I thought for sure it would take until the end of 2018 but it looks like this summer ethereum might pass it up. With the turmoil around BTC potential splitting, it might be very soon. IMO this is healthy, we will always value bitcoin for being the one that started it all, but it's time for a more dynamic and adaptable currency to take the lead.
Bitcoin will be always no.1 for sure. Bitcoin is really strong that there is no one altcoins that can surpass the bitcoin.

There is a small chance that BCH may surpass BTC in the distant future. But as of now, the hash rates are not comparable. The BTC hash rate is still much higher than that of the BCH. Right now, the BTC hash rate is at least 50% higher than the BCH hash rate.

I hold both. I think Ethereum will rise in value, as will Bitcoin. I think Bitcoin will remain the more valued asset because of the large attack surface of ethereum and the immutability issues.
All the digital currencies will make progress with time but Bitcoins makes it in leaps and bounds. No other currency has the potential to take its place. I prefer BCC over Eth honestly. Even BCC has brighter future than Ethereum. It was number one; it is number one and IT WILL REMAIN NUMBER ONE.

The only problems I see in Bitcoin currently is that transaction confirmations. That has made some people lean towards other crypto.

Once that's solved people will start using Bitcoin and then I doubt your statement.
Yes,bitcoin has no issue except transaction fee.Segwit has been activated at last to solve it.But some miners deliberately just mine empty blocks making huge number of transctions to get stuck. Some of them are chinese miners who either support BCC or they need higher mining fee for mining bitcoin. The chinese have always been a big problem to bitcoin network.Earlier, they manipulated bitcoin price by dumping their bitcoins and now they have started to create problems in transactions.Once,it is sorted out, then bitcoin price would start rising.

BTC has 2 problems then. It can't compete with visa and mastercard for transaction speed. ASICs are the bane of decentralization. China wins the ASIC race due to power costs. Some alts will go to extreme power effeciency, which will limit centralization. Allowing hobby miners back in. That's a third problem for Bitcoin, it has had a few half assed updates in it's lifetime and there are alts that can adapt to any situation. Bitcoin probably won't stay number one, it's only a matter of when, not if.

Technically, many alts are genuinely superior to bitcoin. The problem is no-one knows about them outside the cryptocurrency space. The mainstream media and Wall Street are fixated on bitcoin (as are all those venture capitalists in Silicon Valley hoping to create applications on top of bitcoin).

Marketing alts is HARD.

I agree that BTC has the potential to remain on top if it stays on the path that it is on now. But other currencies are breathing down it's neck and you never know, which of them could surpass BTC. It is a bit foolish not allowing this possibility

ETH is very good development, but ETH will not be able to exceed from Bitcoin.
Bitcoin will continue to be the best of altcoin others.
Bitcoin is 20 years forward compared to ETH, to do i think the days of the bitcoin are still persistent.

I do not rule out that bitcoin can be overcome by other cryptomonets in the future but this will not happen in the next few years. People who have nothing to do with cryptovalues know only bitcoin and for this reason the general adoption phase will happen first with bitcoin than with other coins. When then the average user will be able to join this technology we may see overtaking by other cryptovalutes that can be technologically more advanced

So you believe that ethereum is sitting at around $4,000 per unit? You believe that ethereum has the same Market volume as Bitcoin. This is the silliest thing I've ever heard. And silly is pretty much the word for it.. There is no way any time soon as some other coin is going to come along and offset all of that. There is no way that they're going to match the market volume and there is no way that they're going to match the price.

In my opinion bitcoin will still be the number crypto currency. because bitcoin is the first cyrpto currency to be released by in the world. Also many users and investors are using bitcoin as thier primary crypto wallet like me. So in that case bitcoin will still last for more than more years from now.

i don't think ethereum will ever cross bitcoin and be the number one in the future. i think if we say that bitcoin is the father than i think according to me ethereum is mother and its price really rely on bitcoin to rise. i think the margin of profit in ethereum is better than in bitcoin but replacing bitcoin as number one by ethereum is not possible i think.

Perhaps in the future it will be replaced by a more sophisticated crypto currency, but now it is the first and the strongest. He does not have huge shortcomings except for a long transaction.

I'm just wondering what number one in the world of crypto currencies means.
Bitcoin has and always will have the biggest community behind it.
Exactly because everything started with bitcoin. Bitcoin is the entrance door for everybody who enters the crypto world. And most people stay there.
The number of people who own and use a coin, that is the most importatnt thing I would say.
Referring to the market capitalization: that number does not say much about a currency in my oppinion. It does not say anything about how a coin is distributed.

  It's me!!!

Probably this is correct but in the current trend, there is no one that can match Bitcoin in terms of community and support.  Bitcoin since it is the first decentralized blockchain being released had cater lots of supporter and keep on growing.  But with the scaling problem arises there are lots of upcoming cryptocurrency that had a more advance technology.  It may only take sometime until a new one is developed and eventually overthrow Bitcoin from being King of cryptocurrency.

Perhaps in the future it will be replaced by a more sophisticated crypto currency, but now it is the first and the strongest. He does not have huge shortcomings except for a long transaction.

No it won't be replaced a by a more sophisticated crypto currency. Bitcoin is the origin of all crypto's and how come it can be replaced by just a new crypto. Okay, I say it's possible because bitcoin doesn't have the feature of other alt coins that everyone is looking for. And a new coin can come out that has all the features that everyone wants but still bitcoin will remain to be the number one as long as the market cap of it still gets higher.

I don't find any other crypto has same future of Bitcoin. Bitcoin is only one digital currency changed the technology to the next level, many new companies are planning to adopt the technology and implement their products into Blockchain technology which can give more awareness to the people.
