OT question here.
i'm working on a project and asked myself how "friedcat" looks in chinese letters.
could anybody help?
I don't want to spam the chinese subforum.
烤猫
thanks, i'll return this favor when project is finished.

by the way after googling this i see a huge amount of pics for this little fella   Grin:

Google brings up loads of images of the same orange cartoon cat. Is this where FC got his name from?
i chime in, is this the original friedcat?
would be really helpful to know...

hey ANiceJewishBoy,

your number 1 on your list is the first thing where i see a massive problem.
facebook is a nice way for spreading info fast but it's also filled with not very tech-savvy people.
(personally i have no account there and i don't like sharing personal details with a profit-driven company, but that's another subject)

these unexperienced users are the perfect target group for scammers, so to prevent any burning you also need to explain how to secure your OS and wallet and to be aware of the sometimes wildwest-like atmosphere in this young economy. (prospect of wealth disturbs the vision for security)
you'll find some useful vids on documentary thread for this purpose (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=268955.0)

Spreading existence of bitcoin via social networks is easy, but at the same time educating society is what's really important.
otherwise your project will produce a lot of collateral damage with naive pseudo speculators having dollar signs in their eyes and getting destroyed during crashes over and over again.
423  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Time to Boycott all US Companies on: November 14, 2013, 03:11:51 AM
You're probably right.  So much fear and speculative hyperbole in these forums.

fear and speculative hyperbole were also often heard words when discussing the scale of web observation by US some years ago...
look how that turned out.
US authorities will try to get their hands to any early branch of this young economy if they can't get to technology's roots.
Bitcoin presents among other things a huge shift of wealth over time and therefore the existing financial structures will logically make attempts to preserve status quo within this new system.

I personally like to keep a roll of tinfoil at hand at this point and watch out for any signs of outgrowth during the regulation process.

The economy of the future is System D. Traditional businesses with their physical offices, corporate charters, bank accounts and licenses are holdovers of a dying paradigm. We should focus instead on creating tools to empower individuals to create censorship-resistant business models.

We will not build a bridge to the future by conforming to the past. While it's unfortunate that traditional Bitcoin businesses are trapped in a position where they must cripple the features of the currency in order to be allowed to operate, we as a community must continue to move forward even if it means leaving them behind.

ForeignPolicy.com is blocked as long as don't i don't sign up for an account.
here's a quick pdf capture of the linked article "The shadow superpower": http://document.li/2TrW

this is a serious issue. it was just a question of time until some people start getting on their knees for integration by trading honour and trust for individual wealth & power and start disrupting the technology.
i'm curious about future developments next year in that regard.

426  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Documentary on Bitcoin - Summary Thread (+ intellectual goodies) on: November 13, 2013, 08:47:17 PM
Once the money gets out from the hands of those 1% to the 99% the world will be a much much better place to live in. Right now, rich are getting richer and poor, poorer.

running into open doors here, the more even wealth distribution to the lower half of the pyramid the better,
but believe me the rich guys have a lot of dirty fiat and filthy propaganda channels in their hands to corrupt this progress and throw stones in its way. (they're well practiced at doing this for centuries)
It's like the rise of internet again, a lot of people got rich, stepped up in the pyramid and sold their principles during this process
while a small group of honourable people weren't blinded by wealth and continued fighting for the great idea behind it and spreading the word.
Now look at the high level of virtual observation and suppression we're facing today, feels like Middle Ages to me in some countries.
let's see how this story turns out.
interesting times we live in....
427  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Partnership between Facebook and police could make planning protests impossible on: November 13, 2013, 07:44:27 PM
funnily there was a facebook thread on OT board some days ago.
i don't like quoting myself, but this time it's fitting and i don't have to rewrite my post (sorry for my narcissim)

never been on facebook and never will be.

i don't get it how people voluntarily share their personal info/habits with a private company solely concentrated on profit maximization while ranting on observation policies by authorities.
facebook is the perfect way to centralise a big chunk of web's userbase and hand it to the highest bidder on a silver platter (no matter if its marketing analysts or authorities)

i see bigger social networks as an attempt to disrupt free speech in the web and squeeze users into a small, well-observed and analyzed drawer system.
What was one big purpose of religion again....control of the masses....this is the same thing in action in the virtual world.

next step would be control of the information channels flowing into that network.

exaggerating here but how would it feel sharing the affection of cancer in such a network to your loved ones and suddenly getting advertising for expensive treatments and funeral services.

There's no sense in providing big companies with useful marketing data free of charge.
instead facebook should pay users for registration.
don't get me wrong, facebook probably helped a lot during the arab spring to connect and rally the masses, but in the future western authorities know exactly where to put the thumbscrews when facing uprisings by society.
The ongoing observation of these networks makes it very easy to see early disruptive developments and take measures against escalation.

Like every technological development, there's always two sides.

429  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Documentary on Bitcoin - Summary Thread (+ intellectual goodies) on: November 13, 2013, 07:27:48 PM
For now, atleast drugs suppliers, arms and ammunitions suppliers are making full fledged use of it. It is yet to reach 3rd world countries.

It can unite people throughout nations without any interruption of capitalist companies in between if it blows up. ONE PLANET ONE NATION as they say.

well bitcoin is a tool and humankind will play around and figure out several ways for integration.
locigally it docked on black markets in the beginning because of its level of anonymity and easy transferability.
i wouldn't underestimate the tools of governments and its authorities though.
we are facing a change on the global web where countries can and will at some point start reestablishing virtual borders in the name of "protection" against attacks from the outside.
The benefits for microtransactions could play a big role for adaption in the 3rd world, but there's a long way to go.

The established financial structures will put a lot of effort in controlling a part of the bitcoin network to sustain its power when they realize its disruptive effect.
"one planet one nation" is a nice thought, but imo it's an utopia that will never exist in a perfect form and humanity is still some centuries away from even touching its surface.

This is more a shift of a huge amount of wealth towards a specific group of people which comes with a lot of power and responsibility.
If this will be used to change the world for the better depends on how big individuals in this group are disrupted by the existing system...
I'm optimistic by nature so i know it will turn out good over time, but it will take a long and winding road to get there. (as always during human history)
430  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Documentary on Bitcoin - Summary Thread (+ intellectual goodies) on: November 13, 2013, 05:21:28 PM
Good job there OP ! Bitcoin could be the seed for next big revolution, artists are definitely need to share their role in this.
It's possible release of these documentaries might drive the price of Bitcoin in January.
thanks, hard to keep up to date whith so much happening in this fast-changing economy.
Btc world still feels like a parallel universe to me when looking at everyday life and realizing all the potential market niches.
Because btc is not like any high-tech company's product its "advertising channels" are small and rely on an active "movement" of creative people spreading the word via online media channels and superior apps in the future.
As soon as big players see the growing consuming power & possible profits we will reach the next stage accompanied by huge mass media coverage.
(though i have the theory companies will rather launch their own currencies in exchange for bitcoin instead of integrating it directly)
431  Economy / Speculation / Re: Gold collapsing. Bitcoin UP. on: November 13, 2013, 03:48:25 PM
this is OT, but this vid was mentioned here some time ago,
i put it on documentary thread (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=268955.msg3569469#msg3569469),
and a user asked for background info on James D'Angelo who's doing the 101 Blackboard series on world bitcoin network channel (http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgo7FCCPuylVk4luP3JAgVw/videos).
just doing some research here...
Has somebody any info on this guy's educational background?

James has found his groove.  he's clearly a smart guy.  he's doing a great job with the new blackboard format.

i'd bet he visits this thread regularly given the last gold comparison video he did.  he cited many of the principles i've expounded upon for years now in much the same way.

he's doing an excellent job.  anyone know his handle around here?
+1

the supreme quality of his content is out of question, one of the (if not the) best explanatory series i've seen so far that goes much more in depth than others.
he would really be an enrichment for bitcointalk community.
probably he's already registered? (please pm me if you read this, James  Wink)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHUPPYzzZrI
The name of this guy and his credentials?

thanks for the vid, i'll update the main list.
As mentioned in first post of this thread his name is James D'Angelo and he's one of the cofounders of world bitcoin network channel on youtube.
He is also a cofounder of bitcoin community in Boston, co-organizer of bitcoin meetups in cambridge and a member of positive money on meetup (http://www.meetup.com/members/78541892/)
credentials...well on google i found description "ex NASA engineer / professor" in cached description for the 101 Blackboard series, though no sign of that on youtube (must haven been changed).
I couldn't find any further info via linkedin or other platforms, not checked facebook though (don't have account there). (http://www.linkedin.com/pub/james-d-angelo/80/377/152), but only this local news article:
http://www.wickedlocal.com/brookline/news/x1803284725/Brookline-man-wants-to-turn-local-businesses-on-to-Bitcoin.

Would be nice to have some more info on educational background despite the informative content of his vids.
Perhaps somebody met him in person during a meetup and can help out here?
434  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: November 13, 2013, 02:35:00 AM
Sure, but still at some point it must become profitable for someone..  If btcchina was at $1m/bitcoin and Btc-e was at $100/bitcoin, someone wouldn't take advantage?

Cmon homeboy

But I don't understand why CHINESE people don't do this. You don't need an American partner or a trip to America to open a USD-denominated bank account.

Pretty much every Chinese Bitcoiner should be cashing in on their 50k right now...

i'm sure someone is taking advantage of it,
but it's still china, could become a lot of hassle if you don't have the right connections.

435  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: November 13, 2013, 02:15:58 AM
In the meanwhile..

Btcchina at almost $400, compared to Stamp at $365.  And still apparently no one has figured out the arbitrage.

you need a chinese bank account to withdraw your fiat, but you need to visit china to get a bank account

thats the problem  Grin

I'm not implying most people could do it.  But surely someone could do it, and would be doing it, you'd think.

lol

*checking chinese subforum*

"Looking for a Chinese partner to arbitrage with" (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=329534.0)
Remember how BTC-E has always had low prices? There's a reason for that: hard to get money in.

And you know how now BTCCHINA has really high prices? There's a reason for that, too: hard to get money out.

If it was easy to do, people would already be doing it and we wouldn't see as large a gap as we do. China is a Communist country, and they have a strong hold on their currency. Just doing some quick Googling, Chinese residents can only send $50,000 per year overseas.

So, let's say you put up $45,000 to buy 150 coins. Send them to China, sell for $340 each, split the $6,000 profit with your Chinese partner, and have them wire back $48,000 (while also possibly paying taxes and bank fees, etc).

Oh, and don't forget to add in your trip to China  Cheesy

So you might make $3,000 for the year. You could exceed the limit by having your Chinese contact's friends and relatives send you transfers in their names, but it seems like that would require even more trust.  And if the price of bitcoins goes way up and the price difference stays the same, you'll hit your limit earlier and make less profit.

It's a nice idea in theory, but I don't think it will pan out as well as it looks. Please let us know if you do try it, though!  Smiley

436  Economy / Securities / Re: ASICMINER: Entering the Future of ASIC Mining by Inventing It on: November 13, 2013, 01:49:16 AM
It does feel like investors are left out of the loop but tbh I appreciate it, AM's delivered since the IPO and most of its been on blind faith. Trust has been discussed a lot on this forum and it could even be a currency of its own one day but honour is hardly ever mentioned and its the foundations of trust. After seeing the financial report I'd guess it would take pages for FC to get us up to date on the full picture so maybe its better they break the mould and use the most despicable of words in the 21st century, trust us.

thanks for the very wise words there...
exactly this trust and friedcat's reputation made me invest in the first place and this situation hasn't changed for me.

I've seen a lot of stuff working in advertising sector and i know that a website doesn't even remotely present what's behind the shiny curtain.
still the difference how AM is spreading their products compared to its competitors is a miracle to me.
perhaps my perspective is disturbed by my western marketing approach and this is simply how things roll in asia.
(my thought process here is: more competition -> ramp up advertising via central and direct communication channels)

edit:
Your search results are probably skewed by prior search history; on a 'clean' browser I get the top about 25 results for AM, and most of the top 50. Also I've got adblocker, so no ads.

But in general I agree with you, FC needs to get at least a basic website up to face the market, and a newsfeed to shareholders - just posting more here would do, but these posts need to be advised ahead of time to avoid trading advantages by those lucky to be awake in the right timezone.
i just realized that after using my virgin IE. (what a shitty browser Smiley)
sorry for the mistake just wanted to make a point there.
437  Economy / Securities / Re: ASICMINER: Entering the Future of ASIC Mining by Inventing It on: November 13, 2013, 01:13:18 AM
One major retailer carrying these things would be a real leg up.

438  Economy / Securities / Re: ASICMINER: Entering the Future of ASIC Mining by Inventing It on: November 13, 2013, 01:02:38 AM
because i see AM cube selling/preordering already despite any announcement by friedcat so far,
i have to bring up this subject again:

What distracts me most as a shareholder is the lack of information channels.

i mean i get it that AM is just a manufacturer and the rest is mostly done via resellers.
But do i expect too much with a functioning decent website up to date with info on released products and links for the shops/auctions?
Why don't they roll out the full package to get a glance into every miner's eye? (slightly exagerrating here  Wink)
Show some pics, hell even make a rotating 3D model with some data.

I'm doing this as a job, i hereby even offer my service at this point for doing the shiny eyefuck renderings to get this going.

an example:
When i google "asicminer cube", the first site of results doesn't even give me a link to any official website.
instead i see the first 5 of 6 entries are named "ASICMiner Cube?")
and i notice preorder via wtcr (good) and hashfast advertising at the top (Tongue)
when i google "asicminer" again another hasfast advert,
then http://www.asicminer.co/ (which was last updated 4th May!!!)

I read some time ago that friedcat likes to keep a low profile and this was already discussed.
I totally understand having some amount of anonymity on the web,
but when i look at http://cointerra.com/;https://hashfast.com/;http://www.butterflylabs.com/
i see so much potential here...f**k, AM even has the "asicminer" in its company name.
that's like selling bread when your named baker™. You have to use that advantage.

this is not meant as a rant and sorry if i sound like a marketing-asshole here (comes with the job environment  Undecided)
fc will somehow sell these cubes but the overall process could be done in a much better way imo.
439  Economy / Securities / Re: ASICMINER: Entering the Future of ASIC Mining by Inventing It on: November 12, 2013, 11:46:55 PM
Cheesy haven't even noticed that.
let's hope it helps to get rid of those old chips faster.
why not add a caption ala "it's a miner for the whole family"  Smiley
