Invest in ICO or buy BTC?

You can also think about to buy ETH.
For newbies I would say its better to buy BTC instead of join ICOs.

I agree that for newbies is better to invest in BTC or ETH (just because it is much more safe), but for experienced users that know how to investigate project, much more profitable invest in ICO. Perspective projects can bring thousands percent of profit.

It depends on your budget, for me to have a win win situation atleast. you can invest the half of your budget to ICO then half of it buying BTC. Of course be careful to which ICO you will be investing with for there are tons of ICO right now.
