Hey doog! Sorry to hijack your thread!

Just a reminder you can now purchase Just-Dice.com and CLAM merchandise at http://www.kingklye.com/shop

No problem.

I often go shopping for coffee mugs but have trouble finding anything costing much more than $10-$15. Sad

Being a rich snob obviously this will not do. I find myself wishing there was some place I could find a mug of the same quality but for twice the price. And now my wish has come true!

Thanks KingKlye! Wink

Oh this one is much better!

You need to make an option to get personalized mugs (unless there already is the option). They will most likely cost more but it would not be an issue.

P.S You can also sell your own art on the mugs haha

Hi guys,

something weird I stumbled across when studying a small martingale. I used to think that if the house has an edge of p (say 1/100), than on average it will earn from a bet 1/100 of that bet.

However, lets see the following simple case, where the bankroll is 1 clam, the player is playing with 1 clam at a time, with 0.505 probability of losing his/her clam. The player plays two times in a row. Then, with probability 0.505*0.505 the bankroll will become 3 clams and with probability 0.505*0.495 it will stay to 1. All other times the bankroll is taken by the player. The "expected bankroll" is thus 1.01505, which is "much" less than the expected 1.02!!!

What it seems happening is that the fact that the bankroll cannot recover from zero, and this cuts out some profitable plays from the player. I reworked the same example, but with a bankroll of 3, and its expected value is the "correct" 3.02.

I am quite surprised by this and I am not even sure I did a sound reasoning, I would really like to hear your opinion. If this was already a well established fact please forgive me, references would be appreciated.

So, what you are saying is you can decrease the house edge (in you example from 1% to 0.7525%) in your favor,  your rolls are on the same order as the bankroll, and you have a chance of bankrupting (forgot the real term) the house. The problem with it is that bets are limited to 1% of the bankroll (which now is largely virtual but leveraged investors would lose first). When JD still used BItcoin, one player came close to defeat the house, and investors panicked and eventually dooglus panicked as well and limited the bets to .25%. So unfortunately you don't have much opportunity to use your method Wink

You're saying the house has 1 CLAM, and is willing to risk it all on a single bet I think. We wouldn't actually do that, but for the sake of argument I'll let you have that.

So there are 3 possibilities:

1) the player wins his first bet, the house is bust, probability = 0.495, profit = 1
2) the player loses his first bet and wins his second, probability = 0.505 * 0.495, profit = 0
3) the player loses both bets, probability = 0.505 * 0.505, profit = -2

So the player's expected profit is:

    >>> 1 * 0.495 + 0 * 0.505*0.495 + (-2) * 0.505*0.505
    -0.01505

as you said.

If the player was always making 2 bets then his expected profit will be -1% of 2, or -0.02. So why is his expected profit greater in this case?

Well, the reason is because sometimes he's only making one bet. His expected risk is smaller, and so his expected losses (being 1% of his expected risk) are proportionally smaller.

What's his expected risk? Well, with p=0.495 he bets 1 unit, and with p=0.505 he bets 2 units. So his expected total stake is:

    >>> 0.495 * 1 + 0.505 * 2
    1.505

This matches precisely -100 times his expected profit, as expected.

So, what you are saying is you can decrease the house edge (in you example from 1% to 0.7525%) in your favor,

Not really. You can't change the house edge. You always expect to lose 1% of the amount you risk.

What he's saying is that by sometimes stopping after risking only 1 unit, your expected total risk is less than if you always risk 2 units, and so your expected loss is less.

Less risk = less expected loss.

You're missing out.  If you have a covered outdoor area with a solid floor, a rocking chair is hard to beat.

I'm only grumpy about ebooks because I haven't found many that don't come with drm.

I guess knowing your username would be useful. Or your deposit address. Or a deposit transaction ID.

There's an email address at the end of the FAQ tab for customer support if you prefer to have this conversation there.

I like the just-dice site and I plan to create a CLAM service myself. Don't know if it will be gambling related, but I think would be a good idea to use a server where gambling is allowed, if I decide to provide such a service. A quick googling says that there are problems in some countries and servers can be shutdown if they run a gambling site. Which hosting company does just-dice use to avoid this? I found a list of offshore hosting companies, but they are very expensive compared to standard hosting offers. I don't expect many customers for my site at the beginning, so server costs would be not covered by the site profit. A small VPS would be sufficient, or even just a webserver (but I think a VPS would be better, want to play with Node.js). I can run the clamd server elsewhere.

Hi Dooglus , I am joining to this question.
I also consider create some clam-driven webgame.
I admire just-dice as site that has not been hacked.
In cryptocurrency world, where sites disappears and being hacked, every badly secured service can cause harm to entire "industry".
Can you share with us some tips, how to create secure webservice as yours?
I don't want you to reveal us your company secrets, just some useful tricks that will help us all build secure services. (Or just useful links, I googled before I asked, but maybe not enough)

Thanks :-)

I'm not trying to speak for dooglus, but I think your question is a little too generic to really merit a proper answer.  As you've asked it, the answer to your question is some sort of 4 month course on how to secure a website.  I think you'd get farther if you:

1) Use the CLAM thread to talk to the CLAM community generally (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=623147.0;topicseen) (there's an IRC channel as well, which might be more appropriate for conversational style questions with the CLAMmers)
2) Ask a specific question

Good luck!

I don't see how setting up a gambling website is related to CLAM, could be BTC, too. My question was, if Doog can recommend a hosting service which has some protection from laws in restricted countries (for example, what I've read is that you should not run a server in the US, because online gambling is illegal in this country, or you need some special license), but of course, would be nice if he can give some tips for hardening the server as well. JD uses Cloudflare as a service in front of the server, which looks like a good start, if not too expensive.

Uh, here's why I associated your question with CLAM:

I like the just-dice site and I plan to create a CLAM service myself.

Again, I wasn't speaking for dooglus, and really I was addressing Faust Roland, who posted below you asking for some very general advice on website security.
