Thank you for the opportunity to get whitelisted quickly. I'll opt the old fashion way--putting in my hours reading and posting(s).

I do want to share an idea, though. If any trusted member would like to accept donations for a cause, I have one that would only require collecting $75. It is this one: http://www.sturgismotorcyclerally.com/info-guide/brick-project.php

Full disclosure: I'm not affiliate with that site, but am plugging my Brother-in-Law (name withheld). I'll tell you why I was there in a sec. The site has a rotating banner ad and this one caught my eye so I waited till it came back around (just thought about Alice's Restaurant for a second there) and clicked it. After reading the article, I said to myself, "Self. That would make a nice post on the Bitcoin Forum." Hence this posting.

<Shameless Commerce> (apologies to Car Talk's Click and Clack) Alert: The reason for being at the site is I wanted to see what date it started this year. Also, to get design ideas for my B-I-L to help design the Google Doodle to represent the 71st anniversary of Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. My B-I-L is an artist and, moreover, hand tools leather seats the old school way. He tooled three seats for Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, two of which are in his museum(s). Also, he's been featured in over a dozen magazines. </Shameless Commerce>

So, I'm hoping there's a bitcoin user here on this forum who rides and would love to see a brick with Bitcoin.org placed on Main Street in Sturgis, SD, step up to the plate and make this happen. I, for one, would donate .25 BTC. At that rate, you'll/we'll only need 348 more donations (provide you donate same) to reach the goal.

Maybe the above idea is just a brain fart, but at least I eat healthy.

I've been brainstorming for some time about a business that would provide escrow and arbitration services while helping people stay anonymous.  It's very much in the vaporware stage at the moment.  For now I'm calling it A-Bay, though I'm sure it will need another name.

A-Bay addresses an age-old problem, made all the more severe in the anonymous environment of bitcoin: suppose Alice wants to buy some Alpaca socks from Bob.  If she pays in advance, how can she be sure Bob will deliver the socks?  On the other hand, if Bob ships the socks first, how can he be sure Alice will pay?  In most cases Alice must prepay, and therefore she limits herself to sock merchants that she can trust.  This means she can't shop around too much, because there are only so many trustworthy sock merchants.

The basic proposal is for Alice and Bob to choose an escrow service that they both trust.  Alice will send payment to the escrow service, who will forward it to Bob only after he delivers the socks.  The challenge is for A-Bay to build up such a good reputation as an escrow service that nearly all buyers and sellers trust them.  Then Alice can shop around, considering any and all sock merchants who have a good price, regardless of reputation, provided only that they are willing to use A-Bay.  Simply put, people trust A-Bay so that they don't have to trust anyone else.

Actually, I want A-Bay to offer more than just escrow service.  It should provide arbitration in the event of a dispute.  Also, it should help people stay anonymous, including A-Bay personnel themselves; this makes buyers and sellers more comfortable, it reduces arbitrator bias, and it keeps escrow agents from becoming targets for theft.

A-Bay's escrow agents and arbitrators need to be highly trusted, yet they need to remain anonymous.  This sounds like a contradiction!  My solution is to introduce one more A-Bay role: ambassador.  Only ambassadors have known identities; all others (buyers, sellers, escrow agents and arbitrators) remain anonymous.  In fact, an ambassador is someone who is trusted precisely because of who he is.  Some examples of possible ambassadors are Stefan Molyneux, Claire Wolfe and Brad Spangler.  You don't have to agree with everything these people write.  (I certainly don't.)  You just have to be confident that they are moral, responsible people who won't rip you off.

An ambassador's primary reponsibility is to recommend brokers, typically 3 of them.  These should be people the ambassador has known for years, in whom he has complete confidence.  The brokers remain anonymous.  Essentially, the ambassador is saying, "Here are the email addresses and public keys of 3 people that I trust implicitly.  I'm not going to reveal their identities, but I can assure you that they will treat your contract with the utmost fairness and discretion."  Brokers in turn recommend escrow agents and arbitrators.

The reason for the extra level of indirection (between ambassadors and brokers) is so that ambassadors are not directly involved in any contracts.  They are the ones with known identities, so certain evil people might try to coerce them into revealing information.  This way, ambassadors can honestly say, "I have no information about any specific contracts."

To protect ambassadors further, A-Bay can have lots of ambassadors, say 20 of them.  Each one recommends 3 brokers, yielding a list of 60 email addresses and public keys.  This list is shuffled, so that each ambassador knows his 3 brokers are in the list somewhere, but he doesn't know which ones.  That way, if an evil person tries to coerce the ambassador into revealing the identity of a particular broker, the ambassador can honestly say, "The broker you used is not necessarily one of the 3 I recommended.  In fact, the odds are against it."

The main criticism of A-Bay is that it introduces a lot of overhead.  This is true!  As a rule of thumb, I would expect overhead of around $20 per contract.  This means the contract amount needs to be large, say at least $400.  Otherwise, the overhead becomes prohibitive.

There's a lot more to say, but I'll wrap up this introduction for now.  See this presentation for more information.  I'm looking for people to help me flesh out the details.  Please PM me if interested.  Thanks.

Hi, I've been working on Bitcoin Evolution (http://bitcoinevolution.com/http://bitcoinevolution.net), a free sales tracking service, for the last 3 or 4 weeks and am almost ready to launch it. Feel free to get an account and play around. You will notice that there are a few features missing at the moment.

When Bitcoin Evolution is completed you will be able to:

  • add/edit/delete items in 3 different types: products, services, and subscriptions
  • subscriptions can be set up to be recurring
  • set prices in BTC or USD (which will be translated to BTC with the current exchange rate)
  • mark orders as paid or unpaid, and then actioned or unactioned (product shipped, service rendered, or subscription granted)
  • easily embed a "Buy", "Buy Now", "Pay", or "Subscribe" button in your website provided by Bitcoin Evolution or use your own image to link the order form
  • use an order form that opens in a nice modal window and can be customized
  • embed the buy button with a simple piece of code

Many of the features are already in place and many of the others will be implemented shortly. If you're too lazy to sign up for an account (don't be; it's quick), you can always use one of my testing user accounts:

Username: "TestUser2011"
Password: "password7"

The embed code is this simple:
Code:
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://bitcoinevolution.com/api.js"></script>
<a href="javascript:void(0);" class="btnTransaction" onclick="btcTransaction(4, 4);">
    <img src="http://bitcoinevolution.com/includes/images/btnBuyNow.png" alt="Buy Now" title="Buy Now" />
</a>

You can see the buttons and order forms in action in question number 3 of the FAQ page (http://bitcoinevolution.com/faq).

Please let me know what you think. I will start a thread in the "Project Development" section soon so I can issue periodic updates as I move towards launch (I should be done all the basic features in early July, possibly sooner and will then continue to develop after that).

Edit: I should also mention that I'm going to make it easy for you to export your order records to Excel (a CSV file) as well which should make it easy for people that want to use the Bitcoin Evolution service but retain their data on a spreadsheet on their computer or migrate order data to their own database.

I'm a Debian Developer and experienced Software Architect, I did a small Python layer around the RPC API (see the Wiki). I'm working on other server side Python code (i.e. to calculate exchange rates using bitcoincharts' JSON APIs) and want to write enough code to integrate a custom (Python) shoping cart system with Bitcoin. Maybe the resulting code can be integrated with other systems (i.e. Satchmo). I'm a cryptography expert and did a lot of crypto related implementations (closed source at work) in the last few years. I'm not proficient enough with C++ to help with original Bitcoin code though.

I have a friend who is a hypnotist and runs online courses as well as personal coaching and therapy. I got all hyped up about the BitCoin and he said that he will consider offering his services in BitCoins (lol, a first BitCoin hypnotist Wink ).

Can you please give some links to a step by step BitCoin manual - how to start running BitCoin operated business, how to promote in the bitcoin economy, how to promote services, and how in easy way prevent oneself from theft. I want to read it all, to make it easier for my buddy who is not a tech savy guy.

Thanks a lot Smiley

I just finished putting up a bitcoin poker room. We are working on adding namecoin support and e-sports betting.

I'll post more details as I get the domain setup and everything else.

There are a lot of exciting projects in this thread.

I am in the process of getting an online pet store up and running (www . luckyandjinx . com) and I would very much like to participate in the thread re: BTC Meganto plugin so that we can offer goods and services for btc.

The site is up but not released to the public yet.

I am currently mining with a 5850 and am familiar with the concepts of BTC, forum etiquette, etc and am a Java and c# developer with over a decade of experience.

Please white list my account.

It's not really a miner, it's more of a miner GUI for momchil's and jzdarikz or some shit like that's miners.

I run  a couple of businesses in Australia.

One of them sells beef direct from the farmer to the customer across the eastern seaboard of Australia.  Our "hook" is our completely transparent pricing structure and margins coupled with full traceability of the animal plus sausages that are edible for those with chemical sensitivities (gluten, additives etc...).

Starting July 2011, we will be accepting Bitcoins.

My suppliers (farmers) obviously know about trade, but they won't take Bitcoins.  Yet.

To pull this off, I need a Bitcoin derivatives market.  The current volatility* makes the case for options and futures essential.

What is the current state Bitcoin derivatives?

*I am a big supporter of speculators.  Bitcoin needs them in the price discovery journey.

Yes we do.. I should really make a signature..

http://www.btcvc.com/

There are a list of outstanding ideas that have been submitted available through the blog, and we're working to update with some new ideas we've received! We also have been contacted by a few BTC investors, but obviously we're keeping that list close to the cuff for security purposes.
