I think reaching the finals in the US open, push Medvedev to the 4th position already and should be switching places with Thiem, ranked 5th now.
@Royse777 - him winning Cincinnati open put his name in our radar. Also he won the Sophia Open early February this year so definitely he has the potential to be the next future number one here.
Yes I think they switch places and depending on how well Medvedev does in the tournaments coming up as we could see him finish in the top 3 at the end of the year. Medvedev is just under 2,000 points behind Federer so I'm not sure if he can achieve a top 3 finish but with the form he is in I wouldn't count him out on winning a few tournaments coming up. I think if Federer wins one of them or makes the final then he would shut Medvedev out of a top 3 finish. I think its going to be a great battle to see who finishes in the top 5 with Thiem holding it down right now but Zverev is closing in on him and lets not count out Tsitsipas who is just 1,100 points from the 5th ranking. It's possible that Medvedev can still land inside the top 3 at the end of the tournament depending on his performance in the next tournament and of course we will have to see how Federer will perform as well. His Cincinnati win lands him in the top 5, and then his runner-up in US Open push him in top 4. And there are still a lot of tennis tournaments in the this calendar year. Hope he remains healthy though, as this is one factor that can affect his performance and slow him down. Well if he is able to continue on with the form he is in then it is looking likely that he will end the year ranked in the top 3 thanks to the other members here posting how the points are score for winning and making finals in the up coming tournaments. It will be interesting to see if Federer will play in most of the remaining tournaments to try and keep his top 3 rank. I hope so, he really need to keep that form by entering lots of tournament prior to the end of the year. At least he can have so much experience and there's nothing to be ashamed if he ever does not land on the top 3. @Trofo, @TravelMug - Thank you for the explanation about the tennis point. I'm just wondering if Federer will take the rest of the season off and get ready for the start of the new season as I think it could be his last year next year. I think the big battle will be between Nadal and Djokovic for the number 1 ranking as Nadal is within striking distance. Nadal also has all the momentum right now so he could finish the year ranked number 1 once again. Nadal already talking about this he wants to end this season as Number 1 and he is chasing this as now we have some good Tennis in Asia and his target is arriving here and completing his target which is not difficult as we watch recently only Medevedev is only player who can challenge him others have not potential like this Djokovic is also not 100% so in my view he can achieve this easily.

Nadal can definitely end the season as number one and he deserves it, as he’s put in lots of hard work despite his injuries he’s continued playing and kept on winning. Djokovic is a strong contender to stop him from claiming the first spot, but due to his recent injuries he may not be able to play all the tournaments now. Is there any site accepting bets on who’ll finish first this year, as I’m thinking of placing a bet on Nadal to finish first.

Trofo is right.
Grand Slam winners = 2,000 points Runner-up = 1,000 points Semi finals = 720 points QF = 360 points
Masters 1000
Masters 1000 winners = 1,000 points Runner-up = 5,000 points Semi finals = 360 points QF = 180 points
Master 500, 250 same point system just cut it in half.
So Medvedev can still catch up Roger Federer at the end of the year if he landed at last into the semis, runner up or winner to gain more points, so a 1,000 point lead is not enough.
Owe you here and thanks to both of you. I was thinking about the huge gap between top two and third/fourth rank. But it seems like a good planning in a GS and executing it properly can rank up a player very quickly. It's much easier for a good player when their opponent (in the point table) eliminates early from a tournament. Like that happened with Novak Djokovic in the US Open.

Right, if any of the top 3 is eliminated early and didn't reach at least round of 16, there is a good chance that he can rank up pretty quick specially if Medvedev is going to win every tournament he enters. I think 10 points is automatic to gain once you enter tournaments though, but it doesn't make any sense. You really need to be consistent rearching finals/semis to be in the top 3. So it is still a wide and open reach and Medvedev can really enter and break the top 3 this year.

Well its going to be an interesting end to the tennis season this year as we got the top two fighting it for the number 1 rank and we could see Federer drop from number 3 to 4 if Medvedev is able to continue on with his top form and likely Federer won't play in as many tournaments as Medvedev. I do think Nadal will take the number 1 rank from Djokovic as he has injury concerns and his form has dropped off recently.

What is the remaining competition in the calendar year? I asked because maybe we can look at it today and see the possibly tournaments that Medvedev can enter and win so that he can at least topple Federer at the #3 spot?

But definitely there's a lot of room for him to play and be able to do catch up with Federer here.

Hope he continues and become one of the top contestant in Tennis ranking with Djokovic and Nadal (considering Federer will retire soon). Not really, I am following several young and promising players like Osaka, Ostapenko and Andrescu, then some local talents like Martic and Vekic. With women it is much more a case of the current form without clear favorite to win tournament. They don't have consistency or untouchables like on the men side since the best days of Serena.

Yep, on the women's side it's very unpredictable. Just look at Osaka this year, last year she was the talk of the town specially after winning the US Open. Pushing herself to the top. Now she is down number three already. 1 Ashleigh Barty 2 Karolina Pliskova 3 Elina Svitolina 4 Naomi Osaka 5 Bianca Andreescu 6 Simona Halep 7 Petra Kvitova 8 Kiki Bertens 9 Serena Williams 10 Belinda Bencic http://www.espn.com/sports/tennis/rankings/_/type/2

Martina Hingis spend 200++ weeks as number one women's player. You can add to this list, Kim Clijster, Lindsay Davenport. But now, it's totally different, we have like different winners every tournament. LOL. So it's really hard to bet on them and you could really lost along the way. . Another case is Stephens Sloane, 2017 US Open winner, peaked at number 3, unfortunately we haven't heard about her since then and she was out of the top 10 this year.

Women's tennis has been like this for years now which in my opinion is good to see a different range of players winning Grand Slams instead of the same players winning all the time like we see on the Men's side. I think the competition is a lot stronger in Women's tennis with a lot of young talent coming through and winning where as on the Men's side we see the potential the young talent have but can never win a Grand Slam title. I do see this changing in years to come once Federer and Nadal retire so we got a lot to look forward to in years to come in Men's tennis.

So true. I used to be a school kid at that time, 9th/10th grad if I am not wrong. Always he picture in the newspaper. They have great battles in the past and I think they really hate each other. Venus on the other hand was just like an average player but during her prime he won tournaments as well if I'm not mistaken. Right now the girls are very inconsistent, no one has dominated the field the why Martina Hingis does back in her days.

LOL, those where the golden years in the last 90's and early 2000's.. Martina Hingis spend 200++ weeks as number one women's player. You can add to this list, Kim Clijster, Lindsay Davenport. But now, it's totally different, we have like different winners every tournament. LOL.
So true. I used to be a school kid at that time, 9th/10th grad if I am not wrong. Always he picture in the newspaper. I learnt her name from seeing he consistence presence in newspaper and then I got interest in Tennis, I recognized her and what she has done for the women tennis. Same here mate, used to read about Martina and heard from my uncles talking about how great she was and eventually follow every news about here. The latest long hold success I think was Williams sisters? Serena if I am not wrong.
Correct, Serena is the more accomplished between the two. But when the Williams sisters burst into the tennis scene, both of them did play very good and it was exciting to see them play against each other.
I think St Petersburg Open has started, today so let's see who will win this year.

He will have some competition as Matteo Berrettini and Andrey Rublev are playing in this tournament. Both these two players are coming off good performances in the US Open so it will be interesting to see how they all go.

I was looking if Medvedev is going to enter this tournament so I guess we can say that he is chasing Federer before the end of the year.. Yeah, those 2 are going to be his challenger, or least has a change to win this year as they are really playing high level tennis as well. Most of the top seeds had a bye in the first round. So probably in the next days, we will see who will remain in the bracket and the potential clash of the top seeds.

I was looking if Medvedev is going to enter this tournament
Good to know. I see Tipsarevic (but he left the match so he is no longer) and Coric B is there. Medvedev should win this tournament. If I am not missing then he has the highest rank among all the participants.

If I am not missing then he has the highest rank among all the participants. We can say right now its very easy win for Medevedev as no one is good enough to give him tough time but tennis is now very unpredictable game and any player can upset on his day so lets see what happen in St Petersburg Open.
