I mostly watch Blu Ray as I still maintain the quality is superior compared to most streaming I've seen, mostly in the audio actually. On the PS5 disc edition it is quite glorious. Best way to enjoy my home theatre.

Will probably re-watch a couple of Christmas movies over the next few days: Scrooged, Home Alone, Christmas Vacation, Die Hard and maybe even A Wonderful life. That sort of stuff.

I couldn't agree more. Like you, I primarily watch movies I rewatch often only on blu-ray. People that only watch streaming movies have no idea what they are missing as far as the audio goes. The studios water down the surround sound to a 2.1 stereo mix for streaming purposes, and so much gets lost in the muddle, especially if they didn't remix it correctly. Or the TV itself has internal algorithms that will mix it down to a stereo mix that's not very good. Having blu-ray 5.1 or 7.1 surround-sound audio paired with a really great receiver/speaker setup makes a world of difference in movie enjoyment, especially with background music and the nuances of dialog.

I read a great article on this subject the other day:

https://www.slashfilm.com/673162/heres-why-movie-dialogue-has-gotten-more-difficult-to-understand-and-three-ways-to-fix-it/

Quote
"A lot of people watch it on their flatscreen with their sound bar and they think it's going to be an improved sound situation, but it may not translate," says Sylvester:

"Some TVs take the 5.1 [surround sound mix] and they turn it into a stereo. They have algorithms inside the TV. It's not even our mix. We don't even know what it sounds like. I think a lot of tuners do that, if you have a receiver — I know they have algorithms, and they also put coloring on it, like 'cinema approach' that adds reflection and noise and stuff that you don't want in the mix. That's another problem. You don't know how it's being presented in the home."

Other than what China has said, is there any reliable way to tell if a large portion of that hashrate isn't already coming from inside China?

Very interesting article Torque. It's one I will probably read twice because there is so much stuff in there.

I've been a bit of an audio junkie for years now, and still use a LaserDisc player with AC3 output to a 5.1 discrete decoder. The nice thing about Laserdisc for older movies is that the sound guys usually spent a lot of time getting it right for the 5.1 THX quality releases, much better than the junk on the standard VHS tracks or even most DVDs. So something like Titanic or Jurassic Park really explodes into life in my living room in a way that just doesn't happen on the Dolby Digital stereo matrix tracks.

And AC3 at its' core is a 5.1 mix encoded into a 320 (35mm)/384kbps (AC3-RF) analog bitstream. Which isn't much bandwidth to the modern home. Even a Blu-Ray quality audio is 600kbps so if streaming services are doing it slower then they are just plain ass lazy.

I think the other items identified, especially the annoying tendency of "star" actors to ignore a click beat and improvise their fucking lines has a lot more to do with them being unintelligible. The movies "Cats" and "Les Miserables" are both excellent examples of key characters ignoring the click beat so they can add their own special "spin" to their lines (which make the damn things mumble speak that they try to fix in post)

Fun stuff!

I'd say this was a joke, but after Phillip's report and the mass porting of numbers from that phone provider I'm not so sure. Stay vigilant....

same. as my inet sucks i would have to stream in low quality if indeed i could get even that. so bluray is it for me.

i also have a denon 7.1 receiver with audyssey for eq and use my old 4x10" ampeg bass cab as a sub. all run off my home built HTPC of course. it does the trick.

misophonia sucks, so ive been into home theater for decades, even before it was cool.

Misophonia is what drove me out of theaters years ago. All that food package rattling and low murmuring in the audience was just too distracting for me.

Is all that gobbledy gook going to help with UPpity..? because if so, you can count me "in"...

In the past day and a half or so, I was starting to develop some contentment with $49k, even though it was mostly ONLY lower $49ks and sometimes bouncing into the upper $48ks and then just in the past few hours causing less contentment by dippening into the lower $48ks which started to make me wonder whether we might not never see $49k ever again..

.. but then alas here we are in the past hour-ish gravitating back into the upper $48ks... so no need to worry about seeing $49k again, right?

Right?

Anyhow, go gobbledy gook, go.. make it so... when I refer to "it" I am trying to mean Uppity.

Well, I guess I should post random made-up gobbledy gook seeds more often.
3 cheers for the UPpity...

(fun fact...every time I quote Jay in full, I get millions of little red squiggly lines under lots of words in the preview, I cant imagine why....)

MY first "home theater" experience was jaws back in 1987(?) on vhs a pioneer stereo with large old school pioneer speakers and a 25 inch glass tube tv.

I used to build amps in the late 90's and early 00's

I have a denon and 5 diy focal speakers
along with 3 subs

I cross to 10 inch subs  at 60hz

and cross to a 15 inch sub behind the couch at 35hz

I got the sound good enough to realize I need to rebuild all the walls in the den for proper vibration control.

I used to live on the website audigon

Great link indeed, plenty of sense.

I know some things about audio processing - music not dialog - and not a movie buff, but I nodded my way through it.

Similar here. harman/kardon 5.1 system on a massive TV screen, dedicated home-built HTPC, and a good source of free, downloadable content, streamed via locally set-up Plex client/servers. After experiencing the immersiveness of watching a movie in that system, I rarely felt the need to visit a movie theater, except when I'm with friends.

I have access to Netflix via a friend's account, and, apart from some quality series, the content of movies worth watching is very limited. I don't think I would ever subscribe. OTOH, everything is available out there for free, and of very high quality, if you know where to look. My Plex server currently has about 200 movies in my "to watch" queue.
