sane, rational, mature discourse.

Followed by his standard tactic of insulting those who dare to disagree or question him.
A reasonable explanation:  They sent in the QFN-packaged version before they knew of the heat issues faced, and did or did not get it certified.  Doesn't really matter, since they had to redesign the whole thing anyway.

The heat issues were so severe that I doubt they escaped notice under any circumstances. The product needs to be able to function for a reasonable period of time to test for RF leakage. It is not just an on/off sort of test. I would imagine if they actually got certification that it would have been paraded in front of the naysayers as proof that a product existed.

It is only because they had to redesign the whole thing that we are even talking about any of this. They were in a serious marketing war with Avalon and bASIC at the time and could not afford to show any weakness lest their investors start ask for refunds.
1275  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: No FCC or UL label on BFL's Jalapeņo on: May 01, 2013, 08:28:50 PM
It is definitely here to troll BFL, but BFL brought it upon itself.  Saying they would have the inspection done in November, and failing to do it, is amusing to me.  The FCC may or may not be amused, but they are good at giving fucks, and they are also good at ensuring compliance with the law.  Should be interesting to see how this plays out once they get wind of it.

Precisely. Nobody would have brought it up if BFL hadn't made statements about their progress with the process. Since we are going over BFLs statements about their progress, it is germane to the conversation.
1276  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BFL Wafer Broke? on: May 01, 2013, 08:25:31 PM
Take k9quaint and PL as prime examples.  Every post they make for the most part contains at least one lie or falsehood...

He has a point, since in many posts I am quoting an assertion made by Inaba that has turned out to be false.
1277  Other / Off-topic / Re: BUTTERFLY LABS OUT OF CHIPS??? BFL 5/1/2013 on: May 01, 2013, 06:44:42 PM
So after analysis of Josh's statements we have the following situtation:

The boards *might* be done.
There are no chips for the boards.
They *might* have chips by the end of the week, but no firm date for delivery.
They still need to get the firmware working, no time estimate for that either.
There *might* be electrical & physical issues with the new boards.
And of course, yet another "gonna ship next week." but only if everything goes perfectly in a project where almost nothing goes right.
1278  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Received BFL Jalapeņo Today! on: May 01, 2013, 06:30:14 PM
Let us examine just one "mistake" for the moment:
How can you explain their statement that all 3 devices were sent for FCC testing (according to Josh in Nov 2012) at the same time and should be certified in 2 weeks[?]
I'm trying to find the original for that, but Google isn't being my friend today.  Can you help?
And yeah, the whole "shipping before April" and bet thing was a clusterfuck.
When is the Jalapeno getting FCC approval?
Maybe two weeks? We are waiting for the test lab to issue the test report.
While the statement that he's waiting on test lab certification was weaselly enough to make some lawyers blush, it's not false.  In fact, it's still true.

Since the actual certification for a non-transmitting device should take only 2-3 days, one could charitably presume that he was hoping to get a device in for testing within a week or two or three, and that the timeframe wouldn't be far off.  If one were feeling charitable.  If it were actually in a lab, he wouldn't have needed the "maybe," which is a tip that he wasn't being entirely forthright at the time, and knew it, so I'll concede the point that they were being intentionally misleading.  But you could also infer that they thought they were close enough to having working devices that the statement wouldn't turn out to be false.

Still... blame it on malice, or unbridled/irrational optimism?  I've worked with a lot of project managers that wouldn't even admit to themselves when a deadline was slipping, and somehow managed to be shocked when all of the milestone delays turned into a missed shipping date.  It didn't make them bad people, just bad project managers.

That BFL has managed this project badly has been acknowledged by, I think, everyone involved in the discussion, even BFL.

A false statement that was Intentionally misleading regarding a material aspect of product development is the only thing I am trying to prove.

1279  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: No FCC or UL label on BFL's Jalapeņo on: May 01, 2013, 05:08:52 PM

With that said, I think this thread was more about catching BFL in a lie/broken promise.

Indeed.
