Bank of Queensland Rules out Crypto Purchases Using Mortgage Equity

The Australian Financial Review has reported that the Bank of Queensland will prohibit its customers to use loan equity to purchase cryptocurrency.

The Bank of Queensland, one of Australia’s largest banks, which is publicly traded on the country’s stock exchange, has made the move as it believes recent crypto price instability has made amendments to its rules necessary. Other banks have discouraged its borrowers using real-estate mortgages for crypto purchases, but as yet haven’t officially prohibited the activity.

Quantum Tunneling May Deter Powerful Crypto Mining Chips

Moore’s law states that the number of transistors in an integrated circuit doubles about every two years, and this has approximately been true up until now. Transistors are the fundamental building blocks of electronic devices; they amplify and switch electronic signals on and off. More transistors on a chip results in more processing power. However, due to quantum tunneling, there is a limit on how small transistors can get, and this will make it very difficult to make cryptocurrency mining application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) chips more powerful than they already are.

SegWit Allowing for Bitcoin Blocks That Are Over 100% Bigger

BitMEX Research has found that the Bitcoin block size limit has increased by over 100% since the implementation of segregated witness (SegWit) in August 2017. Formerly there was a hard cap of 1 MB on block size, but since the launch of SegWit there are numerous blocks up to 1.5 MB in size and even some blocks in excess of 2 MB. This is positive for the Bitcoin network since it allows more transactions per block and decreases congestion in the mempool, leading to lower transaction fees. Lower Bitcoin transaction fees have a positive effect on the entire crypto economy.
