1501  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The problem with Bitcoin is on: June 02, 2014, 07:12:55 AM
....Both of them had heard of BTC, but both said that they had heard that Bitcoin was shut down and out of business. I tried explaining that they were probably talking about Gox being shut down, but they were convinced that it was BTC itself that had been shut down.

There is just too much misinformation out there still.

Don't think I'll ever forget the day i was told by a smug few that, "Bitcoin in Japan has crashed!  It is no more. "

People believe what they want to believe.

From my perspective, the main challenges right now are that 1. exchanges keep getting hacked, and while the thefts make headlines, the paybacks--when they exist-- are rarely publicized.

2.  "(eg, way to bypass credit card and banks expensive and inefficient services, and bypass government taxes and protectionism)"  doesn't really make any difference to small buyers/everyday users when it costs so much extra to buy in at exchanges like localbtc and the large exchanges have their trains jacked so often.  Why would consumers want to support something like that?  It's not as though most blue collar workers can afford to lose much.

tldr; If btc was supposed to help the little guy out it is now failing b/c a lot of those little guys are greedy and self-centered, just like Mr. Big Bank and Uncle Sam.

Hate to sound like a downer, but that's what it looks like from this honeybee's POV.
Some months ago my brother said something about, that all the Bitcoin-Exchanges are getting shut down(besides MTGox, there were also some small ones, I have never heard about before they were shut down) and therefor it doesn't is safe.
Today he owns some Bitcoins.
1502  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Will Satoshi Nakamoto become the richest person on earth? on: June 02, 2014, 07:01:04 AM
...
2) He most likely has control over those coins still (he invented bitcoin with damn near perfect, do you really think he'd be so careless to lose his private keys?)
...
According to Gavin, Satoshi was pretty sloppy, when it came to programming. (I never looked into the code, but you would see that there).
So he is far from perfect.
I am saying this, with all respect to Satoshi, but he is just not that god-like person, a lot of people illustrates him
1503  Local / Deutsch (German) / Re: Erste Bar in Wien, die Bitcoins akzeptiert! on: June 01, 2014, 10:50:07 PM
klingt interessant

1505  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Will Bitcoin Really Save Money? on: May 29, 2014, 05:08:08 PM
I agree with the fact that Bitcoin is cheap to use today (because there are very few services on top of it), but as pointed out:

"...BTC never can go mainstream -- unless reliable (and regulated) third parties emerge. And such third parties can only operate at a cost, i.e. basically the same way the banks and credit card companies operate."

So what is still unclear to me, in the long run, how can bitcoin companies be profitable without adding direct or indirect costs to the system?

I still don't understand what costs you are talking about.
Sure, when a companie wants to sustain it has to make profits. That's one thing, but that hasn't really much do to with Bitcoins, because this profit is made by selling something for more money that it costs.
The costs we are talking about, is e.g. the fee Paypal takes. If you don't use PayPal than there is no fee(for example you meet and pay with cash).
What fees are there with Bitcoin? You have the transaction fee, which is pretty small. You might have a fee, when you exchange BTC for another currency, but this fee is not that big either. You might also want to use an escrow service, I don't know what that costs.
I think, when you add this fees up, it is still way less, than the Paypal fee.
1506  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Wordpress.com just deleted the Willy Report, evidence of Mt. Gox fraud on: May 29, 2014, 01:30:19 PM

1507  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Video explaining "Does Bitcoin have an intrinsic value?" [Bitcoin For Dummies] on: May 28, 2014, 10:56:50 PM
We're talking about finance not philosophy here

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intrinsic_value_(finance)

w rare metal money you have to think of the time when coins were minted w specie.  If the King mints a $100 gold coin using $50 (market price) of gold, the intrinsic value is $50 & the extrinsic value is $50
Oh, thank you. I somehow managed to don't find that myself on Wikipedia.
1508  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Video explaining "Does Bitcoin have an intrinsic value?" [Bitcoin For Dummies] on: May 28, 2014, 06:13:58 PM
So, I finally watched the video(youtube is blocked at work)
I still disagree with the use of the word "intrinsic value" and the video made that clear. If you don't see being a tool for trade as an intrinsic value, than you can not see crossing borders, can not be counterfeited, etc. as intrinsic values, since this things are just useful, when you use Bitcoins as a tool of trade.
1509  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How many BTC users are there around the world and how to increase their numbers? on: May 28, 2014, 12:49:01 PM
More importantly, what would it take to put BTC (or another digital currency) in the hands of hundreds of millions of people around the world to use daily?

For Bitcoin to reach the point where as much as 0.1 % of the world's population are using it, we'd need a reliable, user-friendly infrastructure. We'd need trustworthy exchanges and "Bitcoin banks".

All of this is clearly impossible without some type of regulations, since exchange owners and other BTC service providers currently have every incentive to steal from their customers, as proven by Bitcoin's history.
What do you mean by "Bitcoin Banks"? The whole idea of Bitcoins is, that you don't need a bank.
1510  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Willy Report...What do you guys make of it? on: May 28, 2014, 12:18:58 PM
I just wanted to let you know that i sold my good old friend Willy to Slovenia. They are having some problems configurating him correctly.
But i´m on my way to the airport right now, to help em get everything fixed. You will soon see a new ATH.

You can not be the right Mark Karpeles, since he would have written soon-ish. Wink
1511  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Definitive proof that Satoshi Nakamoto is James A. Donald. on: May 28, 2014, 12:15:26 PM
Sorry but I am not seeing proof - I am seeing two emails between two different people.

Can some one please explain like I am five?  Grin
The second E-Mail was written at 17:55:45, the third was written at 17:56:27.

Phinnaeus Gage claims that Satoshi can not have read the second E-Mail and answered it in 42 seconds. There for the third must have been prepared before the second was even send.

I say, the timestamps are just wrong.
1512  Local / Projektentwicklung / Re: Vorsicht vor www.blizzcoin.com on: May 28, 2014, 12:06:49 PM
1513  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Video explaining "Does Bitcoin have an intrinsic value?" [Bitcoin For Dummies] on: May 28, 2014, 11:03:31 AM
Quote
Intrinsic value is an ethical and philosophic property. It is the ethical or philosophic value that an object has "in itself" or "for its own sake", as an intrinsic property. An object with intrinsic value may be regarded as an end or (in Kantian terminology) end-in-itself.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intrinsic_value_(ethics)

If the value depends on the situation, it is not intrinsic.

Then in that case, give me an example of an intrinsic value with undisputed high value in every situation. The "value" of it must be equal in every situation.

If you go back to the example I gave you for silver, its intrinsic value is that it's a great semiconductor, and great for antiseptics. However, these properties will not be useful in every situation, but these properties are still inherent no matter the situation. These are still intrinsic value, but will vary depending on the situation.
I think, we are going in the wrong direction here.
Like I said before, I just know the term "intrinsic value" in a philosophical way. I never heard or read some using it in any other context. I am not a philosopher, I read some philosophical books and took some philosophical courses at university, but that is it. If you have ever heard of constructivism you might realise there is nothing undisputed in the philosophical world.
So, my question is, is there another use of this term in maybe the financial markets/economics?
1514  Local / Projektentwicklung / Re: Vorsicht vor www.blizzcoin.com on: May 28, 2014, 10:48:38 AM

1515  Local / Projektentwicklung / Re: Vorsicht vor www.blizzcoin.com on: May 28, 2014, 10:31:28 AM
Vorschlag:

+ erhalte deine Bitcoins in 5 Sekunden

1516  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Communist Conspiracy Against Bitcoin on: May 28, 2014, 10:23:41 AM
Do yourself a favor and read up on what communism means. Don't simply type garbage. Communism is neither a dangerous thing nor is it a threat to your "freedom". It's only problem is that true communism can never be achieved in real life. What all these so-called communist countries are following a system of centralization, which focuses power in the hands of a few. True communism has the State controlling the resources of a community, however in real life,no state can run without an head, which is the problem. As for communism screwing over Bitcoin, the truth couldn't be further away. As noted in the comment above, these countries can barely figure out the internet.

As I spent my first twenty-some years in a communist country, I do not agree. Don't pretense yourself with fairy tales like "true communism". There are no such thing. Apart from some dreamers nobody promised a "true communism". Even Marx, Engels and Lenin believed in a kind of "practical communism". ...and certainly there was a "real life communism", and that was a dangerous thing, represented by some dangerous people and it definitely took our freedom and wealth away. I know that from my very own first hand experience Smiley.
You didn't spend your "first twenty-some years in a communist country". You might have spend it in a country, that calls it self Communist.
There are also countries which call themselves Democratic, and have nothing to do with a democracy
1517  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Video explaining "Does Bitcoin have an intrinsic value?" [Bitcoin For Dummies] on: May 28, 2014, 10:01:05 AM
"Intrinsic value" is relative to the situation. If you're drowning in a lake, a bottle of water will have zero intrinsic value. If you're dying of thirst in a desert, that same bottle of water has a very high intrinsic value.
That is not how "intrinsic value" is used.

No? Then how is it used. The example I gave is a perfect example. If you want to relate it to the current topic, then silver can also be used as a currency, and at the same time it has other intrinsic value. A lot of it is used in electronics and photography. But if I did not manufacture any electronics, then it would be useless to me in that aspect, but nevertheless it still has the characteristics of a being a good electrical conductor. Likewise, if I wasn't in the medical field, then I wouldn't care for the antiseptic properties of silver. So even though silver has all these intrinsic values, it could still be worthless, depending on the situation.

Thanks turvarya. I'd edit that in a minute. any info when the exchange in EMpTyGox will resume?

segeln, you mean the title? and that it must say  "[28-05-2014]BitCoin now on coinwik.org "?
I hope you understood that I meant ^^
MtGox: http://mtgox.com

I don't think it will ever resume
1519  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Communist Conspiracy Against Bitcoin on: May 28, 2014, 09:30:21 AM

Following are the status of current communist nations about Bitcoin

1. China: Banned except from Hong Kong, the free trade zone
2. Russia, the ex-communist: Banned but running the arguably biggest exchange BTC-e

3. North Korea: Kim Jong Un is yet to figure out what is Bitcoin. He is more interested in nuclear weapons to jump on the US force deployed at Japan.
4. Cuba: The Castro brothers are yet to figure out the internet, let alone Bitcoin.

Where did u find communists are trying to centralize Bitcoin ?  Cheesy

Actually China and Russia are more hardcore capitalist then most of the western capitalist countries Smiley.

I don't think, most of the people here know what communism means. Must comments in this thread are just disturbing. Seems like US-Propaganda did a good job.
Snail2's comment sums that up pretty good.

Btw. I am not a communist. I like the principal concept, but I don't think it could work.

Something I thought odd when the article was published (and I am not saying that this is the reason), David Gilson (the author of the article) is quite a prolific blogger, you can find his blog here;-

http://davidgilson.co.uk/blog/

Yet if you do a search of his blog (http://davidgilson.co.uk/?s=willy) nothing.  I have been a bit ill of late or I would have done a bit further digging.

Neil
I guess, he published it on WordPress because he knew it would be taken down eventually and didn't want, that this influences his blog.
