A new report out by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) illustrates the degree to which companies are now seeing blockchain as an essential business tool.

Blockfi Takes Crypto-Backed Lending to 44 US States with California Coup

Crypto-backed lending platform Blockfi has received a license to operate in California, which takes its spread of business into 44 US states.
The Californian license, on top of the those already held by the company, is an indication of a growing interest in crypto backed lending across the US. Another service, SALT, is currently providing its service in 35 states across the country, with Nexo as another major crypto loan facilitator.

South Korea Hosts Blockchain Awareness Hackathon

A government-backed hackathon has been announced in South Korea as part of the 2018 Blockchain Promotion Week.
As reported by local news outlet Money Today, the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA) and the Korea IT Industry Promotion Agency (KIPA) will be hosting a 2018 Blockchain Grand Challenge. Sponsoring the event is the South Korean Ministry of Science, Technology and Information.

Mining Hash Rate Spikes to Record High 62 Exahash/s

Bitcoin’s hash rate has spiked to a record high of 62 Exahash/s as of 26 August 2018, where an Exahash is equivalent to 1,000 Petahash, and a Petahash equals 1,000 Terahash. The previous record high was 54 Exahash/s on 10 August. This continues the long-term trend of Bitcoin’s hash rate exponentially increasing. To put this in perspective, up until the second half of 2013, hash rate was less than 100 Terahash/s.

India Considers Rupee-Backed Digital Currency to Combat Rising Fiat Cost

The Reserve Bank of India’s study to look at the feasibility of introducing a rupee-backed central bank digital currency was driven by the burden of current rising costs in printing paper fiat money.
The RBI suggests that there may be pressure put on other banks globally, particularly with the rise in interest in digital currencies for banking purposes. However, electronic fraud remains a concern, according to Financial Services company EY India. Company representative Manesh Makhia suggested, “The idea of a central bank-issued digital currency is very promising though issues around digital counterfeiting will need to be addressed."

AP Collaborates with Blockchain Journalist Firm for Improved Ethics

The US-based not-for-profit news agency the Associated Press (AP) announced on Tuesday that it would join blockchain-based journalism startup Civil in a content licensing partnership.
The collaboration will allow Civil to access all of AP’s national and international content for use in Civil’s related newsrooms, receiving a direct license for use by AP. In exchange, AP will receive CVL tokens which will be reportedly be used to promote objectivity and accuracy in its work through supporting Civil’s internal economy.
