Well, it really is something that can happen and although I do not think that it can happen any time soon it really can happen. And it is just right to think about what might happen when it really does become reality.

If this happens, I think that it will really make a lot of bitcoin supporters lose money. But other than that, I really cannot see any other problems. Well, maybe if that happens there would be a huge dump in all crypto amd may take a long time before it recovers. But who knows? Oh well, we'll know when it happens. Lol.

bitcoin has an anonymous creator that creates a sense of decentralization and at the same time makes people trust the currency, but other altcoins have their creators that are not anonymous and are centralized which in my opinion will make people not trust so much in the currency, based on my reasoning I do not believe people would dump their bitcoin to buy altcoin and that altcoin to become the new king

Such a situation won't come because the last time another crypto tried to take over bitcoin, the particular coin faced its worst dump ever later on. Now, I do not think there is any altcoin that can replace the bitcoin's position in the cryptocurrency market. Bitcoin always has a tremendous support community and its value, although volatile but stable, is the basis for evaluating other crypto coin. I believe in the next few years the value that bitcoin will have is huge because of its rarity.

Now, I do not think there is any altcoin that can replace the bitcoin's position in the cryptocurrency market. Bitcoin always has a tremendous support community and its value, although volatile but stable, is the basis for evaluating other crypto coin. Yes there are altcoins that is possible to replace bitcoin. The ethereum and ripple, I think they can do it since bitcoin has a problem right now dealing with transaction fees. Investors may change their preference in investing in cryptocurrency and may the reason why ethereum and ripple can change the game.

The problem with ETH is that it depends on BTC. If BTC fails at any point you can expect a huge crash on all other crypto markets and the less real adoption the greater the crash. You could easily see it during the last BTC correction. There was a number of FUD news that targeted BTC and all markets suffered a hit. Coins like XRP that don't really have support and are based on the belief that they will be used by banks one day.
I'd be careful with putting huge money in ETH, because BTC has to succeed first to pave the way for altcoins.

Bitcoin could lose top spot for a number of reasons and the way the crypto market would be would change with each. Nothing all that spectacular would change though. Well to reach that state, that means that 3 things could have happened.

1) People decided to pull most of their money out of Bitcoin, so the evaluation of it goes down and so does the market cap, allowing for a new coin to come up.

2) More people decided to put their money into a new coin than there already is in Bitcoin, so the new coin rises above bitcoin in terms of market cap.

3) A mixture of both of the above.

In the case that a new currency is seen as the "main" one, it's likely that it'll end up being the one that moves into the future for a while. We haven't really seen any coins that have taken Bitcoin's place, so it's very hard to state what would happen as of now, but I think if a new coin comes up, Bitcoin will go very far down.

Well, this idea is very difficult to achieve , especially in coming years because the king Bitcoin exceeds all currencies in many things ( Price, Market Cap, Volume..). So the most investors always choose Bitcoin as a best choice to develop their financial profitability. Furthermore, despite  that many governments tried to break it, but they always failed to achieve that goal, and always remains that currency at the top of the market, Although all the difficulties, Bitcoin always stays at the top of cryptocurrencies.

I think it's really difficult to predict the immediate effects of such a scenario, much less the longer term repercussions (or benefits) of such an event. As pointed out by some very astute observers, it would take a convergence of several unlikely scenarios for it to have a chance to happen, most significant being that people lose confidence or see less value in Bitcoin while at the same time doing the opposite for an alternative cryptocurrency.

The world and their governments right now only recognise Bitcoin - perhaps a small corporate segment is familiar with Ether. I cannot see a scenario where Bitcoin declines while another rises up. For almost the entire world outside of our community, crypto and blockchain is Bitcoin.

Yes, you read that well -- Bitcoin's market cap has been surpassed by a few coins already, and it meant absolutely nothing. Ripple did it twice, and a few utter absolute trash coins did so too. Why? There is always a possibility it could happen if the coin that will take over bitcoin would be able to get the trust of the cryptocommunity and will be use for its purpose. We may see bitcoin as a store of value now but we can see that some are using it as payment transaction so it still serve its purpose. The process might just speed up in terms of selling of the bitcoin. This is because as always people will want to trust the coin which is at the first place. In my view, the effect would largely depend on how long this bitcoin competitor is going to remain there and by how much it is going to exceed bitcoin's market cap. If it is due to some random event or purely by chance, nothing of importance will happen. It does't really matter.

As of now Bitcoin reached the highest market cap yet. And because of that, many platforms open towards Bitcoin. And for this reason they knew that, they can make profit out of this. Soon different coin-based wallets emerged, various exchange, etc. people are starting to use it as soon as they've realized that Bitcoin is in a different level when it comes to investments and making profits. So it gave Bitcoin an even more wide range of possibilities, and it gained its reputation and become a trend all over the world. Thus, the price skyrocketed.

So if ever an Altcoin would ever be able to replace Bitcoin, it will just going to do the same loop. At first many people would doubt about the coin, accepting it that instantly, what if its a bubble, and the likes. But soon, if its price would go even higher or atleast in steady (that means this Altcoin is higher that the current price of Bitcoin), then people will again start taking advantage out of it, repeating itself.

Yes that is right but i do not think that it will happen in near future, because in current time bitcoin is the main crypto currency where people are more interested to invest their money as compare to any other crytpo currency. Yes for sure, it will remain as the first on the list, but I don’t know if that’s forever, it’s also possible that another cryptocurrency can take its place if it no longer offers what investors are expecting from it, just like many were complaining last year that the fees for transaction was too much and they did correct it this year, and we can all see that the fees is now very low.

IIRC, it happened once that Ripple actually surpassed Bitcoin's market cap, but that was during a pump that was never going to be sustainable. It has never meant anything, and people completely ignored it.

I agree that we really don't hold of what the future could be. Once the bitcoin max cap will reach, we really don't know what will happen next. I don't think so. All alt currencies are pegged to btc. If you want to swap, you almost always go via btc. If you have to pay tax, then pegging it all to btc would also be probably be done. Changing it would require divine intervention, even if the successor is better.

Yes, in time it probably will. Right now its the biggest player in town and everyone that talks about cryptos will talk about Bitcoin in the first place. Ethereum is 2nd best known. The rest you only get to know about once you dive into this crazy world.

It does not necessarily mean that would happen. The fact that bitcoin as the highest market cap does not mean the reason why its movement control the market. It simply because it is the first, it has a huge support, it is tagged as a pair with most altcoins and this makes it hard for a lot of altcoins to stand on their own. Market cap to me is really not the judge of a support for a coin as some coins like XRP or EOS which is centralized can even easily be manipulated to that extent.

But definitely I will not select. Marketcap is a least significant measurement for me to choose one coin for longer investment in my view. If ever the dumped you're talking about happen that will definitely affect the market and will cause the market to crash. As you can see the price of every cryptos are proportional to bitcoin so when the dumped happened the price of bitcoin will go down and so the other cryptos.

Good point right there, dumping btc means dumping majority of the alts as well, because btc has been the main basis of their respective value in the market.
I dont see any reasons why the btc will be dethroned by another coin/token. For the next 10 years btc still sits atop of all cryptocurrency.

I think it is not a big deal for me since they are just all cryptocurrency and their purpose is only one. Though they have differences in the platform, their goal is to give a decentralized and digital transaction.
