The only reason Ethereum is the second largest cryptocurrency by market cap, is because of its price and current supply in circulation. Knowing that ETH's supply is virtually unlimited, it experiences inflation within the number of coins being circulated across the Blockchain. The greater the price and number of coins in circulation, the greater the market cap will be. Still, compared with other cryptocurrencies, Ethereum seems to be far behind in technological advancements. Other alternatives like EOS and Cardano have already made use of PoS for greater scalability and efficiency of dApps.

Such cryptocurrencies may not be as popular as ETH, but they have quite an advantage over it, waiting to be exploited by mainstream businesses and corporations alike. What Ethereum has, is first-mover advantage like Bitcoin. There's no doubt that it will rise again, given that Bitcoin will always be on a constant uptrend in price. Whenever Bitcoin goes up, so will ETH and several other altcoins in the market.

Therefore, it's only a matter of time before ETH rises back to $1,000 and beyond. Just my opinion
