I'm actually much more interested in seeing what the next-gen Radeon GPUs (Navi-2) are going to do mining-wise. In just getting back into mining recently, i was very surprised to see the huge jump in mining efficiency between the RX 500 and 5000 series (nearly 2x hash-rate on ETHash with only ~25% more power draw). If their Navi-2 cards can boost the eff rate even 20% more, it's going to make things very interesting, pricing aside.
This latest market rally is indeed very interesting. Seems much more sustained and supported than the couple spikes we saw since the '18 crash. If it keeps up, I expect we could start to see GPU shortages again soon. Maybe not to the degree of what happened back in 2017 but certainly there are some similarities. Current days to ROI on 5600 XT are just a bit more than 200 and if those and 5700 XT's go under 200 days, we could start to see some of the mass buying behavior that occurred in the 2017 boom.
I just got my first 5700 on a good deal and am leaning towards converting 1 of my 470 rigs over to full 5600XT/5700/5700XT before the Dec EOL for 4GB GPUs on ETHash comes.

could someone please refresh my memory on the proper procedure (order) for installing new AMD drivers on a 6x GPU rig (mine for 470's but it's probably the same for most Radeon).
Here's my situation. on a Win10 470-4GB x6 rig, I recently tried updating drivers... tried 19.12.2 & 20.4.2 i believe. here is what i did:
- ran DDU - installed new drivers - ran pixel patcher right after install completed (before reboot) - first attempt did not take, had some weird issues so tried again with diff driver version - 2nd attempt resulted in corrupting my W10 beyond repair so...
- last night i restored W10 and went into BIOS to switch my primary display to onboard graphics
One thing to note is that during both attempts, I had all GPUs still fully plugged into MB and PSU. I think this is where i might have went wrong.
Question 1: do i need to unplug all GPUs while installing drivers, then only plug them back in after driver install is complete?
Question 2: do i still need to run pixel-patcher with more current versions of AMD drivers? I was always using this when using v17 & v18 drivers but wondering if this is still required with their v19 & v20 drivers.

this works for me, currently on nvidia software is easy, no need to plug and unplug cards. when some anomaly with rigs happen, i have space reduce to 2 cards up to 1 card per rig. to observe PSU, riser, cards. when things are fine they consolidate again to 3x cards per rig..imagine doing that with 6,8 or 12 cards? LOL my setup is high density 3x high end GPU, 1200W/1300W PSU. ..i still have some working 2013 GPU risers and my undying second hand purchased 80gb sata HDDs hahaha

He is stubborn as are most sticking with windows.
Although I am running my xmr rigs on windows.
3 ryzen 9 3900x 1 ryzen threadripper 3960x 1 ryzen theeadripper3970x
btw my simple mining ⛏ is whaling i have seven rigs using 21 cards
I will add one more rig
it will bring me to: 25 cards. almost no work to manage them.
eth was up to 430 usd today. i hope this lasts fingers crossed.

Anyone here know how to mine with Ubuntu 16.04 with AMD 4GB GPUs?
Basically Windows 7 no longer works...
Tried Ubuntu 16.04 and it works but the main GPU0 needs to be Primary display on the motherboard because if I make it "onboard" then Ubuntu fails load, basically endless login screen, with "PCIe" as primary display its load no problem.
I would used SMOS but I need to use a Wifi adapter. Any way to get wifi to work on SMOS?

My guess is OS was installed without onboard enabled and/or no monitor connected to it.

Question 1: do i need to unplug all GPUs while installing drivers, then only plug them back in after driver install is complete?
Its best to start with 1, and then plug them in 1 by one if you're unsure of the cards being good. If they're all new its fine to just plug them all in. Question 2: do i still need to run pixel-patcher with more current versions of AMD drivers? I was always using this when using v17 & v18 drivers but wondering if this is still required with their v19 & v20 drivers.
Yes, you still need to. Also dont use the ver 20 drivers, stick to 19 or older. Btw since you are using windows, you wont be able to mine eth with 4 gb cards, you would need to switch to something like simpleminingOS.

windows is like witchcraft. Sometimes the answer is rebooting 4 times while under a full moon - other times it is switching gpu pci slot places and rebooting. Sometimes DDU breaks windows on its own. Good luck. If you feel a bit tired of it, try just removing one GPU and having a 5 card rig instead of 6. I dont know about you guys but the 4-5 year old stuff is still going strong (psu, mobos, gpu, risers etc). Probably going to get 5600XT or 5700 depending on hash/price ratio. Whats the beef on the new AMD top tier navi ? Lets me guess, its gonna be "ray tracing" this or that Excessive summer heat is almost over, time for mining to rev up.

It's still in the box since it's too hot here for me to turn on another rig. I was actually thinking about getting 1-2 more but seeing your comment, i will likely hold off until I can get this one up and running and see how bad it is. I guess if it is bad, it makes sense why really only this and an iffy ASRock 5700 are currently available through retailers. I'm really starting to track 5600 XT & 5700 XT closely now. Will be interesting to see what happens.

I tried again 2 days ago but with v20.2 and it screwed things up again after running pixel patcher. Seeing your comments about staying with v19 drivers, i will definitely stick with that on future attempts. At this point, it's gonna be too hot here to try to run that rig anyway but i actually end up trying SMOS on this rig since it didnt seem this attempt at a windows reset took. I will just have to swap rooms with another rig that is close to a Cat5 outlet and that's not going to be an easy task lol. Also... I am able to mine fine with 6x 4GB cards on my ASRock mobos since it was easy to change the primary display over to Onboard GFX. Still cant get the stupid Biostar boards to do the same but got 1 running with my sole 470 8GB in the main slot and the other one is going to house my recently purchased 5700, so once it cools down I should be able to have those up and running.

Hey! This thing might actually enable me to get my pesky rig onto SMOS! I got that PowerLine adapter but after reading the docs, i realized that it only works on the same electrical circuit. Since none my my rigs are, it won'e help me as I had hoped so it's going back to Amazon. However, I think this wi-fi to ETHernet will be exactly what i need, so thanks for posting the link! And yeah, even now ETH still holding pretty solidly around $440, which i will gladly take. Although it does unfortunately look like reward per block is dropping back down now but even so, this environment is by far the best we miners have had since the glory days of 2017!

I am tempted to switch to mining ETH directly vs Nicehash. ETH is up quite a bit, payout even for 2 ETH per block currently... the tx is huge - probably due to the that DEFI explosion - per tx needs as much as 8-9$ worth of gas/gwei! https://etherscan.io/block/10658796I am testing a rig to do dual mining, ETH and Zilica

I have four of them 55 mhs 110 watt. I bought two first and they worked well. I had 4 of those cheap msi and the rig crashed over and over could have been bad luck though. I think they use weaker memory than the micron stuff the asrock and msi gaming x use

Finally got the 4GB GPUs to work on Ubuntu 16.04. The trick was to do "./amdgpu-pro-install --px" when in onboard mode and it installed the drivers correctly.
Now the issue I am getting is "How the hell do you undervolt these AMD Polaris GPUs in Ubuntu"?
Basically with Windows all I used was WattTool to offset the voltage. In Ubuntu there is no such tool. There is "OhGodAtool" but it can only set clocks and doesn't set the voltage. So it seems that only way is to undervolt in bios correct? Wrong. Nothing seems to work.
I tried SRB and PBE. I used constant values like 900mV, I used those dynamic values like 65288, and after a dozen or so reboots, the voltage still doesn't change. Tried those Polaris bios modding guides and none of them seem to actually work.
Any idea if just setting -cvddc in Phoenix miner will work? I doubt it since the -cclock and -mclock failed to even work.
