I did not create this problem. It is from a famous game that occurred many years ago. Solve it and remember the pattern. White to move: Lasker vs Bauer Amsterdam, 1889

In most rook endings active defense is the best option. Black to move and draw: Caruana vs Anand London Chess Classic, 2015

Lasker vs Bauer Amsterdam, 1889
I have seen this game before. Good problem! In most rook endings active defense is the best option.
Based on your hint Ke6 seems likely to be the first move, but I am still trying to figure out the various possibilities to follow.

I did not create this problem. It is from a famous game that occurred many years ago. Solve it and remember the pattern. White to move: Lasker vs Bauer Amsterdam, 1889 It's funny how when someone poses a problem with "Black/White to play and win" and all sorts of sacrifices start flying in the head (those are the solutions 99% of the time). It just never happens for us mortals during regular games 1.Bxh7+ Kxh7 2.Qxh5+ Kg8 3.Bxg7! Kxg7 4.Qg4+ Kh7 5. Rf3 And Black loses queen in defense of the checkmate threat with Rh3

Kh8 Rf3 And Black loses queen in defense of the checkmate threat with Rh3 Unfortunately nobody tells us in regular games when we have a winning combination available:( You might want to slightly revise your answer above as Kh7 (not Kh8) is required to be able to sacrifice the queen on h6 (and stop checkmate) after Rf3 and e5. 1.Bxh7+ Kxh7 2.Qxh5+ Kg8 3.Bxg7! Kxg7 4.Qg4+ Kh8 5.Rf3 e5 6.Rh3+ Bh4 7.Rxh4+ Qh6 8.Rxh6++ 1.Bxh7+ Kxh7 2.Qxh5+ Kg8 3.Bxg7! Kxg7 4.Qg4+ Kh7 5.Rf3 e5 6.Rh3+ Qh6 7.Rxh6+ Kxh6 8.Qd7

27. Re5 will be too strong if we go with g4. White has the following potential attacks with move 27, all of them with strong follow ups. 27. g4 27. Re5 27. Bxf7 sacrifice

if:

There are several options, but White threatens to become active, I think we must act.

The problem is, if we go for the weak b2 square for example, then our Queen is not active. We need our Queen into the play. With our Queen active, the weak b2 square is still there. Then we have queenside an kingside attack possibilities.
If we play 26. ... - Bd4, white also has options. Bd4 doesn't go away. And for the f7 square, even not defending it can be an option, with Kh8.
So, either we act, or with for example Bg6, Rc/d8 or Bd4 we give white a chance to become active. I think all our options are still there after g4, but now we also have direct attack-option.

I forgot to write: the e4 square is important for white's defense; with g4 we can do something about that.

Not sure why 28 Ne4 is a good move? White will be up a Rook for a pawn and cancels any threat with 29. Nxe4 I'm sorry g4 is game over in 2-3 moves. @XMRPromotions, no move yet, still thinking how white will attack at the moment. 2 votes g4 (Rolf Uhlhorn, funnyman21) 2 votes Rd8 (XMRpromotions, galdur)
won't he push g4 and fork us? Agreed. I think we are better off retracting the queen or Bf as our next move while defending Bxf7+ possibility
