We first need Luke JR or ckolivas to add support in their scrypt mining programs...so we'll have to wait.
I'll watercool mine, but I'll run it on air till xmas. Not sure if I'll get reference or a non ref though. Depends on price and features.

Tbh, I don't see why mining software has to change. What an owner of a 290x card has to make sure is that drivers and OpenCL SDK are available.

If those numbers are correct, then the 280x is better for mining. They are a bit cheaper than 7970, and hansh at about the same speed. To be honest, i was expecting a bit more from the 290x..

Yeah, me too. Until new 20nm production process, good old Tahiti or ASIC...

Seems not a good deal as expected, but if the power is way more efficient maybe I would give it a try...

The scrypt hashrate is the only one that matters. No one cares for SHA256 on GPU nowadays.

It's readily available...
I suggest waiting for the r9 290, should draw less power and be slightly slower, whilst costing $100 less.

Any idea when they launch this card? I always though they launch it together with R9 290x...

If ckolivas optimizes cgminer for it we should be able to get over 1000kh/s with proper settings and some oc, whilst drawing 275-300w.

Those numbers are obviously correct for the one guy that posted them. That doesn't mean it's some sort of reference for this card, even more after releases with custom coolers.
