I still felt 300-350 was a good score to defend as they know that England don't even have enough time as mostly they bowl 80-90 overs and they have chances of picking up wickets too so 398 is far from achieving in one day when Australia themselves took 1.5 days to get those runs.
The main reason Australia took a safe route is that they have Jason Roy in the team who will score at a high pace and if he gets going any score is reachable and with Joe Root, Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes in the team if the total looks approachable they might go for the win and Australia cannot risk that, so is the main reason they delayed the declaration. Lyon is getting good purchase from the wicket and it is interesting to see how England will survive the next few sessions. I think you meant Australia. Anyway
I meant England as i wanted to see their approach on reaching that total on the final day, teams who like to dare will go for the win as they have some explosive batsmen and if they loose wickets then they will defend till evening .

Now England seem to be doubting the umpires every time when they get out and it's but natural. Everyone has lost their trust on them lol
Now they are playing so badly that even a score of 150-200 seems unreal. Now England's only hope is Stokes after which wickets will keep tumbling and Australia would win. Lyon has taken 3 wickets in each innings now and this time dangerous players.
Whatever is the result, MoM is fixed as of now and that's Smith lol

Headlines In Progress : Mighty World champion lost the first test match of Ashes 2019
This title will be relevant only in England but the rest of the world the headline will be " the fluke world champions" somehow managed to draw the test match as they are playing a really defensive game and i am not sure how strong the defense of Buttler and Stokes will be and how much patience they have to defend like that. If they loose the focus then Australia will go in for the kill and then the headline will change . Whatever is the result, MoM is fixed as of now and that's Smith lol
Any site giving odds right now for the MoM, if so i would like to wage a bet on that now . EDIT: Damn England lost 7 wickets and three more wickets and Australia wrap the first match.

Any site giving odds right now for the MoM, if so i would like to wage a bet on that now . LOL the odd will be 1/1000 :-P Anyway, I do not see any hope left for England in this test. They are 7 down. Stokes was the 7th. Moin can not do much with Woakes. 100 runs partnership? Bat till the end of the day? I do not see any of it is happening. Australia 1 - 0 ahead against the ODI world cup champions. LOL This is funny from a chatbox: user1: England playing with 10 men and a non-functioning Moeen Ali.... user2: malfunction

^ Smith is the man. I am watching the match since the morning and it was good to see how Smith and Head batted the entire first season. Just few overs before the launch Stokes got Head but now Wade is doing the job of Head.
Smith got his century. Australians are in very good position. I think once they will have a lead of 250 runs then they will start playing for big scores so that they can give England enough runs to chase also they can have enough time to all out England. Just need to have a rainless finish.
The first Test is looking very good for Australia now.
Edit: I think England needed Anderson. They are missing him.
England have lost 9 nine wickets and now Australia needs only 1 wicket to win. Only a miracle can save England now. This test match was really worth watching and it's a perfect start to the Ashes. Edit: Smith misses the winning catch.

What a horrible performance on the last day. They don't seem to even make 150 at this point and now their loss will be by 250+ runs lol. Poor Woakes is left alone to bat and atleast he shouldn't give away strike to to Anderson so that he can get to 150. Lyon proved to be the lion of the game. He's eating away all the Eng batsmen :=P Any site giving odds right now for the MoM, if so i would like to wage a bet on that now . But you would need to bet before the match not at the end ROFL :=D Edit: Woakes gone, match gone, England's unbeatable record gone and the loss is not small...251 runs

The non-deserving World cup champions have lost by 251 Runs. The big margin of this defeat will further raise questions on England performance

The non-deserving World cup champions have lost by 251 Runs. The big margin of this defeat will further raise questions on England performance Not to mention at one stage in the Australian's first innings they took 8 wickets very quickly and Australia were struggling with that very low score. If Australia could bat as expected in the first Innings then we would see an innings defeat for England. Poor England. This was meant to happen. Congratulations to the Australian team.

There is one record which is broken in this test match. Aussie has win at Edgbaston first time since 2001. They play Ashes every year and it is big win at Edgbaston. The strong Aussie will be more confident now at the Lords making things more difficult for the host nation.

The non-deserving World cup champions have lost by 251 Runs. The big margin of this defeat will further raise questions on England performance It is a known fact that England does have a good limited overs team and the best team in those formats in their history and to play test cricket you really need the patience and skills to bat for a longer period of time and there is no field restrictions like they have in limited overs cricket, so in order to bat for a longer period you need to have proper technique and temperament and if you are not on that class it will be difficult to bat for a longer period. The ball was turning on the final day and Lyon took full advantage of the pitch condition and bowled out England and that too after England having a first innings lead .

Congratulations to the Australian team.
Great surprise from Australia by turning the match. That's what Ashes is all about. I doubted the Australian bowling unit at the start but I guess I was wrong. I mean limiting England below 150 score which had such good batting line-up is really something. Plus on the home ground . Great play from Lyon,Cummins, Smith and Wade as well. Smith holding the responsibility to lead from the back in both innings really changed the match.

Yay! Smith finally won MoM He played brilliantly and next was Lyon who kept taking wickets. England must be cursing themselves for not taking Smith's wicket in the first innings else the case would have been different all together. They needed someone like smith to get them to a decent score but even Burns, Stokes and Woakes failed the team. The non-deserving World cup champions have lost by 251 Runs. The big margin of this defeat will further raise questions on England performance Worse is they lost in their own homeland. They still have 4 more chances to prove themselves and I hope we don't see such miserable performances from their batsmen.

As expected, Lyon destroyed the English batting lineup thanks to the pitch and Cummins aided him. It seemed like England were never in this game in the 2nd innings.
They don't have many test match winning players in their team while Australia has tons in their camp.
Making a bold guess here: Australia to qualify for the finals of the world test championship in 2021. Odds for 2 years futures prediction should be : 10.0 or more.

What a turn around in the match has happened as initially it was England who look so stronger and then as soon as OZ started batting in second inning suddenly match just reversed on their side and possible what OZ could have lost it eventually due to superb play of display they had won it.

Nathan Lyon bowled beautifully today, after his pathetic performance during the first innings. More than a victory for Australia, I was baying for an English defeat. What happened during the world cup finals left a bitter aftertaste and now I am happy after watching England losing by such a large margin.
The next test is scheduled at Lord's. That pitch may offer more support for the fast bowlers and I hope the Australians will include Mitchell Starc in the place of either Peter Siddle or James Pattinson.

I also wasn't sure about the bowling attack Australia went in with as Strac is Australia's number strike bowler and for him to not be selected I thought Australia would struggle to bowl England out twice but they have been able to achieve this which is a surprise to me. I did mention that I thought this was a second rate Australian team but they have proved me wrong. Smith was the man that changed it all for Australia and gave them the momentum and now it will be interesting to see if the Australian selectors make any changes to the team as Siddle and Warner didn't perform all that well in my opinion. I think it could be a good time to bring Strac in as Strac will really boost the Australian Bowling attack for the second test. Warner most likely gets a second chance to prove himself before a change is made but if he fails again in the second test I think the selectors really need to think about bringing Finch in.

I thought Strac had some sort of injury to miss out the first test match, if that is not the case i am not sure what the selectors were thinking, either way the return of Smith in the team has made the difference as he is one of the best players in the longer format of the game and the team was missing his presence for a long time because of his suspension, if he was not in the team then the results would have being different and Lyon bowled really well to finish things off. That was some epic choking by England today, Australia looked dead & buried after their first innings. England should be ashamed of their batting performance today.
Look at the one day strike rate of Jason Roy, Jos Buttler and Jonny Bairstow they all have a strike rate of above 100 which is incredible but to have the patience to bat longer in the longer version is the real test and they proved they do not have that to save the team. Virender Sehwag is the only player who had a similar strike rate like the players mentioned above in the one day format and still made huge scores in test matches.

I agree. I was baffled with the move to select Pattinson over Starc and many claim that they did this for some sort of long term of goals, but I don't agree with this move. Starc is in prime form currently and sidelining him at this point is stupidity. Look at the one day strike rate of Jason Roy, Jos Buttler and Jonny Bairstow they all have a strike rate of above 100 which is incredible but to have the patience to bat longer in the longer version is the real test and they proved they do not have that to save the team. Never knew the statistic about Sehwag. Crazy. I wasn't surprised to see Roy, Buttler and Bairstow underperform. This is why I miss watching players like Alistair Cook who could have saved them in this situation.
