If you donate 10 BTC (which pays for about a month of hosting), you get donator status:
I'd love to be able to donate 10 BTC, but if that's what hosting costs each month, I could probably do more good by helping you find better hosting? Lol. Looking at BTC value back on 8/19/2011... has the site considered a membership plan of some sort? Monthly or annual, with some type of benefits? Maybe even multiple levels? Something that would remain fair to those that donated long ago and even any that are able to donate those amounts now/in the future. I am positive the community would support this site through donations. I certainly will, without any "donator status" or benefits. But it's doubtful I could swing 10 or 50 BTC anytime soon. Bitcointalk doesn't rely on donations anymore, the ads revenue are sufficient tho but any donations will be welcome. The donator/vip status have some privilege which is mainly changing the name and accessing a hidden subforum. For the price of these status, nowadays they are overestimated but for people who believe that 1 BTC in 2011 = 1 BTC in 2017 it is the same. Well mathematically indeed but a land or a house built in 1900 will not have the same price as in 2000.

Have you guys thought about reducing the donations for VIP/Donator ranks. 10 BTC and 50 seems like a bit too much. Would be a small fortune lol

It's been discussed time after time and the answer to the question is no it's not going to be reduced to equivalent modern day prices as it would be unfair for those that have donated. theymos has also said that the forum doesn't really need the funds to justify lowering it either.

i just love this, man 50 btc at more or less 7000us$ per bitcoin, is 350000us$ for a forum badge...A FORUM BADGE
never fails to make me smirk, it's amazing, honestly. it's even more cool that many of the donators/vip weren't rich at the very beggining, they just came to the party early, and if i were those guys, man, i probably would've donated too, this community is worth some appreciation...well, maybe not 350000us$ worth of appreciation but definetely something in that range lol

I read the earlier posts and disagree with any notion that 10BTC and 50BTC donations can be justified. Where exactly are all these donations going? I mean how much of the BTC donated to the forum is needed for hosting? Unless the moderators take some of the donations for salary and/or expenses it means there should be no other expenses. 1x BTC at todays rate of $7000+ would easily cover more than 1 years hosting. Have any of the moderators actually filed any tax returns for any money received? Where are the donations going and what are those in receipt of them actually doing with them?

The justification is that it would be unfair to the original donators to change the rates now. Next to nobody is donating anything to the forum anymore anyway, though I think one or two people have (bizzarely) done so over the past few years. The forum is self-sufficient via ad revenue and that is what moderators are paid out of. Donations have never been used for that and the money that was donated has/is being used for development of a new forum. Staff are responsible for paying their own taxes, though there are a few staff who theymos pays taxes to the US IRS on their behalf.

$70k USD would cover several years hosting Bitcoin hasn't always had a price this high. When the majority of these donations were made Bitcoin was very far below $100. Where do the donations actually go??
Donations have never been used for that and the money that was donated has/is being used for development of a new forum.

How do you work that out? As explained above, donations are not used to pay staff and next to nobody is donating. Staff are paid exclusively out of advertisement revenue and donations continue to be used in development of the new forum software.

I am really glad I found this thread. It's great to see how many people have donated over the years and I hope their BTC was used well. I hope this forum will be around for many more years to come.

How can revenue and donations continue to be used in development of the new forum software? The forum software is FREE open source!! The version used by this forum (SMF 1.1.19) has not been updated here for years even though plenty of free updates and versions have been released: http://www.simplemachines.org/I do not accept that the "bitcoin donations are going towards development of the forum" when the forum is downloaded for free yet the people running this forum are not updating it. There should be clarity about where the donations are going and who is using the donations and for what purpose.

You just said development of the NEW forums and then you are talking about the actual forum! And by the way for your information, the forum is using actually the ads revenue since barely no one is making donations since the Bitcoin price increased so much. Take a look here https://beta.bitcointalk.org/boards

You know, the one with an entire sub forum in Meta dedicated to its development: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=167.0This one isn't been updated for this exact reason. No point wasting time on it. When the software will actually be ready or not is another matter but this is the latest info I could find: Will the new forum be released in the year 2018? http://epochtalk.org/Those who know (Slickage team members), one of the following answers (if possible) would be highly appreciated. No Yes It's planned It's not planned Thank you so much and keep up the nice work All of the above! (jk) Planned for release before the end of the year and finishing migration in 2018. This stuff is incredibly sensitive because we don't have access to the full database and we're migrating data based on a running system. If you have any issues on the development. Please submit something here or on Github. Thanks for the nice words!
