581  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: User "torbellino777" phishing bitcointalk users on: March 14, 2018, 09:22:19 PM
I wonder what these scammers intend to achieve by infiltrating these accounts. It's not like they expect the original owner to simply give up and stay quiet about it. Can they quickly sell the account? Yes but they don't have access to the staked coin address(es) of the account so selling is probably not a motive. Will they use the account to scam other people here? Maybe but then again the account's original owner will have reported the phishing incident. The account will then be tagged in record time, giving little time for scammers to use the accounts for nefarious purposes.

It's not like they can access wallets within these accounts so I'm curious about their motives. Any ideas? Just trying to understand the dynamics behind these account thefts.

I have an alt account here that was used to promote a product that I was launching that got hacked. The hacker never changed the password, but they did use the account to spam multiple boards with a trading bot platform with their referral link in it. That account was never part of any sig campaigns, nor is it ranked high, so I don't know what would have happened if it was higher ranked in a high-paying campaign, but all the hackers did with that account was to spam the boards. Of course I've changed the password to the account now, but I don't know how they accessed my account in the first place.
582  Other / Meta / Re: LoyceV's Merit data analysis on: March 14, 2018, 09:19:06 PM
Even if you post valuable content, which is a highly subjective matter, you don't rank up in the same time you would have in the past (even without spamming), because of this decline of available Merit/sMerit and therefore the increase in value.

I don't honestly think it will hold the people who are here for the right reasons back. Looking at LoyceV's first set of data https://pastebin.com/01evJ1jN posted 6th of March (41 days after Merit started) there were 397 accounts with 41 or more Merit. That's probably more than the number of genuine Bitcoin enthusiasts here. I want to keep an eye on that number to see how things progress.

Sorry for digressing, @LoyceV, but I wanted to address this comment. When the merit system was introduced, I should have been among the most worried users of the forums, as Hero members have the most merit to have to be awarded in order to rank up. I will say that I was actually excited, more than concerned, as this is now my moment to shine. Knowing that valuable posts would earn merit, rather than the shitposts that litter the forums, actually gets me excited as I know that once I rank up to Legendary, it will have been because of my valiant efforts to help contribute here.

My experience on the forum has been a roller coaster. I initially joined because of the faucet industry. I discovered this forum because of freebitco.in, and then I learned about other faucets. Then I learned about signature campaigns, and then I became genuinely interested in the utilitarian aspect of Bitcoin and cryptocurrency. I'm a huge enthusiast of crypto now, and am currently transitioning into working full time for crypto payments vs. fiat.

This forum turned me into a Bitcoin enthusiast, and I'm sure it has for others, too. I'm hoping that this merit system will shake out the ones that are here merely for making money and keep the ones who are actively yearning to learn more about crypto and its technology.

584  Economy / Games and rounds / Re: Joe's Signatureless Challenge: Win $25 ($10 for 2nd) + 8 Merits every week! on: March 14, 2018, 09:02:21 PM
This would be a great help for low ranked member and I would like to participate in this challenge but until i see nullius is listed in the participants i think i cant win this challenge, no doubt that this user is oustanding hard to beat. It is good if the winner every week will not be able to join in the following week challenge to give chance the other member to win and every winner will have a battle for the best poster with a huge rewards and i think that is very cool.

I will say that I was surprised at the level of quality of several of the participants in the first round of this challenge. I will say that a rule has already been established that disallows the same participant from winning two consecutive weeks in a row, but I may revisit this rule if the post quality continues to increase by participants other than @nullius.

Can I still join or too late for this week?

Too late for this current week, but you can submit an application and you will be processed for the next round. Just make sure that you don't have a paid signature concurrent with your application, or you will not be accepted.
585  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: Selling About 100k USD worth of Bitcoins Daily @ market rate - Singapore seller on: March 14, 2018, 07:32:05 AM
Once someone starts making stupid excuses after you decided to trade and when you mention an escrow things start going slowly and stupid excuses start coming out, I wouldn't recommend dealing with this user without an escrow.

Forum escrow List
Paxful Escrow
Localbitcoins Escrow
Bitify Escrow
I agree. In fact he said He tried to reach me but yet I have no private message. anyway, Im in no hurry I have been here for a couple of years, I can wait any time to start buying.

Im not doing it in hiding, I am only dealing here in the open with one of the trusted escrows from here.

RESPECT

Uh, I think he was talking about you. And when @bitcointradesg was talking about trying to reach you, I think he meant in this thread. He posted here 2 days after his last correspondence with you where he asked for more details about how you wanted to conduct the trade. You disappeared, not the potential seller. Again, that's very untrustworthy behavior, especially when he kept everything in the open like you insistently asked him to.

Very shady behavior.
586  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: User "torbellino777" phishing bitcointalk users on: March 14, 2018, 06:14:24 AM
I've said it in another thread, and I'll say it again here, make sure to report the profile:

You see the little button on the bottom right of the private message that says "Report to Admin"? Click on that to report it directly. Thanks for bringing this up; I'm sure a moderator will look into it. But for now, make sure to report him via the pm, as well.

I hope this user gets banned, but until then, I'm also hoping that a DT member can red tag the account.
587  Economy / Digital goods / Re: [WARNING] Avoid auto-buy links, especially by newbies, locked or self-moderated on: March 14, 2018, 06:09:31 AM
i never buy anything from newbie post.

This is generally the best practice that I would recommend to anyone and everyone on the forums.

I try not to purchase anything from Newbies, either, but there have been specialized cases that I have purchased products from them.

Because of their PM limit, as a newbie, I send them my email address so that I can conduct a conversation with them, and do my due diligence before committing to any kind of purchase. While I can comfortably say that the majority of Newbie-ranked sellers are here to simply pump a quick scam, there are a few legitimate sellers who are trying to build reputation the right way. Such as offering vouch products to build reputation.

Just be very weary when dealing with ANY Newbie seller on the forums.

I'm really glad that this post got stickied. Good job, EcuaMobi and forum fam.
588  Economy / Games and rounds / Re: Joe's Signatureless Challenge: Win $25 ($10 for 2nd) + 8 Merits every week! on: March 14, 2018, 05:53:50 AM
This is fine, but I'm also currently having trouble sending to Bravo Charlie addresses, as well. The wallet that I'm using for escrow only allows for Nested P2SH transactions. @Blue Tyrant, can I send your winnings to the legacy SW address you have in your signature, or can you provide me with another Legacy SW address to send your winnings to? I'll try and figure out the escrow situation in the future :X

Ah np, send the winnings to 3CDSWMJVWqwA14JjH4mjX93TJuvhQG4MZr (another nested P2SH address)

Great, thanks. Your winnings have been sent!

589  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Common Q&A about Bitcoin: Non-Technical Edition (Earn Merits) on: March 14, 2018, 05:37:59 AM

How do I cash out Bitcoin?

you can pay for coffee or dinner with bitcoin easily. more and more shops receive bitcoin .you can exchange USD EURO or other on bitcoin ATM machine . of course ,you can trade any currency in the cryptocurrency exchange.

This is a very simple answer, but it's very effective. I will add this to the top post, but anyone else can feel free to embellish on this answer, if they like.

Q: Who controls Bitcoin?

A: Bitcoin is controlled by a lot of people, like the people who hold bitcoins, the miners, the traders, and the developers. You and me could be a part of it. It is the bitcoin community as a whole that controls the value of Bitcoin. For example, the more people hold bitcoin and believe in the value of bitcoin, the price will go up, you can say that the holders controls the value of bitcoin. Also, if the miners stops mining the value of bitcoin will go down, then you can say that the miners control bitcoin as well. So it is not really a single party that controls bitcoin, it is the community, the whole bitcoin ecosystem controls bitcoin.

Q: How do I cash out Bitcoin?

There are a number of ways that you can cash out Bitcoin.

First, you can use exchange. For example, if you are using exchange like Coinbase, you can just transfer your bitcoin there, then sell it for cash. Of course you need a bank account for this.

There are also some bitcoin debit cards service available. Where you can just load the prepaid card with Bitcoin and then shop anywhere with that card. There are also some other payout service where you send them your bitcoin then they will send fiat to your bank account.

Of course you can also use bitcoin for shopping. There are a lot of stores/online stores accepting bitcoin. Even the korean restaurant near where I live accept bitcoin now. That is a way of cashing out bitcoin as well.

Great answers! I will use modified versions of this to update the Q&A.

Q: How do I cash out Bitcoin?

Option 1:
Step 1. Transfer your bitcoin to Bitcoin to Paypal exchanger like unichange or okchanger
Step 2. Convert your bitcoin to PayPal (your fiat) like PayPal(USD)
Step 3. Transfer your PayPal balance to MoneyGram
Step 4. Receive the cash (fiat) in your nearest MoeyGram

References:
https://www.okchanger.com/CRYPTOCURRENCIES-BTC-to-PAYPAL-USD
https://unichange.me/order/bitcoin_paypal_usd
http://ir.moneygram.com/releasedetail.cfm?releaseid=778502

I like that you took the time to reference and cite links here, but never NEVER NEVER recommend crypto-to-paypal exchanges to a bitcoin newbie. Or any digital payment processor, for that matter. That's where you find all the scammers, and someone that barely understands Bitcoin will surely get scammed when trying to convert to digital currency.

[snip]

Here is a question you can add: Do people only use bitcoin for illegal activities like buying stuff off the dark web or laundering money?

This is similar to the question I asked: "Don't people use Bitcoin for the black market or for illegal stuff?". You can feel free to embellish on the answer that was provided if you think you can provide an example or something.

Holy shit, I just had the biggest spit take ever. Made my day.
Thanks for the acceptance, me! Smiley

Yet another ChipMixer participant I can't wait to follow around the boards. We've got a rare breed in this campaign, and I keep saying it; this signature is like a badge of honor. DarkStar_, with decisions like this, it's definitely shaping up to be a hell of a club we got goin' on here.

Welcome to the last sig camp you'll ever join, @actmyname.
591  Economy / Games and rounds / Re: Joe's Signatureless Challenge: Win $25 ($10 for 2nd) + 8 Merits every week! on: March 14, 2018, 04:58:43 AM
I tried sending the $10 directly to Blue Tyrant's address, but for some reason my client doesn't like the bc1 addresses. Since I was unable to send the funds directly I have sent a little more than $20 to the escrow address for this challenge. That way Joe can dish out the funds for me, and next weeks sponsor money is already in the escrow address. I apologize for being about a day late here, but I've been very busy lately.

TXID : 6f3a8961aeb2a81e46f60325fccd1fbed130ca3a8464c1aef55fd38a697c2a55

Let me know if that's okay, Joe.

592  Economy / Games and rounds / Re: Joe's Signatureless Challenge: Win $25 ($10 for 2nd) + 8 Merits every week! on: March 14, 2018, 04:46:18 AM
Just to clarify does the round begin (aka the time for the posting to be counted) begin from that time or the applications?

The round begins on Sunday, but when I do my count at the end of the round, I tally up the posts from the participants' applications post. So even if they apply for the challenge after the round begins, all posts from the start of the round will count towards the current round.

Hi Joe, i just want to inform you that i would like to sponsor 5merits for the second round of this challenge. Just let me know the winner and which post should need to toss merit thanks.

Do you have a preference as to how you would like to split up the merits, and for which rankings? Please let me know, and I'll include you as a merit sponsor for Round 2! Thank you.

Can I sponsor a consolation prize of 2 Merit for the best Newbie or Jr. Member who doesn't get any other prize?
@BTCforJoe: isn't there anyone who qualifies for this?
Am I right that Sellingaccs would qualify for my consolation prize?

That is correct; merit away!

I'd like to rain some merit on the winners but I'm a bit confused - are there specific posts that I should merit? The application posts? Would like to make it clear that this is for the challenge.

I'm going to require that the winners of each round post their most meritorious post as a way to claim their winnings. Otherwise, you're free to view the participants' post history and award merit for whichever posts you feel are meritorious. Thanks for doing this!

I appreciate your initiative! Merited! Smiley

I would like to apply but I'm not interested in the cash prize.
Let me know if I can join and keep my current signature (advertises my service on this forum - unsuccessfully though ...  Roll Eyes ).

Yes, as it does not belong to a paid signature campaign. Thank you for the merit; it's much appreciated. What would you like to do with the cash reward if you place for this round? Keep it in escrow? Roll it over to the next round? Donate it to charity? Please let me know!

Hi Joe,
Two Merits for the 3rd place seems fair enough, and I'll provide it in the 2nd round if you don't mind.

I definitely do not mind Smiley

Thank you, Geraldo! I will update the sponsors and top post now!

Welcome to Round 2!

In total, we have 25 participants for this round, which means that there will be a CASH PRIZE for 3rd place, as well (sponsored by @bill gator)!

Good luck to all for Round 2!
594  Economy / Games and rounds / Re: Joe's Signatureless Challenge: Win $25 ($10 for 2nd) + 8 Merits every week! on: March 13, 2018, 01:00:44 AM
2 more hours to get your applications in for Round 2!

Round 2 is already underway and will go until Sunday evening. Remember, a minimum of 7 posts is required. No maximum. You can post anywhere you like, as long as it's an English-speaking board (posts in Local sections will not affect your overall score, as long as minimums in English-speaking boards are met). You can wear whatever signature you want, as long as it is not a paid campaign signature.

Good luck, all! Spreadsheet will be updated tonight, and I'll reply to all of your questions in a bit. I'll also update the top post with new regulations.
595  Economy / Games and rounds / Re: Joe's Signatureless Challenge: Win $25 ($10 for 2nd) + 8 Merits every week! on: March 12, 2018, 07:05:25 AM
N.b., Activity Period 1257 will begin Tuesday, 13 March 2018 at 19:40:00 UTC.  I expect to change rank soon after that; and others may, too.  Does it matter to the campaign if the provided information does not remain valid all week?

The round will be carried out at the current rank of which the user applied for that round. I can only see this becoming an issue for the third place prize if a user ranks up from Jr. Member mid-week.

    [snip]

New rule request:  The winner each week has to suggest his top post as a learning experience, (and maybe expound on it if there is interest)

Great suggestion! I was planning on posting my top picks for the participants, but I think it would be best for the winners to submit their favorite posts that they feel are the most meritorious. The merit sponsors can then merit those posts for their rewards. I'll make sure to edit that into the terms of this challenge!

Update: It's currently 1AM. I will add all of the applicants for Round 2 to the spreadsheet in the morning. Good night, all, and thanks for making this challenge so successful! Here's to hoping it stays alive for many weeks to come!

Sorry for the long delay, but given that this is my first week of processing applicants' posts, I wanted to take my time to ensure that all was fair.

I have applied the same criteria for all applicants, and if you view the spreadsheet, you will see notes about each of the participant's post history for Round 1. With that said,

The winners of Round 1 have been chosen!

    First Place:
    nullius

    $25USD
(0.002168BTC at the time of this post)
    (transaction 1; 2 [bonus])

    15 Merits
(sponsored by DarkStar_ [8 Merits], Geraldo [5 Merits]) and BossMacko [2 Merits])

    Second Place:
    Blue Tyrant

$10USD (0.001084BTC at the time of this post)

    10 Merits
(this round sponsored by DarkStar_ and BossMacko [2 Merits]); bill gator will sponsor future rounds)

    Third Place:
    Toughit

    3 Merits
    (sponsored by BossMacko)

Congratulations to the winners of Round 1! Terms and rewards for Round 2 have changed, so make sure to read the original post to review them.

Overall, I am impressed at the level of quality I have witnessed in the commencement round of this challenge; the participants have far surpassed my expectations. And as predicted, @nullius has swept this week's first place prize. However, the margin of the win was only separated by half a point!

I will message the sponsors who have committed to awarding these users to ensure that all prizes are distributed properly. At this moment, @nullius has been sent his payment reward, and this information will be added under the "Escrow" information in the top post.

Stay tuned, I will update the thread and return with some more feedback, but for now, please help me with congratulating the winners of Round 1!

@BTCforJoe, is my new signature campaign compatible with yours?  I think it is.  Payment for my campaign consists of a 2256% airdrop of pure privacy, plus pride in being cypherpunk chic.

If you will permit people to participate in both campaigns (as I already am), then I will add a plug to Joe’s Signatureless Challenge to my ANN thread’s OP.

Behold, the best spam campaign this forum has ever seen:
