I tend to advise to invest into bitcoin, because more and more bitcoins are accepted by a country and automatically increasingly guaranteed to increase.
but ETH and BCH are my second suggestion.

You don't know what the Bitcoin or Ethereum's value will do whatsoever and nobody does for that matter.
Bitcoin is a much safer option, especially now that it has dipped quite a bit.

OP, I'd advise you to invest 50% in Bitcoin and the other 50% in the next top 10 currencies by market cap. Or simply go all in on Bitcoin. You'll profit nevertheless.

Yes, buying Ethereum can be a good investment as it can be poised for more growth in 2018...who knows it can double within the first 6 months next year (this is just my speculation and I am not good in predicting things). However, you need to also diversify so my advice is you also buy some Bitcoin as there would be more growth for the King of Coins next year. As always, do your own due diligence, gather all the facts and then decide...after that you need to pray that you made a good decision. Go with cyptocurrencies that have a unique characteristics that is profitable like Monero, ETH, Bitcoin, etc. But do not go with alts that is just a fork of bitcoin with no added value in it like bitcoin cash, or gold or any color and minerals appended to bitcoin or eth. I think that for a beginner it is better to start with bitcoin. It is more secure for investment. To the beginner it will be difficult to understand all the variety of altcoins. 1) Learn how to securely store your coins and get a hardware wallet such as a Ledger Nano S or a Trezor. Not getting hacked is half the battle, the other battle is not getting scammed out of your coins, which brings me to:

2) Avoid ICOs and HYIPs like a plague.

3) I personally mostly stay away from alts since even the more innovative ones have failed to fully convince me (eg. ETH doesn't scale well either and has insecure smart contracts, BCH is just BTC with less features and bigger blocks, IOTA currently requires a central authority, XRP is fully centralized to begin with, LTC is just BTC with shorter block times and a different hashing algorithm...) but it might be a different story for you. Long term BTC has been the most reliable cryptocurrency so far, so I'd recommend starting with that.

As a long term investment I don't think its too late but I'd advise waiting for the first signs of recovery after this current dip before buying in.

Investing around times of insane record highs and the early/middle stages of subsequent corrections (like now) isn't advisable with any stock imo. The desire to do so is just FOMO.

The pattern of bitcoin seems to be: long period of steady increase > huge sudden increase > equally sudden correction > long period of steady increase etc.

Right now we appear to be in the midst of a correction phase after the most insane price jump bitcoin has ever seen. Just look at the graphs and you'll be able to see when bitcoin has returned to a more steady upwards trajectory.

If you decide to invest then try not to obsess over the live charts because it'll just send you mad and you might end up panic selling at the first sign of price decrease. Remember, its a very volatile asset to own, it can jump and decrease a lot just in the course of a day.

Personally I'd recommend pulling out your original 10k the second you see 100% gain on it and just play with the remaining 10k profit btc. This way if it crashes you'll have only wasted time as opposed to time and money.

How sure are you that next year is the year for ethereum? No one can tell if what will happen on the prices of the crypto currency. It will really depend on the demand that the coin will have. Bitcoin's price will continue to rise on the next years and I don't think that Ethereum will be able to go over it's rate in the next years.

If ICOs keep happening then ethereum will go up. If they get regulated/shutdown ethereum will have to find a new way to grow. They are a clever bunch so I have faith in them though!

You're never too late to invest. But which coins you should buy depends partly on your risk tolerance in the short-term vs. long-term.

For example, BTC has been on a rapid rise. If you invest now there's a significant chance it might go down in the short-term, so you would need to wait longer to get your investment back.

If you invest in something like NEO or XMR, it's not as likely to crash (in my opinion) so there's greater potential for short-term growth. But you might not have as much long-term potential with these coins as you would with BTC or ETH.

Oh my God. Thats very sad. Probably you should have followed Warren Buffets principles in this case. 284 BTC today is valued at over $5 Million. Thats a huge loss you have to deal with. Its never too late though. There are still a couple of opportunities and I have been following one very closely called P2PS. That was a good advice, but those altcoins are pretty expensive to buy but worth to hodl for sure, if you wanted to do short trade, then there is a lot of altcoins is the exchanges out there for you to make easy profits. The term "too late" is not appropriate to use since it will never be too late as long as there are cryptocurrencies out there with their prices.

Investing on cryptocurrencies is more better than investing to those HYIP or Ponzi scams out there, you might lose profits on Trading, but at least you are sure that you could take it back next time.
