I would say bitcoin because you can get more profit by investing in bitcoins while ethereum is very steady and growth is very slow as well. Both are good coins for long term investment but bitcoin does provide higher return than ethereum.

Why choose if you could have both. If we are talking about security and profitability, either is a good choice. Bitcoin grows tremendously just within days and weeks compared to ETH so I prefer Bitcoin. However, diversifying is good for this type of world. I suggest that you buy some Bitcoin and some Ethereum. This way, if one goes down, you have another asset you could hold on. BCH is a promising option as well, just a suggestion, though.

Try to invest in eth too.  Price is obviously lower than bitcoin but maybe in the future its price will get higher like what's happening now with bitcoin.  Bitcoin is "still" the best cyrptocurr out there but there's no harm trying out other currency too.
Make some risks, those who are millionaires now because of bitcoin took risks too.

As a fresher into bitcoin and crypto currencies, I will advise you go into investing in ethereum, not bitcoin (ie when you come in with fiat). If you can sell some altcoins to buy bitcoin in trading, that will be more better, but when it comes to bitcoin, buying a full bitcoin is too expensive.

For me bitcoin is better than ethereum in terms of price because bitcoin now is already unstoppable but ethereum is not. Ethereum decrease so fast but bitcoin is increasing rapidly.
