In that case why are you telling people to change/adjust their timezone?

The only thing they need to be doing is making sure their UTC time is correct.

No. My current time is 17:30 in UTC+3 timezone. I could set the timezone to UTC+2 keeping my current time 17:30. In this case my blocks/transactions will have timestamp shifted by 1 hour to the future.

A little bit confused:( here is my situation:

Chrome tab with blockchainexplorer:

42716   5848194006771653811    16.01.2014 15:12:50    6    105.99    6    0   14571285356259793594

Another chrome tab in client:

42716      14571285356259793594      1/16/2014 4:12:50 PM
6      0 + 6      1'326 B
2      5848194006771653811      106 %

So difference on the same PC is 1 hour. And I never forge a block, just always receive generating block errors. Is it like should be or it can be, that there some kind of bug regarding time zones?

Within a month, client software will be ready, large scale marketing will require some time. If there was a marketing budget, better plans could be made as to how to allocate it. I think most all agree that NXT needs some significant increase in the number of NXT users. This requires marketing and sales. With user friendly clients, we can go to the mass market.

The first question is how much to allocate to marketing. Once we know this, we can work to allocate to the different marketing programs. I strongly believe in pay for performance marketing. A website nobody goes to has little value, even if it has a lot of good info. A confusing badly made website, still has value if it brings in NXT'ers.

We define a performance metric for marketing. We set a NXT value to that. We roll out massive pay for performance marketing plan. 100 BTC worth of pay for performance marketing is possible. That would make it the largest ever and become news worthy in and of itself.

James

Ok. Do it.

You shouldn't give encourage behaviors if they work under the assumption that they will be paid by the common pool of NXT, imho. This should be clear that CFB does not make spending decisions.

Changing your "timezone" does not "change the time" (the UTC time remains identical) so what are you talking about?

There's definitely some issue with the current implementation.

It shouldn't depend on timezone because it uses System.getTimeInMillis(), but still I had a problem with my server.
It had a correct time and timezone -8 hours and I couldn't send a single NXT out of it.

I had to change timezone to UTC, then tweak the time until getState API returned the same timestamp as my PC and disable time sync on the server.

I tried to figure out what's wrong, but my java is too rusty and the problem was fixed, so I abandoned it.

Still, I think it's worth looking into.

EDIT:
Forgot to mention that though my server's local time was correct (UTC - 8 hours), as timezone of -8 specified, the NRS timestamp was 8 hours in the future.

Ripple was featured on top TV show: https://xrptalk.org/topic/949-ripple-debuts-on-%E2%80%9Ctv%E2%80%99s-no-1-new-show%E2%80%9D-%E2%80%93-nbc%E2%80%99s-the-blacklist/

2Kewl4Skewl has ripplegiveaway.com which is ripple faucet. Peercover supports NXT within ripple. Why not fund ripple NXT faucet? 50K NXT would get a lot of new exposure to people who are already in very similar demographic.

James

Why not? Create a poll.

Pin, can you create a poll for this? Also one for Marketing budget

James

As a community we need to decide on the allocation of the 9 million NXT. We need marketing, we also need more dev and probably more servers at some point. At this point, NXT has a lot more tech than marketing, so I would recommend not skimping on the marketing budget, especially if we can get a pay for performance plan worked out. I have some ideas on this already.

Maybe something like 4 million NXT budget to be allocated to PR, affiliate, etc.
3 million NXT for more dev, allocated to different areas of desired development
2 million NXT held in reserve for special items, community will know when a special item needs funding

Once we get high level budgets, then each budget gets allocated recursively until we have specific bounties for specific tasks. Each category should have some small but trusted group to evaluate and award bounties within the overall budgets

James

P.S. If there are any founders that would like to add to the overall 9 million, it will certainly help

There's definitely some issue with the current implementation.

I think you might be correct - UTC never changes (and if you are using nntp then your UTC should be fine).

The problem should never occur by changing your timezone and/or whether it uses DST - the only real problem should occur if you aren't using nntp and/or actually change the time.

I disagree. If u don't change time but do change timezone, then ur UTC time is changed.

No it isn't - seems to me you don't understand the difference between UTC time and a local timezone (hint UTC has nothing to do with a timezone - that's why it is called UTC).

Q: My timezone is UTC+3, local time is 17:30. What is Unix time?
A: 14:30, right?

Now I double-click clock in bottom left corner of my desktop and set timezone to UTC+2. My current time magically changed to 16:30, so I set it back to 17:30.

Q: So, my timezone is UTC+2, local time is 17:30. What is Unix time?
A: 15:30, right?

Ok. Do it.

I assume you mean define a performance metric and not that you agree to funding 5 million NXT

As for a performance metric, what if it was simply that a new person is someone that purchases $25 worth of NXT or more, with a personally identifiable means, eg. credit card. A $10 worth of NXT bounty is 40%, which is generous, but not crazy since it would be paid only for verified $25 purchases.

So you changed the time?

(the time didn't "magically change" it's just your local time that changed to reflect your change of timezone - if you're using nntp you should *never* change the time only the timezone/DST setting)

CFB: Would it make sense to make a kind of funding committee? To think about which kind of investments make sense and in which projects the money will go in? Yes, this is somehow centralized, but I guess it would help more to make just “decisions by the community” what could be just the loudest guys in Bitcoinkalk.

Good idea.

Any news regarding Nxt crypto-algo audit?

I just emailed Ittay to ask him if he thought he would be able to do it or not:

Pin the pollster is away. So I make this poll for anyone who care about the funding issue. Go there to vote and let your opinion know.

I did change the time.

Actually that wasn't me, other guys. There were 2-3 cases when setting correct timezone fixed incorrect timestamp issue.

And *that* is the problem - (not the timezone) - so lesson is simple:

1) Set your timezone to UTC and make sure the time is correct (according to nntp)

2) Change your timezone (and if you like set it to use DST) but *do not change the time* after doing so.

You should now have both correct UTC and local times.

OK, I live in Lithuania, which is UTC+2. In blockchainexplorer block has timestamp of UTC+1. So here is a difference in 1 hour between blockchainexplorer timestamp and my client time.

I made a mistake and have corrected my post... 87.230.14.1 is in Netherlands. It doesn't matter if you have a different time than the one listed on the Block Explorer... just choose UTC+2 and sync the time.

So you want to say, that difference in 1 hour what i see in my two chrome windows (the same block number in block explorer comparing with my client window) is normal and errors in forging a block doesn't related?
