1541  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Marketplace (Altcoins) / Re: Vanilla Coin - logo on: July 09, 2015, 02:32:12 AM
I posted this in the main VanillaCoin thread, but I see you wished to keep comments here.

I really like the graphic but the font choice seems a little much. I think a simpler font wound go with the minimalistic concept a bit better.

For me, even though I know it is VanillaCoin, it is hard to read it clearly, especially the L's as they look like backward J's. My favorite of the bunch is the first logo on the black background, as it is simple in colors, but still offers a very professional and polished look. Could you try a few with a cleaner font scheme with the same graphic?

I should also add that my only affiliation with VanillaCoin is as a small miner, but I too like the coin and think it has a future. As such, I would be willing to contribute toward the bounty for a polished logo if one were to be setup.

Edit: The logo display order is different in this thread, so the one I liked was the 4th one in this post (black background).

1543  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Litecoin predictions. on: July 09, 2015, 02:01:03 AM
litecoin will be $40 soon, and trade volume will overtake bitcoin
we all mostly agree on that, but the question was more when. "soon" is too relative.
So if you or someone else could came up with more precise guesses it would be interesting.
(time span with reasons why please)

I wasn't around when litecoin originally went up to $40, but looking at the charts it looks as if its rise this time is a lot more gradual, which I think is good. If it spikes up too hard too soon, I think we already have a nice historical record of what will happen. However if it can rise just $1 or $2 a week with periodic pullbacks, I think it would be a lot easier for people to have confidence it in long term.

So my guess would be it will keep going up, but at a slower pace than before. A nice slow average of $1/week would be another 34 weeks for it to hit $40. I doubt if interest in LTC increases rapidly it would take that long, so a more aggressive prediction of $3 week will put us about 12 weeks out, or sometime in September. I think if it rises any faster it would be unsustainable long term and we could expect a big pullback at some point.
1544  Other / Off-topic / Re: What was BTC price? on: July 07, 2015, 04:56:39 PM
I heard about it when it was over $1,000 but soon after I seen the declining value and ignored it, figuring it was a flash it the pan and would eventually would fizzle out.

I had heard about it off and on since then, but a friend who is really into it convinced me to buy some litecoin a few weeks ago. I have already doubled my money and am thinking of cashing out my original investment.

I may exchange some for bitcoin, but for right now it looks like bitcoin is in a slump. Also, $260 seems a lot of risk for me for 1 bitcoin, I think it getting back to $1,000 in the near future is asking a lot. Then again I didn't think I would double my money in one month either, so who knows.
1545  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: 2015 The Year of The Litecoin on: July 07, 2015, 04:42:58 PM
I don't think Litecoin will go above $7. There are too many bag holders around when will cap its rise.
The maximum Litecoin will go is 0.03 btc based on my estimation.

Yeah, I don't know either, I am just holding for now. If it drops below $5 again I will probably sell as I would still be up 2x, which is good for me considering I have been in for less than a month. If it drops even more maybe I will buy in again down at $2-3.
1546  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: 2015 The Year of The Litecoin on: July 07, 2015, 02:04:52 PM
I have recently bought a small amount of litecoin and I am happy that it has increased to almost 2x what I paid for it. When that point comes, which may be as soon as tonight or tomorrow, I am debating between selling half to regain my original investment and keeping the other half as "free" coins, or just holding on to all of them for even greater returns.

This is the time to HODL!

Yes, I have thus far resisted the temptations to sell, although I am not sure how much longer I can hold out. Smiley

I may hold out to $7 and sell 1/3 my holdings and let the rest ride. Once I have made my initial investment back, I will have psychologically freed myself from the remaining litecoins and wouldn't be as concerned.

you could always try out a few diffrent numbers in the savings plan calculator. (SSS) - A Sane and Simple bitcoin (in this case litecoin) Savings plan https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=345065.0

1547  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: MicroGuy's Altcoin Pick of the Week (Inside Scoop) on: July 06, 2015, 11:07:57 PM
Microguy, do appreciate your research for viable coins to invest/trade in.

From my time investigating and trading in alt coins, here is some wisdom I can forward to your readers:

-- try to trade in alt coins that have had fair distribution, i.e. no or little premine/instamine. Dont get caught on the losing end of pump and dump. Research the coins mining origins, read the coins announcement page, ask questions.

-- choose coins that have relatively high volume, that are actively traded. This is easy to do: just sort the coinmarketcap page by 24hr volume column. This is a much more valid criteria than the market cap, if you are looking to actively trade.

-- look at a coin's price chart for 3 months, 6 months, 1 year... does the coin show consistent up and down movement, rallies that were profitable within a reasonable time frame?  If so, you can trade on that coins historical data, because history repeats itself.

-- once you find coins with the above criteria, invest in them, looking for historical buy-in lows and wait and be patient. Wait for the coin to rise and take moderate profit. Don't be greedy, be happy with 10%, 20%, 30%...anything more is just greedy gravy.

-- repeat the trading with same or different alt coins

-- never keep coins in a trading exchange, keep them safe in your coin wallet.

-- while holding your profits to reinvest, try to save back to something non volatile...fiat, or if very short term, use bitcoin.

-- most importantly, never invest anything more than play money. You cannot emotionally be attached to trading funds, if you hope to profit.

Hope this helps some alt coin traders.  Smiley

H.

This post is golden. Really well written, thanks.

Agreed, great tips! I actually printed it out. Smiley

1550  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: What is the best new altcoin in the last 3 month? on: July 06, 2015, 01:58:49 AM
Vanillacoin - VNL

-Can be compiled on any platform, including Windows, MacOS, Android, iOS, game consoles, etc.  No other cryptocurrency can do this.
-Full, staking mobile wallets with transferable wallet.dat
-Only other coin besides BTC to require only 1 confirmation on Poloniex.
-Unlike Bitcoin, Vanillacoin's global transaction pool is highly synchronized, which makes malicious block reorganizations nearly impossible.
-Active dev, most talented I've seen in the altcoin space.

I will also cast my vote for Vanillacoin. I have done some research and it is the one I am currently mining and investing in to start. It has also seen a recent uptick in price so I have actually been able to cash some out and convert into BTC to help offset some of my mining costs. I plan to keep about a 50/50 balance of what I mine and keep for now. I haven't had the coins long enough to check out the staking aspect yet, but looking forward to seeing that appear in my wallet one day.
1551  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Hey newbies and everyone, how much btc do you have? on: July 06, 2015, 01:27:02 AM
if you have above 10, better to not say it, because last time i did that, plenty of scammers newbie has sent me fishy link and every kind of things, trying to infect me or whatever....

pretty annoying...

Great advice!

So is it universally accepted that if you have BTC10 or greater you're a whale these days? It's good for all of us to have goals!

I am sure your response is being playful, but I would tend to agree that 10 BTC is not necessarily enough to be called a whale. With that said, how much does it take to be considered a whale? 100, 1000, 10,000?

Myself, I would consider those holding ~3,500 BTC or so to be a whale, as that is close to 1 mil USD at today's prices.

I have seen many wallets that you can use only if you put the usb to the pc, login and transfer.
I personally use coinbase. Good to start but not safe as others. Your bitcoins are hold by someone else.

I do not recommend coinbase at all. Best way is to use Trezor or Paper wallet.

Why do you not recommend coinbase?

Subscribed as well.

This sounds like a good way to learn about picking the alts to invest in. I am still overwhelmed by all the information to be found, it is very hard to sort through and learn. Thanks for offering this service!

Does anyone know if the Smelter by Smolen miner does donation mining to a different address at times? I ask as watching my pool hash rate it seems to drop down quite a bit at regular intervals before returning to normal. Say 5 minutes out of the hour. It could be random luck I guess, but was curious as I cannot find a lot of information about this miner.
WhirlpoolX version of Smelter does not split reward, pay 'donations' and so on. Nothing is hidden except source code, all hashrate from your GPU is yours. Old, now obsolete, Quark versions did pay to my address and it was clearly stated in the announcement. Anyway, it's a good idea to be paranoid with closed-source software, so don't store anything important (like wallets) on mining PC or at least run Smelter under separate, restricted user account.

BTW, my miner is as fast, it's based on sgminer and doesn't have any fee.
Glad to hear it! One of reasons to release free version was to be sure that I've got all possible speed from conventional, non-bitsliced, way of mining Smiley

Another smelter question... Is there a way to set a backup pool? I see the pool I was using went down for a bit and I came back to find the miner was idling.
Not in the released version. The code is "almost ready", but I had to put this project on hold, sorry Sad

Thanks for clearing up those questions Smolen!

Currently, I think R9 290 is ~475 MH/s.  What are people getting with smolen's miner?

Not sure on the GTX 750ti.  Anyone have one?

I just switched to smelter and I am getting around the same hash-rate (475 MH/s) with a 280x. I have 2 rigs with 2x R9280x in them and each is getting about 980 MH/s according to the miner. Pool is reporting anywhere from 800 MH to 1,200 MH each, depending on luck I suppose.

I don't know if it does, but the quark miner he released before that had that kind of fee in place.
Smolen please speak.

I didn't realize you made a whirlpoolx miner, where can we download it?

Yes, I would be interested in this too. The whirpoolx optimized sgminer linked in the OP currently only seems to get about 1/2 the speed of Smolen's miner, even if his does have a fee included.
