I personally would like to see a block size increase eventually.  And I imagine in time miners will signal in agreement to such a proposal, as will validating nodes.

But Hearn's post was a post mortem for bitcoin.  Without the change he considered it a failure.

You are right it would be a small change code wise.  Just as increasing the issuance cap, or even adding a perpetual block reward would be.   But like those, it was a fundamental shift that would change the entire system at a fundamental level.  I would say it was more about tearing up the social contract, game theory, economics, and security and starting over at the time.  I do not think the protocol was ready for such a change.  It may never be.

But I also think keeping blocks smaller and thereby protecting bitcoins decentralization is worth remaining conservative.

Yes, it seems that Hearn was wrong (so far) and premature in his actions. I'm just saying he wasn't advocating for anything too revolutionary. I think the change could have been carried through without much of a fuss if the right people had been in favor of it. But they weren't and ultimately carried the day.

Unfortunately, we live in a world where we can't do A/B testing on what the outcome of Hearn's suggestions being implemented would have been but we don't seem to be doing too badly at the moment. Either way, it's always risky to bet against the honey-badger.

We’re getting damn close to “shit or get off the pot” time for Bitcoin’s price. I think we’re going to see a big move towards the end of October and expect we’ll see a new all time high by November 2nd. Maybe that will be en route to a $200,000 Bitcoin exchange rate by the second week of December. Any variation from this path would have me getting concerned.

I doubt that bitcoin is on that strict of a schedule, so it does not seem to be good to be setting yourself or any of us up for unrealistic expectations that king daddy has to follow some kind of a strict timeline, otherwise the experiment is a failure.  Sounds crazy to merely summarize your position in words other than what you have used.

About LN, very interesting posts there, especially the long one by hisslyness (many thanks to him). I also remember Bob's struggle with LN some years back.

I don't know... I've never set up a LN node or anything, so I can't have an informed opinion, but the feeling I get by reading about it, is that it looks cool, simple, fast, cheap on the outside, but is quite complicated and messy on the inside. Also, the constant need for pampering the node, in order for it to function properly, is not good. These are not good signs, and I fear that they may cause problems for its future/success. I hope I'm totally wrong on this.

The whole thing brings back memories of Mike Hearn's blog post where he declares he's abandoning the Bitcoin project, and even jbreher's transaction limit posts here in WO... Don't get me wrong, I'm totally in favor of 2nd-layer solutions for micro-transactions and believe this is the future, but I sense that something may not be quite right (yet) in the current state of affairs in this matter. Yes, LN has been undergoing ever-increasing rounds of complexity as it seeks to provide what Bitcoin does on-chain off-chain. There are all sorts of caveats, gotchas and pitfalls and the need to settle on-chain introduces some interesting limitations as discussed by Peter Rizun and the scope creep has been quite large also (LN was originally envisioned for micro-transactions). Unfortunately, the censorship initiated by Theymos also removed a lot of the warning voices regarding potential issues with LN from the community and a largely sanitized presentation has prevailed. Hisslyness's post of his experiences is not too unexpected really.

I'm not going to make the obvious argument here because it's not helpful in context. It would be nice if LN could succeed but it seems to be very much an example of second system syndrome.

But because he was Covid negative, and since covid protocol would not allow his regular Dr's, those familiar with his specific conditions, to see him or be involved in his treatment, he was quickly discharged and put on oxygen. 8 days after his 70th birthday after being discharged from the hospital 4 times, he sat up on the edge of his bed and told my mother, "I can't breathe!" The irony of his last words, in June of 2020, "I can't breathe!" He then fell over and bled out from the aneurysm in his left lung that had grown to the point of rupturing since it was first detected in October of 2019. His Oncologist felt that it was more important to continue his treatments at that time, but wanted to look back with a bronchioscopy in February or March... Our hospitals were never overwhelmed, but the medical industry lost its collective mind! My father never had Covid-19 as my wife and I were very careful to avoid exposing him or my mother as we both went through it in May. He never had it, but it killed him just the same. I did have it, it sucked. And it cost me an additional 6 weeks of time with my father. 6 weeks of his last 8.

I had it, I beat it, and I have been exposed numerous times since. Because when the world shut down and my wife was furloughed I was needed much more urgently. My wife went ahead and got the Pfizer vaccine. She has a genetic autoimmune issue that made it seem sensible for her even though she had already beaten Covid in early 2020. Of course that was when it was deemed 94% effective 🙄 and she has since developed a heart murmur that nobody can explain. Probably not related, but who knows?

The guy has written some great stuff for the novice farmer on subjects like electric fencing, low cost cattle rearing etc.

To keep the dollars rolling in he is now an expert on every fucking thing.

He starts out with a particular standpoint on a subject and collects "facts" that fit that premise and disregards those that do not. That's not how science or decent investigative journalism works.
