Yes it depends! And the price of bitcoin depends on the news but it is the strongest and for many years has won the trust of many investors. Undoubtedly bitcoin is the best investment.

I have notice that too ,whenever bitcoin drops in price all other altcoins will sink in price too and if Ethereum drops in price it affect the price of all erc20 tokens too ,I think its because they are both the top coins on the list and many tokens are running through Ethereum blockchain

Actually there is a new coin to factor in - Stablecoins, most especially Tether. The price movement of Tether also tells a story. When USDT dumps, money flow out of altcoins and when it rises, money flow in. It has narrow range though, around 98 cents to $1.10 USD/USDT pair.

I think the main reason is people are using Bitcoin and ethereum the most at the situation the value of their investment will reduced to unexpected value then people don't want to take the risk to invest and other underrated currency this will be the reason all cryptocurrency are falling down.
