Only the old seed format will let you import non-seed-determined private keys to your wallet.
But this just in case I had downloaded Electrum some time ago, right? Because I downloaded it for the first time a week ago, so I created my wallet based on the last release.

Hi guys, I'd like to a have a clarification about Electrum: what do I exactly need to restore a wallet, besides the seed? Because some people say I only need the seed, other people say also a backup and the private key...  Huh

All you need is the seed but be careful as the format changed with Electrum 2.x

Don't scare him needlessly! There is nothing to be scared about. Electrum strives to maintain backward compatibility with all past seed formats so all he can simply backup the seed words and that is enough.

Not sure if this is correct thread for this question but here goes..
I'm trying to sweep private keys from a very old multi bit wallet into my just installed Electrum.
(I cant adjust fee in the old multi bit so coins are basically unsendable)
So i have dumped the keys from multibit.
I managed to get only one (out of about 20) to work. i swept it,broadcast, and funds showed up in electrum wallet.
All the rest of the keys i tried same process but gives me the message
"no inputs found, note inputs need to be confirmed".
one more thing... and the reason i'm doing this, i currently have a stuck transaction in my old multibit wallet that's unconfirmed
because of you guessed it...fee too low.
Im suspecting this maybe reason private keys wont sweep into Electrum? IDK as I'm not good at this technical stuff.
I never thought it would be so complicated . I just want to transfer coins from an old wallet to a new.
Any help would be appreciated. thanx and great wallet btw

To send money from one wallet to another you simply send to one of the receiving address of the target wallet. So go to the receive tab of your electrum wallet and grab the address it gives you there. Put that into multibit and send your bitcoins there. You don't have to muck about with private keys!

Ignore what these other guys are saying. They are just confusing you. Read this:

Either seed can be imported and work fine.

is confusing?

sorry but bringing in xpubs and stuff is confusing. also the guy you replied to had it wrong but you agreed with him. you can always restore a wallet with seed in electrum. the dev calls it the "electrum social contract"

So go to the receive tab of your electrum wallet and grab the address it gives you there. Put that into multibit and send your bitcoins there. You don't have to muck about with private keys!

The problem was my ancient multibit wallet has the fee set way too low and no way to adjust.
So any send transactions from that wallet would automatically get stuck and never confirm.
The Electrum sweep and broadcast method enabled me in effect to transfer coins and have the receiving
Electrum wallet pay the proper fee, rather than the sending wallet. Very useful for my predicament.
Its all done btw . Apart from a password glitch (thank you seed recovery!) this AM, I'm all good thanx.

No I didn't, I corrected him.

Electrum is a Bitcoin only wallet, you cannot store altcoins in it. There is a litecoin version, but that only supports litecoin... (I believe there were a few other altcoin versions, but they died through lack of interest)

It does not have built in ShapeShift support if that is what you're asking... no point... given you'd only be able to change from Bitcoin to Bitcoin Tongue

since the fees are low i decided to test out the replace fee option in the client.. just incase i want to buy something with bitcoin and need to use it, i figured id send some coins to see how things go.
so i sent out a tx to my paper wallet with a .0001 fee.. i then increased the fee to .0002 and it doesn't seem to be working..

the new tx with the higher fee is being rejected as a double spend.. the old tx with the lower fee is still showing as ok on the blockchain explorer.

i dunno if this is intended or not.. or whatever.. but the option does not seem to work..

the thing is tho, the details of the tx show the higher fee.. so in the end after x amount of time, will i get the .0001 fee back, or will the new tx sort of just show up?

anyways, i can see tho i cant use this option as it doesnt seem to be reliable..

also this isnt one of those my tx is taking too long posts.. i really dont care how long this one takes, as its going to a cold wallet..

EDIT

hmm it just confirmed.. and it seems to be the new fee.. so i guess it did work.

Your electrum wallet connects to a server, which is connected to a Bitcoin node. Some Bitcoin nodes don't accept RBF transactions and some do. Your electrum wallet might have initially been connected to a server that rejects RBF transactions, and later on connected to one that accepts them.

Try switching servers if you have the same problem again.

This thread discusses the problem.
