If you ask me, it will never happen at all, because ETH is not strong enough to fight Bitcoin for first place in the market. Personally, I think Bitcoin will always be number one in crypto...
At present, there is no crypto better than Bitcoin. honestly, I have seen many altcoins trying for it, such as ethereum, BCH, BSV, XRP, and others, but until now, in terms of price, even needs, bitcoin is still in the top position. Well, I don't think that altcoin will be at the top of the crypto for this year, even for the next year.

It'll definitely be hard to topple the original, of course.

But on that note, any thoughts about when any altcoin could possibly be a legit contender for the #1 position in crypto?

Also, do you think it will happen (it's only a matter of time) or it will never happen at all (as some may have mentioned already)?

To maybe rephrase the question by OP somehow:

Will Ethereum be taking 1st place in 2020 (in terms of "percentage price value increase" from its initial price value position at the start of 2020)?  Huh

Even in this case, I think ETH will definitely give in to someone, because ETH, although it can grow in value, there are still coins that always grow stronger than ETH.

True!

Gone are the days wherein any supposed promises or hype would cause FOMO (unless your BTC), of course.

Nowadays, the proof should definitely be in the pudding already and if you want to be #1 (or at least high above the list to possibly challenge BTC), you must find a technical reason to back you up (to prove to everyone), that you're the next big thing in crypto (after BTC was created)!

In percentage terms, ethereum is now really growing even better than bitcoin. Apparently, the expected appearance of improvements to Ethereum 2.0 in this coin is affecting soon. Or maybe some other factors. In any case, everything is going well so far.

Obviously, if we compare them from their respective ATH to the current price now, you'll see that bitcoin has a better recovery rate.
ETH is can't cross $200 yet, but its ATH was $1400, so that was only 14% from its ATH.. while bitcoin is at 40% or more already.. so you can see the big difference.

Its almost many years has passed bitcoin are still in the number one spot, And yes no one in crypto for now could be surpass it. Even if the therium are cant go into a number one spot. And maybe etherium will be still in a number two in crypto because of these was to hard to climb and get the 1st place. Ill think we know about these and maybe in a future theres a chance for etherium to be a number one.

Bitcoin is always chosen by many investors and of course brings better profits because if this coin loses more than 80% value, it will certainly not be dared to invest in the crypto market. I think Bitcoin is still a potential coin for everyone and recently the coin is starting to rise. If compared to the previous month, this is a very good time for you to invest now.

Just like that, ETH recently breached the $200 mark already!  Cool

I don't think Ethereum has any chance of overtaking Bitcoin, I don't think anyone will ever be able to overtake Bitcoin, because everyone depends on Bitcoin.

Bitcoin will always and be number one,  ethereum Cannot be compared to bitcoin,  it will remain behind bitcoin,  the market cap alone is overwhelming, I think ethereum needs to step it's game up before other altcoins overtake it,  such as Xrp or perhaps bnb

Ethereum has been steadily on the rise for a good while now, and this first half of Q1 2020 has proven that they have brought that same energy into the new decade. They have started 2020 with a bang, more than doubling in value in just 2 months.

There are quite a few factors that have come into play to make this a winning year for Ethereum and here are just a few: https://thecoinshark.net/en/5-reasons-why-ethereum-is-winning-in-2020/amp/

What do you think we can expect to see for the rest of the year?

What we can search from Cryptocurrency instead others stock exchange. I think we can now send money without third person. Ethereum also can do it there is no privacy exists who makes any transaction. Even in next bullrun Ethereum can't king of altcoins.

XRP will overtake the second place of ETH sooner or later, Buterin can't handle the project as in like old years. The marketcap shows how strong competition between the altcoins for second trophy but the winner will be the XRP, in my humble opinion.
Xrp had tried it,  it didn't last up to 3 months being number two,  that was when it has a rapid pump to $3+ , with Eth staking 2.0 coming up,  Ethereum might increase significantly and thus there will be exponential increase in the market cap which will make it very difficult for Xrp to superceed

I would not doubt as both are having a huge amount of coins in circulation and battling for the top spot and if the price rallies then it is possible and XRP can come out on top because there is a use case and some businesses are using their platform and that is not the case with ETH and Vitalik Buterin was over confident that he could solve the scaling issue and we are yet to witness that.

Yes no doubt about that bitcoin always being a number one spot, So it is impossible to etherium to surpass it that have so much high volume in the market. Thats true some other altcoins can surpass etherium just like XRP we seen this altcoin become a number 2 spot but it was short of time only and back again into a 3rd spot.

Don't it's never surpass the Bitcoin in any way because Bitcoin has the unique features and pioneer in the digital currency concept. It has already accepted as the global currency in the world wide. So, Ethereum will never take the challenge for the first place.

If the bitcoin dominance will likely to decrease then the second position or the Ethereum will have a chance to replace bitcoin someday. I make it someday because in this year 2020, there is zero possibility that eth will likely to replace bitcoin in it's current position because the bitcoin dominance is still very high which is more than 60%.

And frankly speaking, eth is very dependent to bitcoin price therefore the chances for eth to come on top is very less or I say zero percent if we will talking about this year 2020.

That is exactly why even if there is a better recovery rate for the past month or so in ethereum, that doesn't mean anything. The first spot is bitcoins and it will always be bitcoins unless something major happens, the price of bitcoin could only drop immensely while others are not dropping only if there is some technological problem.

Bitcoin is known to be rock solid in blockchain and in technology but lets say someone finally figures out a way to just steal anyone's bitcoin whenever they want to, that would cause bitcoin to drop in price a lot because nobody would want it, everybody would be afraid theirs will be stolen as well. Unless something that catastrophic happens, there is no way we gonna get bitcoin in anywhere under first spot, it will always stay there.

That would mean the system is not secured, there is not reason to invest with bitcoin anymore.
however, the market gain a high trust from investors because they believe it will never happy, we are a billion dollars market cap now, it's a lot of money and that would prove how investors trust crypto, so no, don't think the system will be compromise, even satoshi can't.

Yes, that's right. The reason is because Ethereum is a team that has many teams holding coins and sharks cannot have the right to use it to manipulate. Besides, alts are now often paired with Bitcoin, which is a common trading habit in the crypto market. and so people often buy bitcoins to hold rather than use ETH.
