"Soon" would be in the next 1-3 years or so.

One of the biggest dangers for BTC is something more useful coming along and investors switching - a process which could happen extremely fast, once started.

So to all the tech savy people in here - what advantages could other cryptocurrencies bring that will give them a crucial edge over BTC, and how fast could something like that come along?
There are several different types of Bitcoin clients. The most secure are full nodes like Bitcoin Core, which will follow the rules of the network no matter what miners do. Even if every miner decided to create 1000 bitcoins per block, full nodes would stick to the rules and reject those blocks.

You mean like zerocoin? ;-)

However, this isn't a zero sum game. More than one coin can compete.

It's like having more than one currency!

Only as long as the coins bring similiar advantages for the users, like BTC and LTC. No huge differences there, so I can definitely see 2 to say,5 crytos co-exist there.

But imagine something came along that blew BTC out of the water - some coin with all the advantages of BTC, but much more improved than BTC! That would be a completely different ballgame game there.

No only stalking. Mining is stalking.

And the blockchain are the official police reports.

Sounds like a fun coin.

Bitcoin may not be perfect but it's good enough. Something would have to go very wrong for Bitcoin to be anything other than the main player.

To replace bitcoin it needs alot. But indeed, Zerocoin could get number 2 or 3.

Bitcoin was first to market. It will take something to go seriously wrong with it for another coin to take number one spot.

Facebook, Google and so on are your examples.
It won't get replaced.

P.S. NXT sucks.

I'm not implying something goes wrong with BTC. I'm implying something better than BTC comes along.

Anybody who wants to elaborate on that from a technical point of view?

I'm implying that bitcoin ticks all the technical boxes. Any rough edges will be ironed out with future software upgrades.

People who make the Myspace/ Facebook comparison are a little off the mark. They're just free platforms that people can jump between on a whim.

Large amounts of money have already been put into Bitcoin and that's only going to become larger. That makes people more conservative.

I could see Bitcoin being overtaken while it's still a minnow but 2014 might be the start of it becoming a force. My guess is that for it to happen it would need to be sooner rather than later and there's nothing on the horizon yet.
