It would certainly reduce the population of the States, and much of the world, especially the northern hemisphere, because the winds from the hemispheres don't mix very much.

However, fire and steel and concrete doesn't explain the whole 9/11 collapse of the Twin Towers. There is no dome of water 3 miles away. Your horizon is 3 miles away and the ship doesn't immediately disappear at that point.
