Malevolent is right. Never go full fiat. That's been historically a losing strategy, and that's a matter of fact - unless you sold to buy back lower and you succeeded, obviously.
The dude made half a million bucks and got a house.  I would be happy....

When the start of the big red candle hit, I said to myself:

"Self, there are 3 possibilities here."

A. We would snap back hard and keep moving up, similar to how we did just a week prior.

B. We would have a correction that was more like a breather. We would go lower, consolidate for a few days or a week and then march our way back up, slowly building up steam, having a hard time between 900-1000 and then finally blow up past 1000 in a short while after and have another stratospheric rise before FINALLY correcting for a longer period of time.

C. We would reverse trend for a few months or more before going pre-bubble again.

After the first hard snapback I said to myself "self, it looks like it is going to be A or B. Wow. That's crazy."

Then 24 hours later, it looked like it was going to be option C.

But now, I think it is either option B or C. And unless we have some weakness in the next 48 hours, it's looking more and more like B is going to take this one.

I'm pretty excited either way. But, if B is confirmed and we start heading in a northernly direction, it is going to be one hell of a fireworks show this holiday season.  Because the next parabolic rise will be nothing short of spectacular.  And once we get past $1000, there really isn't resistance for miles.
Yah, I am thinking B.

Not to mention micro-transactions offered by bitcoin payment processors can and probably will shift the way that internet content is monetized.

A One World Currency with One World Central Bank would actually be infinitely cheaper and infinitely faster than Bitcoin Smiley

You still need trusted third party systems to verify transactions.
Only the central bank needs to verify it

And the central bank can be controlled by the people through 100% transparency
How much control do you have over the interest rate set by the FED or the ECB?  Or the money creation? They are being very transparent about it though.
1167  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: November 20, 2013, 08:22:49 PM
every damn time. what happened to good old "lurk moar"? here's your answer: the (highly secure) blockchain is most likely not the ideal medium for micro transfers, and probably not even for small-ish transactions like paying for your coffee. That doesn't mean Bitcoin will fail, it only means there will be ways to perform smaller transaction off the chain.

Such as in bitcoin specie.  Its ideal for the small off-block-chain point-of-sale no-delay small transaction and is also more anonymous than the cryptocurrency.

are you talking about stuff like Casascius coins?

They really ought to reopen their connection to MtGox, which has proven more reliable lately than Bitstamp. If you'll recall, they cut off MtGox after the April crash brought down their Gox connection for a day, thinking Bitstamp would be far more reliable. That's not the case any more. They should also add a connection to Btc-e so that even if two exchanges are down simultaneously, there'd still be one to provide liquidity. Of course, if all 3 went down at the same time, everyone is SOL.
Are MtGox's fiat transmitting problems over?  I moved my funds out of Gox because I didn't trust them anymore to be honest.  All sorts of inconsistent bullshit excuses for the wire delays.

Bitcoin needs saving now? And here I was thinking it was more popular than ever...

Something really needs to be done about this $50 swing in seconds when bitstamp is gone.  Bitstamp was back up and running all well.... with no warning bistamp is gone and price swings violently.

There should be AT LEAST a warning that funds are about to run out on bitstamp or that funds are about to be added on bitstamp... They should talk with bitstamp and get some kind of agreement of when the cash will be added on bitstamp.

with no warning, how can anyone trade?  plus i could totally see insider trading going on with the bitstamp people who are about to add money on bistamp and have a bitfinex account...

We should all have the EXACT same info.

exactly what I was saying... how can we trade in those conditions ? We can't, trade should be frozen as soon as bitstamp is out of the equation !
It's very easy to manipulate the market if you are an insider that know when stamp will be taken out and/or in...

I have funds on bitstamp and bitfinex.  Now you are telling me that if bitstamp is having issues, I should be cut off from the market completely?  Your proposal is much worse than a price swing.

I doubt the bitfinex people know exactly when the bitstamp people are going to credit their account.
A ticker for the amount of USD remaining in the bitstamp account would be nice feature though.

Dear Customers

as stated several times, our servers experience a growing traffic.
Several days ago we took the decision to migrate to a new network approach called clustering.
The whole setup took a while and during this time our traffic kept increasing exponentially.
Waiting for the market to stabilize before moving to the new system wouldn't make much sense as we don't know if the market will stabilize and when ( it might go like a yoyo for weeks ) and, as our traffic keeps increasing we need to take action.
Yesterday we had about 2 hours of maintenance during which we couldn't complete the migration.
Due to market instability we decided to resume trading, in order to avoid mayor losses.
Today we tried again and the downtime was longer, about 3 hours something if I'm correct (it seemed like a century to us ).
As the new system was experiencing some slowness, we decided to resume the old one and fine tune it a little more.
So here we are, tired and frustrated, but not tamed.
We now go to sleep (it's 1 a.m. EU time) and we will resume operations tomorrow.
Tomorrow we will probably experience some down time again (it is not certain but there is a possibility until the system has completely migrated).
My personal suggestion to all traders and to everyone that has a grain of salt in his head and is not completely blinded by greediness yet, is the following:

- As volatility is high and we might have some downtime do NOT take leveraged positions until the move has been completed.
The dangers in this moment outpace by far the rewards
Spend time with your family, go for a walk, do some sport or become an expert in long distance pumpkin seed spitting.

Not necessarily in this order.

We will probably have some downtime.
We will probably have some downtime.
We will probably have some downtime.

I hope this helps

We love you too, but sometimes you make it really hard
Wink

Have a good day
Giancarlo

Hey Raphy

The amount of traffic has been growing, so it's natural that the amount of feature requests and complaints is growing too.  That's only natural, but I understand that it can get tiresome/frustrating as well.

Nevertheless, I feel that I should point out that I get the feeling that you guys still underestimate the importance of communicating with the clients (something that seems to be common for every bitcoin exchange in existence).  Communication should happen through multiple channels (forum message, website message AND email) and sufficiently in advance (a week or so?), especially if the downtime is planned and not due to some DDOS.  People that have margin positions open don't just suddenly want to be cut off from the market, it puts their funds in a lot of risk.  You also can't expect every trader to check the forum every hour.  If sudden downtimes like this, without proper communication happen more in the future, I think a lot of your clients will conclude Bitfinex is unreliable and leave, and I don't want this, because I like Bitfinex.
Maybe the traffic growth forced you to move quickly, and I appreciate the communication here in the thread, but please in the future :
1) signal downtimes in advance
2) try to be as accurate as possible about the start and finish of the downtime.  (I realize its hard to predict the finish exactly, because complications can always occur, but "there are going to be some downtimes in the next few days" is really too vague for a trader to base his actions on)
3) Communicate the same message through multiple channels: forum, website & email.

PS: I appreciate the post explaining the Bitstamp issues.

Not being able to buy on bitstamp is going to cost me a fortune very soon !!
Dude, you are annoying.  They are trying to make this work as best as they can.  Stop waving your fist in anger whenever you believe you are entitled to all sorts of things.  If you don't like the service, go to another exchange.
1175  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: November 20, 2013, 03:26:19 PM
Exchanges are obsolete. They're just trading on inertia.
Care to explain?
1176  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: November 20, 2013, 01:44:10 PM
$900 to $400 is a bubble pop. Period. It's not a healthy correction. It's not a consolidation. It is exactly what I've been talking about. The WORST thing that can happen to Bitcoin. I posted on FB the other day "Bitcoin on the rise about to break $800" huge amount of comments all similar to "wow, awesome, congrats". Then the emails start pouring in. Questions, thoughts, what, how, where. Today I wake up to those same people saying "man I'm glad I sat that out, dude do you want to cut your wrists or what, glad I didn't throw any money in is lose half and still be losing"

The people on this forum are bitcoiners. The people in the real world are not. They don't give a shit about the technology, they don't believe bitcoins will replace their fiat currency, the only thing they see it as is something they can invest in and every time we start to see some solid new money come in everyone starts speculating and the whales start taking advantage. The only thing people currently see and are talking about "Bitcoin crashes yet again, and costs investors billions".

Wake up people. For people who are so smart, your pretty dumb to try and fool yourself and others that this is healthy and just a nice correction/consolidation.

As always, I greatly respect your opinion and determination.

My (slightly pessimistic bull) scenario is bottoming out at $350, then quadruple digits.  Entirely possible that we bottomed out already though.
My "trading play" money is mostly in BTC atm.

If this is a real crash, then I am just plain wrong  Smiley.
