[...]
a 300w (max) gpu is a perfect fit for a 3 gpu rig config..like a 900w for 3x card plus system power consumption......a perfect fit for a 1200w psu (1200w is a sweet spot for power-price-density-power efficiency ratio)

Exactly! Three cards, one motherboard, one psu, no crappy risers. Powerful and fail proof setup.

i use risers, boards that can handle those  3 to 4 gpus are too expensive or rare etc..

3 risers will be a lot easier to troubleshoot than finding the bad riser in a 8 card riser rig..shuffling by trial and error, testing your spares phew! haha

no the 8 slot boards using 4 cards  never break  and just run with the four cards doing 200 watts each the whole setup pulls

900 watts against the cheap good deal priced corsair 1500 watts atx psu.

My up time has been 99% since sept 2017

with zero psu or gpu  or board fails.

i was referring to risers not board hehe...anyway that is a one fine setup and to add to that if a socket got problematic you still have 4 more available.

Generally those gamer type motherboards which allow triple SLI ( or triple crossfire) are very expensive and you need a huge tower case if you want it to be enclosed.

Reason why is because the last GPU will need to go in the last slot and that is usually where the PSU sits (newer cases have PSUs sitting at the bottom not top like the 90s)

Its basically cheaper to just buy a regular motherboard, use risers and just buy a server chassis and you can easily run 5 or 6 GPUs without issue.

They are barely profitable before electricity. Had one of my rigs with 3 vegas mining for a few days but they had a lousy hash rate in comparison to the nvidia cards. My 3 vegas did around 9 gps total consuming around 530 at the wall. Not sure if they will get improved upon later on with better mining programs, or if amd cards just suck at that algorithm.

server chassis or any case...nope, just zip tie those cards in the rack and you have all the space you want to be able to put your two hands where you need it when troubleshooting or maintaining.

i dunno. i had gpus on risers zip tied in the air and found it more of a pita then i thought it would be. maybe it was just me as i was slowly rotating out my 380/390s and replaced them with whatever as i went at that time, and zip ties and risers sure made that The Suck in my book.

once the 8 slot onda d8p came out i bought one from phil and never looked back. no risers, nothing loose, easy gpu changes, take the whole rig outside as a unit to blow dust out etc. super neat and absolutely no problems since i set it up.

no risers=less to go wrong imo.

I hate those damn risers. I just threw away 4 of'em. The GPUs started failing or throwing up error 43's in the device manager. In the end it was a combo of bad board and bad risers.

At least now, if I get this type of errors I know to isolate the gpu, and change the riser as a first instance.

We have been mining Beam on Sparkpool and overall it's been a positive experience.  They have translated allot of the site now, so you don't have to rely on Google Translate like it was at first (that was a very "interesting" experience).

@ElderIII,

Can you mine to a BEAM exchange wallet (ex: BitForex) on Sparkpool?

What mining software have you found to be the best for BEAM?

Thx

I've had issues also with the USB Risers. They were also very difficult to diagnose which riser is good or which is bad without actually using it for  a while.

This is why some of my open air rigs still used the Ribbon risers from the Litecoin days. You could visually inspect them for fault and as long as it was 16x - 1x riser it was pretty flexable and you could put them almost anywhere.

However you couldn't use all ribbon risers on a 6 GPU rig, basically the first and last GPU on the rack wouldn't have enough length and you had to use the USB risers for those.

"using it for a while" you say?.....that's why my next plan is build a mining rig composed of old gpus 280x or maybe 290s--->like a testing rig.

that will be 100% sure that its running PSU, motherboard/cpu/ram/hdd and risers(including usb cable) are problem free, i will put any suspicious riser, gpu, psu etc.. to work there, see if something shakes off.

Guys how much are you doing with a Vega64 on Grin?

I'm about 0,42 gps on Grin-31 / Vega64 at about 200W.

That's pretty much where you should be, upper end even. What miner are you using? I suppose it's the Minerbabe distro... I've been using it too and it was pretty stable. The only problem is that its web management platform is grossly unpolished and lacks a lot of features.

Gminer is the best for Nvidia, lolminer is the best for AMD in my experience.  I think you can mine straight to an exchange, but you would still have to manually withdraw from the exchange once per day.  Unless they added a new exchange in the last couple of days I wouldn't trust any of them to hold my coins.  I would rather use the Beam wallet personally.

I am not too technical on the details but what is the deal exactly with ProgPOW? It seems that it will level the field with ASICs and GPUs however the brand of GPU seems to play a factor.

It seems that Nvidia performs much better than AMD, and is the reason for this that Nvidia generally costs more and since it costs more they want to make it more fair in that regards.

For example, say you can buy 2 AMDs for the price of 1 Nvidia. The 1 Nvidia will perform at the exact same speed as the 2 AMDs combined. Is this the point they are going for or is it just the way that the current miners are optimized?

AMD GPUs consume a lot more power for the same hashrate on compute heavy algos.

I cannot believe that you are still mining this BCI shit.
I know you are mining Grin as well, but ffs brother, if you want more BCI, then buy some.
BCI is nowhere to be found on mining profitability lists.

It is what the current miners are optimized in.
One year ago, AMD was ahead of NVDIA on the GPU race.
Now things have shifted a bit towards NVDIA favor. Their difference in performance is roughly 1/3 regardless of the coin.
New AMD 16 GB is out. Wink

No, mining currently has no effect on video card prices. That was like 6-18 months ago. Their prices today has more to do with gaming. With that said Nvidia cards do beat out AMD when it comes to algorithms like progpow and mimblewimble. I think the only algorithms where AMD flat out beats NVIDIA are all the cryptonight variants.

Anyways its very cheap now if you want to get into mining, but of course, thats because there's no money to be made. The used market is flooded with people selling their mining equipment. And if you buy new you could probably get some good deals.

With that said, spend at your own risk. Crypto doesn't look like it will be going up anytime soon. I'm still here since mining heats up the house pretty nicely during the winter. But once it hits April or May I will have to downsize the farm quite a bit.

this is the key for mining.  How much power cost is.

Was not true in December 2017  key was how much gear you could run .

In the garage
I have :
1 apollo =130 watts
some sidehack usb sticks = 30 watts
some moonlander sticks = 100 watts
4 vegas = 800
1 rx 580 =140
2 rtx 2070 = 140
1 threadripper = 90
2x ryzen 2700's = 140

total 1570 watts  lets bump to  1600  or 1.6 x 24 x 31 = 1190 kwatts  lets bump to 1200 kwatts x 13 cents = 156 in power

heat is worth 20 percent so 31 off I spend 125 in power in my home.
I have 3 s-9s  hosted for a total of 130  a month

so fiat cost in power for paid off gear = 225  the 3 s-9's earn 185  so net loss would be 40 a month if  the bci and the ltc/doge and the grin  were zero.

I mostly mine bci  in the garage say 150 a month at 20 cents = 30

so -40 + 30  = -10

the grin is 6 a week = +24 so +14

the usb sticks are solo pools
the apollo is solo pool  in 15 months I hit a block of doge which is a dollar a month.  so my garage mining makes  about 15 a month.

but the solar deals  are 12 1080ti's  at zero fiat ½ coins  so that is 450 bci  and 16 grin monthly  of which  ½ are mine

so 450 x 20 cent = 90 for the bci
16 x 5bucks = 80 for the grin

I net 170  ½ is mine = 85 a month  so 85 + 15 = 100 a month

That does not count the :

530th BTC
7gh    LTC

Solar project in Clifton

that is ½ coins  for the warehouse owner  ½ coins to be split with buysolar and I

so I have  530/2 = 265/2 = 132 th free btc mining   about 600 usd a month
I have        7/2  =  3.5/2 =  1.75 gh free  ltc mining about 250 usd a month

thats  850 monthly profit

So I am 950  a month round down for travel  to clifton  I am 900  a month

I cash some btc and some ltc
I hodl BCI
I hodl GRIN

I could do this  for a long time  and mostly break even on fiat while gaining  coins.

1 bull run and nice score
Stays the same for a year  I would coin  900 x 12 = 10800 of which  I would keep  5000 of that in coin and cash 5800 out in profit.

So I have a plan for all of 2019.

I also  take the 10,800 number and I round down to 8,000  of which I would pull 5,000 cash and keep 3,000 coin.

Thats worse case.  Since I am hodling all the bci and the grin if they drop 8000 is more realistic

If either BCI or GRIN take off  I am golden.

All of the above represents gear paid off from profits in 2017
BTW  2017  profits are not all gone,  but I Have reached the point of  no more expansion  from now till July.
