Suppose I mine with my 5 year old laptop that has 4gb ram, Intel Core i5 and 500gb disk space.

Would it mine just as efficiently as a GPU and would i get the same number of coins mined?

Not even close.  Cpus have vastly different architecture than gpus or fpgas.

Usually, a memory hard algorithm is required to close this gap.  Look at Monero for example.

Thanks for the quick response.

This is very unfortunate for me as I was looking forward to mining Decred and increase the stash of airdrop coins i will get.

Maybe the devs might consider a memory hard algo when it is time to vote and 66% vote for CPU mining to be worth it.

PM me if you wish for me to advertise you

Memory hard algos make it more expensive to develop asics / employ on fpgas.  Look at scrypt for example.

Unfortunately, you can't have your cake and eat it too Sad

Wow this project has been evolving for a very long time, really exciting to see where it is at now compared to a few years ago.

One of the true long term altcoin development projects.

@MickGhee

I like your post.

I do think the dev team is thinking very long term with with Decred, which could have been why they went with blake-256 rather than trying to have an algo without a distinct advantage for gpu miners.

If this is a success, asics will be developed.

Blake-256 asics are CHEAP to develop/implement comparatively speaking.

Huge hashpower in the future will help solidify Decred's place in crypto history as well as providing a highly secure environment for future applications utilizing the Decred blockchain.

I definitely agree it looks like they planned this so that the gpu will remain dominate allowing for more users and less centralization.  and Blake asics would take time i think to develop but if there is profit to be had it will get done
everyone thought Scrypt Asics would be very hard and very exspensive and now u can get a GH for like ~2000 usd  and blake is much more easy to "port" (for lack of a better word) to asics

asic resistant algo, Neoscrypt. However no need to advise the devs, they way smarter us and know exactly what they are doing. Decred is in safe hands.

Neoscrypt is very memory intensive.  Coins that utilize algorithms like this actually encourage centralization because botnets usually dominate the mining scene.

GPU farms / FPGA farms are much harder to come by than CPU farms (botnets).

Blake-256 is VERY fast on the gpu, and most people (at least in this community) do have at least one gpu they can mine with.

Decred will not be dominated by botnets but by the people who wish to support the network.

Being "asic resistant" isn't a good thing.  It's actually quite the opposite.

Any coin that will reach the success levels of BTC at some point in the future (whether that be in a year or ten years) will have asics developed.

It is a necessary evil to provide the level of network security required for a huge market cap / real world uses.

Any algorithm is technically "asic resistant" when one considers the development/implementation costs of creating asic technology.

Asics for blake-256 will come if/when the ecosystem can ever support this level of expenditure, but when they do, they should be cheap and efficient.

if feathercoin got to 5 dollars a coin a neoscrypt asic would be on the market tomorrow

Nice to see the project is still alive and progressing well with the dev team. How are you getting funds for the coin? How many devs working on? I would like to do something for the coin. I'm very much interested after noticing the long standing development and involvement the coin has got.

ASIC promotes HEAVY centralization tho ... huge farms and so called cloud hashing  Roll Eyes

In my opinion mining should at ALL times be possible on (cpus, gpus, fpgas and asics).

How to achieve that?

Multi algo and THE WILL to adjust these algos as needed to preserve the corresponding hardware.

regarding botnets and cpu algo: limit it to mine for 24h only by asking a captcha
(or better yet ~20h to vary the time even more)

captcha isn't a long term solution to identifying humans and robots. http://singularityhub.com/2012/08/28/artificial-intelligence-will-defeat-captcha-how-will-we-prove-were-human-then/

Changing algos might work to reduce the likelihood of building ASICs but that's a human decision making process and subject to either bad decisions or pre-meditated decisions that offer massive payoffs to those that know it's coming.

ASICs are inevitable if a token is successful and valuable.
