Maybe because the potential for bitcoin payment is a big advantage for many users but one disadvantage is that the price of bitcoin is constantly fluctuating so people can treat it as a kind of stock to invest. not to trade

Do you think that sometime in the future, Bitcoin might overcome Paypal, as it scales in capacity and userbase over the years?

We already have the ability to create our own marketplace with OpenBazaar, that uses Bitcoin as its payment method, so it should be no surprise that the combination of these two may be a fierce competition for both eBay and Paypal.

Nevertheless, feel free to vote on the poll above and express your opinion about it, if desired.  Grin

Yes I think this is possible.
But for that to happen we have to get our sh** together!
Meaning that SegWit or some other proposal gets overwhelmingly accepted and finally realized to be able to push more transactions through the system and into the blocks.
Then we will able to overcome PayPal with it's actual $50 billion market cap easily imo.

I agree. Bitcoin has become really big, especially now in the last quarter of the year. However, I think before it can be possible for it to be similar to Paypal, it should first establish itself as a reliable medium of currency and means of payment. For now, although it's price is really picking up, many people still fear that it's volatile character would affect transactions negatively, which somehow makes people doubtful on totally embracing it.

Bitcoin have lots of potential to overcome Paypal in every way expect chargeback, we can expect it will happen when bitcoin developers solved block size problems so bitcoin is ready for more transaction and transaction fees might be reduced.
Also, 3rd party services such as BitPay and Coinbase allow merchants to accept bitcoin easily, don't have to worry about bitcoin volatile price and they can convert it to fiat if they wish Smiley

But, i doubt OpenBazaar will be success because it's not user-friendly in this time.

Good point. However, it makes me think that if Bitcoin would be viewed in the same light as paypal. Then things would not be the same as it is now. Bitcoin transactions are generally free, while Paypal, is not. So, if bitcoin would be used in the same way, then there would be an imposition of price to bitcoin transactions that would surely not sit well with some users knowing that it's one characteristic that many people like. Another thing that should improve is how people sees and accepts bitcoin, although it's on a rise, there are still negative ideas about it that kept the interest of many at bay.

It would be great to see bitcoin as an alternative to bitcoin but as many people still don't really use bitcoin it could be a while off from being used in this way also the volatility will have an impact on using bitcoin for daily transactions as week to week the price can change dramatically.

Sure, it will crossed Paypal as it's current valuation has crossed more than wealth of Warren Buffett and GDP of New Zealand. So, no doubt it will cross the Paypal very soon if same trend continue.

I voted yes, we all know that the transaction was declined by Paypal, everyone was unwilling to more complicated with a deposit through the bank and complete data verification accompanied by credit card.

I wish something would "overcome" PayPal. How they can get away with 6 month confirmation times, and call themselves "new Money" is beyond me.

To answer the OP - Will oranges replace sausages? They are totally different things, as are Bitcoin and PayPal.

Loved this..

You took my words man Smiley

Right now as published by The Street by Oct 16, 2017 - PayPal has had one of the hottest stocks in the entire tech sector in 2017. ... At a market cap of more than $82 billion, and by 2017 last quarter Bitcoin rise up like as skyrocket. Bitcoins currently have more than $182 billion, I thinks its quite much bigger than Paypal.

Even market of Bitcoin already reached to $300 billion. It clearly showing what the future will be. Even Paypal have filed a patent to accept bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Paypal also testing on blockchain technology, because they know that Bitcoin is far Big and what will be future of business, economics and finance.

I think it will overcome PayPal in fast transactions and of course the number of funds Bitcoin has more Dollar reserves than PayPal. But this is the only thing that bitcoin will be hard to overcome on PayPal, the security of every members from fraud. Unless you are using online wallets, in our country you can never use their service unless you'd undergo in their KYC verification. So you can open a dispute if the scammer is using the same online wallet.

Paypal still has its uses as a good platform for shopping online but they need to put bitcoin on paypal and allow deposits/withdraws then everyone is happy.

Bitcoin will overcome Paypal. PayPal exploded in popularity, which caused massive slowdowns on the network. Bitcoin is fulfilling PayPal’s original vision to create the new world currency.

It wouldnt overcome but it will hild a strong preferences in currency spending. People usually pay for btc with paypal at preev rate of 5-15% due to chargeback. Paypal is just having a really huge issue for the chargeback. Even the hard fork issue may came soon, yet i guess btc is still more realible to sent and receive as a payment

As far as I know, Bitcoin is controlling by the rich and the people have power in the world's economy. So, with a famous as the former director Paypal joined this field, I am not surprised because I knew we have some billionaire in this market, why do the famous not join this field too?

I would prefer to have both of them. Bitcoin has many advantages, which regular money does not have, but I don't think that somebody has completely refused to use "regular" money. On the moment currency is much more stable, so it is easy to use it for daily buying or selling goods. As for me, Paypal is reliable and easy to use. Bitcoin is interesting and innovative, but it need to gain some extra qualities in order to become a main payment instrument.

Bitcoin is very big now, the daily volume and the market cap has increased significantly, so if it has not beaten Paypal with today's status
of bitcoin then for sure it will easily happen in the future.

In the future, Bitcoin can take many forms and can bring down multiple operating systems. Bitcoin aims to be the future currency in the world and may be a much more agreeable alternative than PayPal.
