So any conclusion on what this means (in terms of security, usability of bitcoin)?
my guess is a malicious, high-volume node must be causing this to every transaction that it can pass through it - whether this means tens or thousands per second I'm not sure. The issue seems to have no impact on bitcoin, since it can only repeat the transaction under a slightly different txid, it is not capable of modifying it (such as to change the recipient). I'd say that more than a double spends those are "mutated transaction". There's really no way for the malicious third party to steal any coins unless he social engineers the sender... In the case of Gox their shitty accounting helped. |

Today MtGox(Tibanne ltd.) announced industry beating security features meaning that MtGox is now the worlds most secure Bitcoin exchange. This means that while you can trade on the exchange itself, the newly employed unswerving model of trust means that Bitcoins are held in a secure depository alongside cash reserves so secure that no unauthorised persons may gain access.

MtGox is delighted to announce that all customers will now receive this feature free of charge. Sounds like someone nefarious is creating double spends of tons of transactions for nefarious purposes.
At worst he is spreading some FUD among novices, what is clear is that regular users using the reference implementation are not affected. Minor inconveniences, but their wallets are safe. On the contrary incompetent exchanges who base their accounting on transaction IDs and manage poorly their customer services might be affected. |

The last few weeks have made me feel as though bitcoin is a long, long, LONG way off from truly mass adoption. If I were a business, no way would I want to introduce this kind of volatility into it. As an individual, it hurts to see just how unstable bitcoin has been lately because one day I have x amount and by the next hour, I might have something worth only a fraction of that investment!
I'm still in, but I see a long road ahead.
You should stop thinking in fiat terms, then. Tell that to the super market cashier. Loving the irony, but its hard for me to follow c0dex's line of thinking. He should see bitcoin as a wild gamble, not as an investment. Up to dayte BTC has greatly rewarded those who just bought during the crashes and took some profits during the euphoria. Basic stuff. This is and has always been a crazy ride, a very pure form of mass psychology at work, you just do not think in your fiat shrinking or you will make mistakes. You just calmly play the game with money you can afford to lose, and the odds than in 12/24 months you will be very good. |

anybody else is unable to withdraw BTC from btc-e?
Working fine for me. Where have I hear this before? Small withdrawals working better than large ones? They had an unusual day. Perhaps their hot wallet is simply empty or something. Don't worry too much just yet. I don't think so. The withdraw is completed on btc-e but never appeared on the blockchain. the submission now over 4 hours ago. Other withdraws seem to work as it should. damn why always me. I hope this is not the beginning of Gox problems. isnt bitcoin on its way to get 100% illegal in russia anyway? and where is BTC-e from again? do the maths gents..  BTC-e is about to be GOXxxed.. Big time edit: although i know there're from bulgaria, still, most of their customers are russians... You are a retard. And you are probably a retard from the US, as in Europe even the retards know that Bulgaria is NOT Russia. As a side note, Bulgaria is in the EU - Russia is not. Please share your source about BTC - Es customers are Russian for the most part. |

Sturle: I wonder if you are paid to take Gox's side on EVERYTHING or if your shilling is just a twisted way to protect your business which I assume relies on Gox.
But the more I think about it the more the latter doesn't make any sense, as its pretty obvious that the only way to protect your business was to move out from Gox months ago.

Seriously Sturle, WTF?? Bitcoin-qt/bitcoind vulnerable to what??? To 0 confirmations transactions?? Then YES, all services using a bitcoin implementation, reference or custom, ARE VULNERABLE TO DOUBLE SPENDING IF THEY ACCEPT 0-CONFIRMATION TRANSACTIONS. Wasn't that clear? For God's sake, on QT it reads "unconfirmed" until you have 6 confirmations, please don't tell me you did think that was for no reason. About malleability: it's a known and documented issue, its been on the Wiki for months if not years. You are running a service based on bitcoind, so I WANT TO BELIEVE that you have read the Bitcoin wiki - it's not too long. If you did, you should know that transaction ID's CAN be changed by a malicious third party. The coins still go to the address they were supposed to, there's no way to "hack" bitcoin to steal those coins, but the transaction ID can be changed - and thus you do not base your automated processes on transaction IDs - full stop. The blockchain is the tool you use, and until a transaction is bruried on the friggin' blockchain you just consider it unconfirmed. As it has always be. |

There was not nearly enough bid depth to sustain those prices. Two exchanges (finex, BTC-E) got wiped out with a single order. Many trustworthy. Let´s say some sociopath basement guy with 300k+BTC can do this again a few more times, just for the lulz if he wants. Keep on hodling Hodlers Not in your wildest fantasy. There is exactly one person in that situation, he is not selling, and never has. weeeelll... apart from Satoshi I believe that MP is also in that 300k+ situation Not even close. Knightmb might have something close to that. |

You overstate your case, unless you wish to argue that Satoshi was not competent. In any case, the reissue fraud is more or less independent of mutation. The way you protect yourself against double payment when reissuing is that you must spend at least some of the same coins so that only one transaction or the other can get mined. If you do this, no amount of mutation will result in funds loss (though it might confuse people!), if you don't do this then you can still have payments doubled up even with no mutation at all. (E.g. first payment delay, second authored, second gets confirmed, first gets rebroadcast and makes it in too). with reissuing fraud possible because of the bitcoin protocol itself , there needs to be a software applied which guarentees that the same coins being tried to use no exchange uses this up to date....so BTC is UNSAFEDon't know if you are mentally challenged or just a FUD spreader. Read again: BTC is perfectly safe. Transaction malleability is a well documented issue and its nothing to be worried about unless you run a custom bitcoin impletation which is vulnerable to transaction malleability. The standard implentation is (Bitcoin-QT, bitcoind) is perfectly safe. |

Creo que nadie se opone a alternativas funcionales y seguras. Pero si a nxt por todo lo dicho antes, y seguro que si a Gavin le preguntan sobre las alternativas de Codigo cerrado no creo ni que las considere una alternativa aunque él es muy educado. Y eso incluye por ahora a Emunie que aunque no tiene tantos argumentos posibles en contra como nxt, sí que será muy negativo no liberar el código el día que se lance.  Código cerrado? No sigo mucho Next aunque compré unos pocos en su día, pero no iban a publicar el código en Enero? |
