What measures are in place to prevent similar coin spamming as is currently happening to Litecoin?

I think he means spamming the block chain with thousands of tiny (in coin value) transactions to bloat it (and cause other problems that come as side effects).

The main problem is causing the block chain to grow a lot larger than it should be.

What does bitcoin do about it? As devcoin has basically the same fee structure as bitcoin, multiplied by a thousand since devcoin generates a thousand times as many coins as bitcoin does. Has bitcoin been experiencing the problem? Has devcoin? (I have not noticed such a problem in bitcoin or in devcoin.)

Okay, Unthinkingbit has come up with a fix: basic transaction fee is now ten times as high as it was, plus also any multi-part transactions always incur a small fee per part. I have uploaded new source to the sourceforge site.

Cablepair has been awarded the bounty for adding advertising to the devtome wiki:
http://www.devtome.org/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page

Cablepair wanted the 4 share or 40 BTC bounty in bitcoins, so I sent him 40 BTC:
154799 - 40 BTC - http://abe.john-edwin-tobey.org/tx/5ac573214d62f693b62cb1eeeb479db577532ac32b064e5ff73ef2e090b636ef

and provisionally I will in turn get another four extra generation shares in round 6, for a total of eight.  If anyone wants up to eight extra shares, I will trade them at 10 BTC/share, until block 20,500.  The round 6 receiver file will be made at around block 21,000.

To encourage people to start porting their articles to devtome:
http://www.devtome.org/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page

or writing new articles, there is now a first article bounty of 5 million devcoins for the first five writers, 4 million for the next five, then 3 million, then 2 million, and finally 1 million for the last five.  This is to get devtome started and to encourage people who aren't used to generation shares.  I'll award the bounties from my coins, when the cumulative payout rises above a generation share, I'll reimburse myself by going on the bounty list for that round.

Now anyone can earn coins, whatever they like writing about, wherever in the world they are.  At the time of this writing, the last trade at:
https://vircurex.com/

is 900,000 DVC/BTC.  So the 5 million bounty is worth roughly six bitcoins.  The generation share is typically around 5 million, so a writer will keep getting roughly six bitcoins per month for writing.  Although this is not much, it is more than writers can get for porting over their own work anywhere else, and the income is ongoing, there is no worry about layoffs or contracts running out.  In time, as devtome gets bigger the devcoin value should rise.

The article, or articles, must have total length of at least a thousand words.  If you base your work off a wikipedia article, then the new part, or parts, must have a total length of at least a thousand words.

If a writer writes for at least two months and intends to continue, they can apply to be inducted.  If their work has been of good quality and they work well with others, they'll become a devcoin administrator, which get another generation share for their administrative work.

The idea behind devtome is that the generation shares pay people to write for the wiki, the advertising revenue from the wiki purchases devcoins on an exchange which causes the value of devcoin to rise, which means more money for writers, and so on.  Because ad rates are low, it will take at least a few months for the advertising revenue to be significant, but you have to start somewhere.

I now have a DVC<->BTC (and vice-versa) exchange set up, in the form of an Open Transactions server that has currency contracts for DigiBTC and DigiDVC tokens and issuing accounts to issue such tokens.

I have only issued 100 DigiBTC and 10,000,000 DigiDVC so far even though I actually have more than 100 BTC to back the DigiBTC with and far far more than 10,000,000 DVC to back the DigiDVC with.

I figure by never issuing more DigiDVC than there are securely checkpointed actual DVC as reserves, even if people manage to mess with the DVC blockchain the tokens should be fine, as we can be pretty confident we can save/restore the reserves.

So trading the tokens might be more secure than trading the underlying actual coins on the blockchain. Smiley

Read about the exchange aka OT-server in its own thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=53329.0

Maintenance shares have been added for maintaining devcoin services which don't get fees.  This includes block explorers with 2/5 of a share and permanent nodes with 1/5 of a share.  The maintenance share will get paid each round as long as the service is working.

Edit: As of Aug 2012, there are enough permanent nodes, so there will not be bounties for any new permanent nodes.

Shattienator gets 1/5 share for the permanent node:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=34586.msg437059#msg437059

and 2/5 for a block explorer:
http://devcoinblockexplorer.info:2750

or

http://107.20.193.62:2750

For a total of 3/5 of a generation share.

Cablepair gets 2/5 of a generation share for a devcoin block explorer:
http://explorer.devcoin.org

Edit: Shattienator and Cablepair both stopped maintaining their block explorers, so their maintenance shares are suspended until they bring their explorers back up. So Cablepair currently gets 0, and Shattienator gets a total of 1/5. The working block explorers are listed at:
http://devtome.com/doku.php?id=devcoin_block_explorer

'Earn Devcoins by Writing' has been updated.  The updated post follows below.

Open source articles are wanted for devtome, the open source wiki about anything:
http://www.devtome.org/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page

==Requirements==
There are no notability requirements for the wiki, only the usual no malware, porn or scammy stuff.  All contributions to devtome are considered to be released under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License (wikipedia license).  You can port your articles to devtome, for example articles from your own website or blog, you just have to show that you have the rights to whatever you're contributing.  If you base on article on a wikipedia article, you must make significant changes and add an attribution section.

==Application==
At first, anyone can register for the wiki, and if someone adds scammy stuff they'll be booted off.  Eventually as the wiki becomes more popular, scammers will purposely target it, so to stop scammers new writers will have to send a message with their first article to register.

==Signing Bonus==
There is a first article bounty of 5 BTC (or 5 million devcoins or one generation share, whichever you prefer) for the first five writers, 4 BTC (or 4 million devcoins or 4/5 of a generation share) for the next five, then 3 BTC (or 3 million devcoins or 3/5 of a generation share), then 2 BTC (or 2 million devcoins or 2/5 of a generation share), and finally 1 BTC (or 1 million devcoins or 1/5 of a generation share) for the last five.  The article, or articles, must have total length of at least a thousand words.  If you base your work off a wikipedia article, then the new part, or parts, must have a total length of at least a thousand words.

==Income==
===Monthly===
If you write enough for the signing bonus each month, you get a generation share every month, roughly five million devcoins.  Now anyone can make coin, whatever they like writing about, wherever in the world they are.  At the time of this writing, December 2, the last trade at:
https://vircurex.com/

is 900,000 DVC/BTC.  So 5 million devcoins is worth roughly five bitcoins.  The generation share is typically around 5 million, so you'll keep getting roughly five bitcoins per month for writing.  Although this is not much, it is more than writers can get for porting over their own work anywhere else, and the income is ongoing, there is no worry about layoffs or contracts running out.  In time, as devtome gets bigger the devcoin value should rise.

===Word Bonus===
Every six months, starting in April 2012, writers can apply for the word bonus.  Only original work qualifies for this bonus.  The original work can be from your website, it can not be based off a wikipedia article or another article.  To get this bonus, you have to list your original articles, then administrators will look them over to see that they are original work.  If they are original, you'll get a bonus generation share per two thousand words.  The equation is:

bonus generation shares = round(total word count / 2,000)

===Administrative===
If you write for at least two months and intend to continue, you can apply to be inducted.  If your work has been of good quality and you work well with others, you can be a devcoin administrator, and get another generation share for administrative work.

===Advertising Revenue===
The advertising revenue will be converted to devcoins through an exchange.  The devcoins will then be handed out in the same proportion as the generation shares.

==Finance==
The idea behind devtome is that the generation shares pay people to write for the wiki, the advertising revenue from the wiki purchases devcoins on an exchange which causes the value of devcoin to rise, which means more money for writers, and so on.  Because advertising rates are low, it will take at least a few months for the advertising revenue to be significant, but you have to start somewhere.

==Root Article==
The root article is at:

On a not so happy note

My pool malfunctioned and some dishonest person withdrew over 6 million DVC and most if it did not belong to that person.

I have not gotten a chance to go through the database yet and figure out who it is

but this is the transaction
http://64.244.102.88:2750/tx/1d59c1872f8fb8a3aab0c26afb85afd71252133880c61af97fb3a1b2a20fb18e#o1

and this is your devcoin address
13HLsSNQ9K8ffgXr8m9bSK6tJhuBXmJZ5u

please send at least 5 million DVC back before I expose you on the forums as a theif.

that 5 million DVC was my bounty from the OP of this thread for writing an article on the wiki, and I am not very happy that someone stole it.

Just because my pool screwed up and allowed you to do this does not mean it is right

so I am giving you a chance to set it right

SEND THE 5 MILLION DVC BACK TO THIS ADDRESS
1FoanmiQmVQZsXHPD3qdQDu4erWzYvE7Bo

thank you.

No need to "expose me" because I will work with you to clear this up.  I've been mining with 300-700 mhash for 2 weeks now.  I'm pretty sure I earned that many.

Let me know what went wrong and why I didn't earn that many.  I've been getting about half a million a day, so I thought it was reasonable to think I had accumulated 6 million over the course of almost two weeks.

I need to go somewhere, but will be back online in about 8 hours.

You can settle down, figure out the issue and let me knwo how many I should of had.

I'm pretty sure I was the only one mining in the pool some of the days in the past week... and I've been seeing the pool fees coming out of the mining generations, so I thought everything was fine.

Sorry for the misunderstanding.

This kind of thing is why bitcoin and all its derivatives need the ability to run more than one daemon on the same blockchain with different wallets or the ability in the daemon to speficy which PRC login/password pairs are to be permitted to do what with which "account".

You should have been able to run the pool as a totally different user from you, with no access to your wallet.

But having umpteen users each with an entire copy of the blackchain of each type of coin that user wants to play with is silly.

your right, I should of had a separate wallet than the pool, It's just laziness I guess, there are only like 3 or 4 miners who use the pool , its not like its a million users, It's my fault the pool allowed someone to do this, it just sucks that someone did.

My wife had a baby yesterday morning, so I have been very busy enjoying life lately, I will be fixing the pool soon, and making sure everyone gets the proper rewards. Not sure where things screwed up, the rewards were correct for awhile. Still gotta check that out.

btw: I am quite sure the thief already cashed in the DVC, that is likely why the value on the exchange is so low now so you can thank him for that as well.

I know exactly who the person is now, lets see if he does the right thing. If not I will bring the accusations public on the forum, I am willing to handle this with discretion but I also expect to be paid back as well.

Pool has started to behave "strange" some 4 days ago. I already sent info-mail about this some 2 days ago (to email tom@devcoin.org). Unconfirmed balance is still raising, it does't become confirmed after apropriete amount of following blocks. Confirmed balance is raising about 10 times faster. Withdraw function finishes with "bitcoind error - contact admin" error. I created new account to test if problem isn't only with my old account. Uncorfimed balance is raising properly. So far i don't know if  confirmed balance works well (mined only few block with new account).

I apologize to all the honest members of the pool and trust me you will all get paid what you have coming too you.

This certain individual was mining with us for 1 week, and all of the sudden he has 6.2 million DVC in his account and decides to not only withdraw it but cash it all in on the exchange and basically destroy the value of Devcoin for what ? 6 BTC ?

He is a dishonest and reckless person, and I apologize to everyone for the pools behavior I will have it fixed very soon, this probably never would of happened except for the fact that my wife went into labor on friday and we had a baby girl so I have been enjoying real life and not had a chance to deal with this stuff, thank you to everyone for your patience I will try to get this all sorted out tomorrow.
