We're rapidly approaching a time when the average person will have absolutely no comprehension on the difference between there, their and they're, its and it's, to, two and too, which and witch, accept and except, affect and effect, a lot and allot, bear and bare, illicit and elicit, let and let's, (and hundreds of others) nor care two hoots about any of it either. Pretty sad.

Since the subject finally came up, I just wanted to take the opportunity to quickly (and as inoffensively as possible) get this off my chest:

You don't "loose" money.

You "lose" money and "loose" an arrow (as in, "let loose").   Just reminding those around here with otherwise perfect English that this sticks out like a sore thumb because the rest of your text is so awesome.

That's all I'm going to say about this, though.

Given DASH's bright future, I'm sure nobody in this community will ever have to worry about this particular word again anyway.  Grin

You're just too lose with your opinion Bridgewater. You need to loose this attitude!

I still like the name darkcoin more, i think it is the perfect name, and i do not like dash. Should focus more on the tech as oposed to PR as well IMHO.
I can understand that, however, Darkcoin is no longer just focussed on "being dark"; there's so much more to it and adoption with the name "Darkcoin" will be but a drop in the ocean compared to the whole ocean if it's given a new, far more acceptable and valid name.
I just do not think we necessarelly have to do what is considered "valid" and "acceptable". Since if Satoshi Nakamoto himself though that way, Bitcoin itself would most likely not have been invented in the first place. There is nothing ethically wrong with the name Darkcoin and it is the name that definitely does embody and best symbolizes the cryptocurrency movement, and its spirit, certainly much better then DASH or DC does IMHO, both in the literal and poetic sense. So if the only reason for doing this change is so that Darkcoin can be considered a more "valid" and "acceptable" currency then i would not consider that a good reason for the change.

It's not so much about "validity" and being careful not to rock the boat and upset people (or anything around diplomatic catering to people's sensitivities), it's about whether we want to even get to first base in conversations with people in 99% of cases. If you read back over the past pages since this was announced you'll see many many people breathing a collective sigh of relief because they couldn't get past 10 seconds of conversation in trying to introduce someone to Darkcoin without the person recoiling with (almost) horror that someone would consider being involved with it.

Darkcoin is a name that's just fine here in crypto circles but that's where it stops. Outside of this tiny tiny little realm that's so insignificant "Darkcoin" means illegal nefarious bad criminal.

It will only ever be a tiny niche currency that will only appeal to a tiny subset of Bitcoin users if it remains as Darkcoin. What's been created here is absolutely way bigger and beyond that and we need to set it free from these constraints.

Propeller tech-heads are some of the last people in the world that will understand these sorts of concepts and we're getting a fair share of that type of thinking here being expressed.

I was totally against the name change at first. Qwizzie and wozzek actually spelled out some of the things I had already voiced in my head at the time, especially the point about compromising the ideals of community who is producing a tool to combat monetary tyranny.  However, after about 20 minutes of pacing the room with knitted brow and folded arms, I completely flip-flopped on the issue.  The name change may appear to be capitulation at first, but at this point in our crypto-evolution it is WAY more important to get people using DRK and having personal responsibility for their own money. The counter-culture libertarian guys who actively seek out anonymity tech will naturally read the fine print and carefully understand things anyway.  These are actually the people who we need to worry about LEAST, and their numbers pale in comparison to those of the bank-bound, follow-the-leader masses.

I see this as a chance to really distinguish ourselves as different from Bitcoin.  It is a fact--we are different. It is our entire raison d'etre! Are we simply trying to capture some of the current litecoin or other altcoin investors? No, and I don't think Evan's original intention ever was. His decision is perfectly in alignment with his long-term vision for the currency.

Branding wise, to compete against bitcoin we should not simply immitate it (even though the underlying code is similar).  I am confident that the Monero guys already had this conversation before.  MasterMined710 had a good example of asking people if they accept "Bitcoin or Darkcoin?"  Those seem like two of the same things, with the latter being just a "me-too" option.   Dropping the *coin is an excellent step forward.

Go back in time eight years and ask someone "Do you have a Gmail or Hotmail address?"  Now do the same thing again today... Oh yeah, you can't because only one of those big "~mail" brands survived.   Today we can instead ask "Do you have Gmail or Facebook?"  Here we have two totally different brands, both of which can serve a similar purpose of connecting people but go about it in different ways.

Instead of changing in the face of conservatism we should stand for our beliefs, so that it gives the world more of a chance to change.

I totally understand where you're coming from, as I had the exact same opinion at first.

But for a hypothetical perspective,  think of it as if early Internet pioneers who really understood their tech thought that only raw IP addresses should be used by all, because in their opinion, the world should think more in numbers and really understand the tech they are using.   Fortunately, we have DNS to translate those IP addresses into something most humans can easily understand.  And because of DNS, people can then go through and understand the IP if they really want to.  But without DNS, would the internet have ever gained mass adoption?  Did DNS change the underlying tech?  No, even numbers-averse people use the heck out of apple.com or newyorktimes.com, even though it is based on scary numbers.

And to reiterate my previous point,  you don't have to market to the libertarian privacy-oriented guys, because they ALREADY read the fine print and will find out the best tech, no matter what you call it. At the risk of being blunt, marketing is not aimed at smart, free-thinking individuals.  So relax and let both the marketing AND the tech innovations happen...  You're in good hands here.
