Nxe4: 2 votes (Morecoin Freeman,Hueristic) Be7: 2 votes (galdur, boolberry) I see us coming out materially ahead with Nxe4 and only slowing progression with Be7 along that line. Am I wrong here? You guys want to make a argument to support Be7?

You guys want to make a argument to support Be7? Nxe4: 2 votes (Morecoin Freeman,Hueristic) Be7: 3 votes (galdur, boolberry, xmrpromotions) Hueristic, Nxe4 is an option here but does not (permanently) win a pawn. For example 6.d4 or 6.Re1 will quickly win back the pawn because of possible pins on the e file. We have several reasonable plans to choose from. My preference was listed in the post below: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1148538.msg12859893#msg12859893http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessopening?eco=C89Be7 is by far the most common move for black in this position which I have played (as both white and black) many times. http://www.chessgames.com/perl/explorer?node=34842&move=5.5&moves=e4.e5.Nf3.Nc6.Bb5.a6.Ba4.Nf6.O-OIf you want to see some game with Nxe4 look here: www.chessgames.com/perl/explorer?node=34843&move=6&moves=e4.e5.Nf3.Nc6.Bb5.a6.Ba4.Nf6.O-O.Nxe4

I see we are trying to avoid this. http://www.chessgames.com/perl/explorer?node=2042607&move=7.5&moves=e4.e5.Nf3.Nc6.Bb5.a6.Ba4.Nf6.O-O.Nxe4.d4.b5.d5&nodes=34844.34845.2042607Thx for the explanation. I can't think that many moves ahead. I thought we would be able to trap that bishop but it is a trap for us. I'm too far behind you guys to be useful. Gonna just watch from now on. Wish I could see this far ahead without using assistance. BTW, linking to this site the move makes it far easier for the layman to understand. Learning the lingo and visualizing it is not easily absorbed. Especially through reading. My reading comprehension skills have become practically non existent in the last decade.

If I understand well, we have basically the choice between: - playing with caution: Closed Defence (5...Be7)
- or being more agressive: Open Defence (5...Nxe4)
Apparently, the problem with the Open Defence is the Karpov's move, 9.Nbd2, which limits Black's options. http://www.chessgames.com/perl/explorer?node=37411&move=9.5&moves=e4.e5.Nf3.Nc6.Bb5.a6.Ba4.Nf6.O-O.Nxe4.d4.b5.Bb3.d5.dxe5.Be6.Nbd2&nodes=21720.21721.21722.21723.21724.21725.21726.34841.34842.34843.34844.34845.34846.34847.34848.34849.37411(Correct me if I'm wrong) Thus, I vote for 5...Be7. Be7: 3 votes (galdur, boolberry, hermesesus) Nxe4: 2 votes (Morecoin Freeman, Hueristic) I would tend to agree the that the open defense is more aggressive but there are many exceptions. There are some very boring and drawish lines within the open defense and aggressive possibilities in the closed. The line you mentioned is one possibility that could limit our options in that open variation. However white has the ability to limit our options after Be7 too. For example white could stop us from playing the Marshall attack with 8.a4: www.chessgames.com/perl/explorer?node=1832213&move=8.5&moves=e4.e5.Nf3.Nc6.Bb5.a6.Ba4.Nf6.O-O.Be7.Re1.b5.Bb3.O-O.a4This early in the game both sides have multiple plans to choose from with no clear consensus about which one is "best". Since we all have different preferences it is unlikely that everyone will agree on the best plan. As someone else pointed out there are actually other options besides Be7 and Nxe4.

Thanks for your explanations. There aren't "best" lines but as long as we stay in the "known theory", we can avoid mistakes.

Since you're interested in chess, you shouldn't exclude yourself (whatever your level). I'm a beginner and I'm not ashamed to participate Moreover, good players can explain and argue their choice and convince the others.
