At some point, I exposed my Ledger Nano with my BTC on it, to each of their Electrum Wallets.

Last night, my wallet was emptied of ALL my BTC, 13+ coins.

So how exactly did this happen?

I believe the point of compromise happened at one of two places.

1. Using the Ledger to connect to the one of the two BTCP/BTCD Electrum Wallets. The BTCP has an app on the Ledger. The BTCD does not.

2. I don’t recall doing this for my BTC seeds but I might have input them in my hand into the BTCP/BTCD wallets.
That would mean a keylogger has compromised my setup. I’m not normally adventurous in downloading foreign software, generally, aside from rogue Bitcoin wallets (heh...).

So I’m not blaming the BTCP or BTCD Electrum wallets outright as it could have been me inputting my BTC seeds. I don’t recall doing that with my BTC seeds but Indo remember doing that with the old seeds that’s had the BTC already moved.

If anyone is familiar with the BTCP Electrum wallet off Github, that’s where I got it. I’ll have to confirm but I believe I also got the BTCD from there.  I’m sorry if this is unclear. My head is spinning and I’m not sure on where I was compromised.

It is a really devastating thread and I have read it with sinking heart. I too was extracting BCH and BTG from the BTC wallets and just thinking how easy it is to fall a victim if one is not very very cautious and thinking and rethinking what one does before actually doing it, well, it makes me sick.

Probably you will not retrieve those founds and they are lost for you, but I hope that story will be a cold shower for some fork enthusiasts and will save somebody from doing those mistakes again. Thanks for sharing.

That was too sad that you've lost 13 BTC? wow!! That's a too big amount of yours and now you've just lost it.  It's too hard to move on on that amount because that is a too huge amount for me. You can already make your own business in that amount but someone stole your own money with your own wallet. WOW! Maybe you have a friend that knows your private password or private keys and get all your BTC in your wallet.

Lol yeah if you feel bad about it, and you probably should be because that amount in btc by far is not a laughing matter, there are people who've lost way more in the past. I don't think there's a way to retrieve those so take it a life lesson. Just don't let that discourage you in getting into bitcoin since you can very well earn that again.

do you keep it in 1 same purse? it should be the worst you have anticipated by dividing your assets on some wallets or exchange, or you sell some of your bitcoin on fiat money and keep it in your account, I'm more secure

Wow thats horrible. That is the nightmare scenario for any crypto user...make a mistake and get hacked and lose all your money. Sorry it happened to the OP.

I wouldn't even bother with all these forks for a while. They aren't worth much and if you have your coins in long term storage there's no reason to bother with that small extra amount of money. May as well keep them and when at some later time you are moving your coins to sell them then bother with trying to get the forks.

How could this be prevented?

It seems like his problem was he didn't move his BTC first right? If he had moved his Bitcoin to a different wallet first, then he could have safely used the private key on the previous wallet to get the forked coins since that BTC wallet would be empty at that point. Is my logic correct on that?
