Venezuela’s government announced the start of electricity rationing in western Zulia state as well as water rationing in Caracas to reduce demand on the power grid, a day after Ford Motor Co. (F) halted production in Latin America’s largest oil exporter. The second-largest U.S. automaker joins competitor Toyota Motor Corp. (7203) and Dutch truck-maker CNH Industrial NV (CNHI) in suspending assembly in the South American country because of the difficulty of obtaining dollars to import parts from the government. Shortages of everything from water to car parts and flour to pregnancy tests come after three months of protests against the government of President Nicolas Maduro that have left at least 41 people dead. The government yesterday said it will start rationing electricity and water as drought drains hydroelectric reservoirs and water tanks. http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-05-07/venezuela-to-ration-electricity-after-colombia-cuts-gas.html

Meanwhile, more deaths: Clashes flare after Venezuela student camps raided, one deadhttp://www.reuters.com/article/2014/05/08/us-venezuela-protests-raids-idUSBREA470MT20140508Venezuelan troops on Thursday rounded up hundreds of youth activists and dismantled camps set up to protest against President Nicolas Maduro, and a policeman was shot dead in the demonstrations and clashes that ensued around Caracas. Pre-dawn raids by National Guard troops broke up four tent camps maintained by student activists in the capital of the OPEC member nation during three months of protests.

The most amazing thing is, whether you question my motives, if I am getting paid or not, is the total lack of the "big media" covering the situation in Venezuela... No matter your political position.

Because people don't really care what's happening there ? Just like North Korea.

Although isolated deaths are occurring, the rate of increase in the death toll has been slowed down in Venezuela. Now the MSM is mostly focusing on Ukraine, with most of the remaining time and space taken up by the Syrian conflict. We can say that the Venezuela riots have been overshadowed by the Ukrainian crisis and the Syrian civil war.

I might ask the same question about the Lonmin mine deaths near Johannesburg Wilikon. Don't simply ask. Share it. Post it. Let people know about any event you believe is not covered well enough. I am thanking you for letting me know about that subject, without questioning your motivations or how big the check you got from the National Union of Mineworkers was...

This is one interesting article I found while browsing for news about Venezuela. Sorry to see that this thread is no longer updated and most poeple are focused only on Ukraine. http://online.wsj.com/articles/venezuela-pays-price-for-smuggling-1402271308When controlling the price of goods backfires: With its heavy intervention in the economy, Venezuela now imports three-quarters of what it consumes but loses a third of its goods to illegal cross-border trade, its government estimates. Some economists say Caracas exaggerates the smuggling problem to mask its own inability to keep supermarkets stocked.

man, what is it with those central/south american countries and violence and contraband? it's like most governments either have too much control on the people (like venezuela), or not enough control on its people (like mexico).

Ridiculous, socialism has been proven time and time again to fail. People keep falling for the same mistakes, if you don't learn from history you are doomed to repeat it.
I agree. Plasma TVs are a terrible choice in 2013 Sorry for the necro-post, but I couldn't resist: in 2013 plasmas were THE BEST choice for quality TVs, same picture quality as best OLEDs, at a fraction of the price. The problem is with the article saying someone wanted a 'Sony plasma', which is retarded: Sony quit the plasma business years ago, at that time it was still possible to buy Panasonics (very good), but now only Samsung (still good) and LG (meh). Sorry for not reading the whole thread, maybe someone already pointed out the oddities.

Sorry for not reading the whole thread, maybe someone already pointed out the oddities. You are right. Writing "I agree. Plasma TVs are a terrible choice in 2013 " and even adding that " " at the end was a terrible, terrible, terrible mistake. Although I enjoy my brand new 50" LED HDTV I got from Walmart and how that whole capitalism thing helped me purchase it for only $399, let us not forget Plasma is still King in 2014. It was obviously clear that Venezuelan who wanted a Sony Plasma TV, in 2014 no less, was retarded. I mean come on! Everybody knows Sony stopped making Plasma TV years ago... Even though Plasma TVs are still the BEST in Image quality. Too bad for Sony. Their lost! Stupid! Thank you for your important input regarding that crucial Venezuelan point, above and beyond basic stuff like higher food price and a crash and burn economy...

Price control, if set too low, will cause shortage; if set too high, will cause over stock.
Reason why government should leave it up to market to self regulate non-essential items.

I'm pretty sure that this is staged by the enemies of the government. They are committing suicides or starving to drive the needs for coffins beyond the numbers the government planned for.
