762  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Address "IPs to Domains"? on: January 31, 2015, 02:51:10 PM
Originally Bitcoin was able to send to an IP instead of an address, but it was disabled (for security concerns, I guess)
How is that supposed to be possible?
The receiver address is part of the transaction. You can't just put IP-addresses there instead of BTC-addresses.

766  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How many of you still believe bitcoin will free you from paying tax one day? on: January 31, 2015, 10:05:06 AM
I never thought it would ever free me from taxes.

Only 3 things for sure in life; Birth, Death, and Taxes

Disagreed for me Grin Only two things for me and they are Birth and death like you said but without taxes .
Bitcoin will free me to pay taxes or any other Online payment method , in my country no one basically use Paypal etc ... and they don't really care so any kind of digital money you have is safe and they won't know about it at all . and Bitcoin is even better then Paypal so yeah ... BTC forever <3

~ Madness.

You have no income tax, sales tax, fuel tax, etc etc in your country?  I want to live there, just our of curiosity what country do you live in?

That would be Algeria mate (biggest country in africa situated on the North of Africa) .
Let's say you have a Paypal Account with 1m dollar , they won't know about it . since the banks their etc aren't accepted by paypal etc so I use other International companies to link my paypal to and algeria isn't involved
Not sure if you got what I'm trying to say Shocked but I guess yo did
~ Madness
So, you are talking about tax evasion, not about countries having no taxes?

769  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why are merchants not serious about the advantages of Bitcoin? on: January 30, 2015, 10:54:37 AM
Just ran across this article on how Overstock is not getting as much revenue as they expected with bitcoin:

http://www.coindesk.com/overstocks-2014-bitcoin-sales-miss-projections-3-million/

No one should be surprised. Merchants have been loudly announcing they accept bitcoin all year. And it makes sense for them to accept bitcoin. No chargebacks, forgeries, counterfeiting, no chasing after customers with collections agencies, etc., etc.

But they can't answer one stupid question: Why should I pay them with my bitcoin when I can pay them the same price with a credit card that gives me 2% (or 3% or 5% with my 2nd and 3rd cards right now in certain categories) cash back and allows me to defer payment ~45 days?

Merchants need to get serious if they expect to pick up actual revenue in bitcoin and gain a real advantage against the competition. Offer something like a 5% discount on BTC purchases, sharing the savings they enjoy using BTC. That would give people an actual incentive to accumulate and use BTC. Instead they are treating it like a short-sighted marketing gimmick.

I'm a merchant. It's been over a year since I started offering 15% off any order paid for with Bitcoin.

Not a single customer has paid with BTC - everyone just uses PayPal/Credit card. Several people have said they will check out BTC, but then they always pay using a traditional method. It's important to note however that my customer base is niche, middle aged and affuent.

But then I remember when McDonald's didn't take credit cards. I was a teenager I think before they started doing that, and they'd been in business since the 1950's.
What kind of business do you have?
If I would get 15% discount, I would definitly look into it, regardless of what it is.
770  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Apple Pay and BTC on: January 30, 2015, 09:55:55 AM
Correct me, if I am wrong, but is Apple Pay not just putting your credit card data on your iPhone.
Seriously, that is the innovation Apple does nowadays?
Apple Pay "potentially" be safer than normal credit cards, if someone gets your credit card, they can easily steal your funds in the card. With apple pay, they need to first authorise the payment with a fingerprint although it won't be alot more safer since the fingerprint sensors is pretty bad. Some sources cited that lower fees would be incurred if apple pay is used to purchase the product.
Why do people still believe a fingerprint is a good password? A thief might even be able to get a fingerprint from the iPhone itself.
That is no security at all.

772  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: New Scientist - How Bitcoin Works on: January 30, 2015, 07:42:19 AM
Not bad.
It forget the point about miners getting the transaction fees(which could lead to people asking why would miners keep mining, when the block reward goes down), but I guess you have to make compromisses, to be informativ, but not to complex.
773  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Winklevii will become one of great capitalist barons of this century! on: January 29, 2015, 09:08:05 PM
In case anyone missed the interview here it is in youtube format:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEIPzl4Bx5I

I couldnt watch it from the cnbc web por some reason.

What would be the price of 1 coin if Bitcoin reaches 1 trillion marketcap?
Is this realistic or the Winklevii are aiming too high?
You can calculate it yourself what happens when Bitcoin takes different market shares:

774  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How many of you still believe bitcoin will free you from paying tax one day? on: January 29, 2015, 06:48:39 PM
I am amazed about the people who believe in all that misinformation that was spread over the years.
No, bitcoin wasn't designed to destroy governments. SN never said anything about that.
775  Economy / Speculation / Re: Not another is Bitcoin dead question?? BUT... on: January 29, 2015, 04:41:08 PM
Buy and hodl if you don't know how to trade.
Never sell your coins with a loss.
it didn't work all time
some people bought bitcoin when it was at peak(around 1200$)
so the only option they had either sell at loss of hold for year with hope of price increasing
Or they could have just used money, they don't need short/medium term, like I did.
776  Economy / Speculation / Re: Not another is Bitcoin dead question?? BUT... on: January 29, 2015, 12:56:57 PM
Im following Bitcoin since about 2 years and also traded quiet succesfully with alt-coins last year.
I quit trading alt coins because in my eyes its too hard to make much money doing so anymore, plus 90% of them coins were a scam from the beginning on

But now if I compare Bitcoin with alt-coins, it obviously follows the same pattern as most alt coins had on exchanges

low buy in - hype than they dissapeared

is Bitcoin following the same pattern?? Will Bitcoin eventually rerise??

What would be an alternative to Bitcoin at this time??
Just look at the news about Bitcoin:
Overstock/Dell/Microsoft accepting Bitcoin
Winklevoss twins bringing Bitcoin to Wallstreet
Projects like Lighthouse

Just looking at the price is the stupiest thing you can do. It says nothing about, if Bitcoin will stay or die.
You see a lot of serious business working with Bitcoin, that is an indication, that Bitcoin will stay(and rise eventually)
777  Local / Off-Topic (Deutsch) / Re: DKB Antrag abgelehnt on: January 29, 2015, 12:40:47 PM
Ich hab einen Account bei Ebay angelegt. Bei Sigpate scheine ich aber als Österreich keinen Account anlegen zu können.
Sonst vllt. noch Ideen?
778  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: There really needs to be a MOVEMENT about recent Bitstamp hack! on: January 29, 2015, 10:56:40 AM
Yeah, as I said, it's your own fucking fault for not checking, it doesn't matter if you're going on holiday or not, what kind of dumbass leaves bots and transactions running like that assuming everything will be okay once an exchange has been hacked?

People, especially people who deal with a lot of money in Bitcoin and have experience in it, should know better.
I second that.
It is definitly not Bitstamp's fault.
779  Local / Trading und Spekulation / Re: Kraken Now Open for Germany on: January 29, 2015, 09:23:15 AM

780  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: How to pay taxes? on: January 29, 2015, 09:11:58 AM
Thank you that document is dated 2014, I will read it now, my next immediate question however is that I may or may not have purchased and sold large amounts of bitcoins in the 2011 - 2012 time frame and may or may not still have some of those bitcoins. Am I obligated to pay taxes on capital gains made two years ago even though this document from the IRS is dated 2014? Would that be considered late reporting technically if i did?

I don't think that you should report your earnings from 2011 - 2012. the law is not retroactive.

They didn't make new laws, they just describe how already existing laws apply to Bitcoin. It's the first sentence in the IRS-document.

Quote
This notice describes how existing general tax principles apply to transactions using
virtual currency.

So I'm assuming this means that I would be subject to these laws even before this notice was made public? Therefore in my hypothetical not necessarily real scenario in which I bought and sold large amounts of bitcoin in 2012 and never filed taxes reflecting my gains (yes gains! let's say I doubled my money and got out in this hypothetical scenario), that I would be currently in violation of tax laws and even if I were to pay the taxes on those gains now it would be subject to penalty because it is now late?

Say it aint so! I guess I would need to consult with a CB or CA or whatever I don't even know what that stands for… dang.
No idea about US-laws.
In Austria, when you didn't pay taxes you just press charges against yourself(not sure, if that is the right english term, it is not as bad as it sounds) and you have to pay the taxes you didn't pay before and don't even get a penality.
