However, you are right about Ethereum not being intended as vehicle to store value....it's a whole different technology all together.  What's built upon the Ethereum network is what provides its value.  Bitcoin, on the other hand, is used as means to store value and that value is subject to the whims of those who decide what its value should be....as long as people have confidence in its utility, it will maintain its value.  But, when you start witnessing a stronger demand for the more utilitarian technologies, then you can bet that the value of bitcoin will be tested.

It is just a side effect of a currency, i.e. if something is intended to be used as a currency (and a good currency at that), it should keep its value over time (more or less). Neither Bitcoin is intended to be a vehicle for speculation but things are as they are. Gold is just a metal like many other metals out there, it is humans which like shiny and solid things that made gold into a means of payment and a store of value. Nature never intended it to be used in this manner. In fact, it can't even intend as such. So this point is meaningless while its discussion is basically an exercise in futility and stupidity. If something keeps its value more or less constant (still better if it rises with time), you can be dead sure it will be used as a store of value (provided it is handy and convenient to use, of course)

I thought for sure it would take until the end of 2018 but it looks like this summer ethereum might pass it up. With the turmoil around BTC potential splitting, it might be very soon. IMO this is healthy, we will always value bitcoin for being the one that started it all, but it's time for a more dynamic and adaptable currency to take the lead.

To be honest if bitcoin were to collapse due to political reasons, I think the next coin in the race will be Litecoin and not Ethereum many don’t like Ethereum and think it is centralized, but Litecoin is basically bitcoin with segwit already activated, so to me that would be the best option.

I agree with guoyu78. BTC will always be number one currency even when another cryptocurrency approaches the BTC price. BTC is just safe.

Right now, bitcoin have no real alternative.
We are first, have strongest foundation, many merchants on our side...
Still, we have to be aware that things are changing very fast in Internet.
If Bitcoin will not change fast enough, some other crypto currencies may replace it, in the long term.
Many users are already very unhappy with high fees and confirmation waiting time.

Yes bitcoin is still the number one it will not collapse. Ethereum will not surpass bitcoin and I think it will encounter down fall of its price.Therefore, bitcoin will stands strong among other cryptocurrency.

Etherium really gives us spectacular price increase performance since it's inception but hey do others guy believe that is enough to replace Bitcoin? Let Etherium experience price incresae but no way it can surpass bitcoin. Bitcoin back in $200 price already used on some of the general services we need. Etherium breached $300 but I can't see even by few numbers using Etherium as mode of payment.

For other crypto to passed bitcoin, it's not with the price but for the usage.

Lol OP doesn't understand segwit2x so he started a thread to show his ignorance. Could you explain to me how bitcoins are "splitting" OP? Where do I get my two half bitcoins? Here I though I'd have 1 bitcoin on one blockchain and 1 bitcoin on another (dead) blockchain. Silly me.

As I see it, Bitcoin is becoming more and more a tool to hold value for long periods of time. Many use it as gold or other investments that don't have a lot of movement. If it keeps on going in that direction, it will be quite fine.

You do not need a lot of transaction capability or very fast transfers when you do them only every once in a while. And that is what you do when you have an asset to hold value mostly. There are other coins for faster transfers (as LTC) and we can derive into having LTC for daily and fast use and BTC to store. Do not see a problem with that.

Yes, it might be. Recently bitcoin is facing a problem with confirmation. It might take down bitcoin. On the other hand,  ether is rising very quickly. It can overtake bitcoin in future.

I think you are not updated with the latest problem ether facing same what bitcoin is facing even ether server is down and their is no transaction is going on in ether blockchain due to heavy transactions. So i think Bitcoin is number one and he will be number one always no other coin can over take him. They may rise for some time but in the end they will die as all other coins are controlled by their developers but bitcoin is control by their users

I also thought about it. Now the ethereum is actively being developed. It is often used and its exchange rate grows faster than in bitcoin and without jumps.
