Congratulations to our very own Hidilyn Diaz! a great woman of determination and she made our country proud. After 97 years without any gold medal for the Olympics, she has broken that long year and was the first-ever to get the gold medal in Tokyo Olympics. It's just sad that despite she had won the gold already, there are making rounds that she's being used with political motives while she's unaware of it.
Yeah, I'm a bit late to the party but I do congratulate Hidilyn for her win, it's a big honor but at the same time, the people that were talking trash of her shouldn't be allowed to congratulate them. I mean, people were mad that she was asking for monetary help from the private sector. We also have to congratulate Margielyn, she's a darling of the Olympics with her positive attitude.
It's okay if those people that trash-talked her a few years ago will congratulate her. She deserves to be congratulated but even if there are no congratulations from them, she remains the first Olympic gold medalist in our country. I think when she has asked from the private sector, help and donations came into her, and there go the rewards that she's about to reap when she comes back home. I like the positivity of Margielyn, she's just enjoying while she's there and despite her run ends, she's being liked by many as the woman of sportsmanship.

How controversial will it be if ROC (Russian Olympic Committee) won the 2021 Olympics.  Roll Eyes  The ROC won the Gold medal for "Women's Artistic Gymnastics" today... so countries like the USA and the UK got Silver and Bronze. Also, these countries might be close to the winner of the Olympics and they might have even won.. if Russia did not compete in the Olympics.

The bookmakers should actually "ignore" the ROC (Russian Olympic Committee) position on the podium in all the events where they are participating and just give it to the Silver & Bronze positions. (shifting them a position up on the podium)

Do you think it is fair for a banned country to participate as individuals to bypass the ban?

I think it's fair and probably best possible solution in this case. They have to participate without flag and athletes can't hear Russian anthem after winning Golden medal.
I think it would be unfair if clean athletes from Russia wouldn't be allowed to participate. They shouldn't response for offenses that they didn't made.

It's also interesting to see that despite the Russian athletes are not competing on behalf of the country, but of the Russian Olympic Committee, they are very well qualified.
I think they will drop in 2nd week a bit. Lot of medals will be given in athletics competition, but Russia have just few athletes there.

Yeah, there's a fierce competition for gold medals among the Japan, U.S. and China. According to some sources, the Japanese Olympic Committee has set a 30-gold target for Tokyo 2020. No one's sure if they can or will reach it, but given the talent among the Japanese youth and the history of recent success for the country, it seems a fair and reasonable expectation.

The competition is growing high among Japan, USA and China. 30 gold target is quite a possible number considering the ongoing strength of Japan. If Japan reach the 30 target surely Japan will come atleast at the second position on the medals table. Last time it has took only 12 gold, and this time already it has got 10 gold which is really a big thing.

Yes its a reasonable goal they have the quality and playing at home is a huge help and i have seen japanese athletes are more motivated and now i see why and we can expect them to get a place in the podium i will be rooting for them because i want this year competition to be a competitive one and close performance from top ranked countries.

I just watched a couple of hours of surfing, as I've almost never seen any of it live and it's making its debut at the Olympics this time. I have to say that I am quite disappointed with the entertainment value of this sport. One round lasts 30 minutes and most of the time nothing happens, as the surfers wait for a suitable wave. So it often happens that you don't see any action for 7-8 minutes. I don't think the sport is 100% fair either, because the athletes also need a lot of luck to catch the right wave. If the opponent catches a big wave and can show a jump and you only have small waves, then you almost can't win no matter how good you are.

That's why I also think it's an unsuitable sport to bet on, because you just can't predict nature, at least when the competition is in the ocean.

If they really want this competition to be part of the games then they are going to need to do the same they did for the kayak competition, some time before the kayak competition was performed at a river but due to the variation on the current some participants faced more difficult conditions while others faced a more easy ride.

This was changed and now they all face the same conditions in an artificial river, so something similar could be made for surfing even if I think it will be too expensive to do all of that just for a single sport.

(...) American football (rugby).

Just a note: American football is not rugby.
Despite having originated from rugby, American football is very different in style of play and rules.

This article explains these differences well:
https://www.diffen.com/difference/American_Football_vs_Rugby

Oh, friend! Did you really think that I was not aware of these differences (thanks for the link anyway)? In my country, both versions of rugby are extremely unpopular, and out of habit I called American football the word it is called in my country. I think everyone understands what kind of sport we are talking about if we are talking about football in America without using the word soccer.

I see an MMA betting market for the Olympics here at Best Fight Odds.  These are fiat sports betting sites tho.  I haven’t checked if they’re available at crypto bookies.

https://www.bestfightodds.com/

I totally wasn’t even aware MMA is in the Olympics.  Cheesy  I think the ‘sport’ is more closer to cage prize fighting than an actual sport.  But that’s just me.

It is impressive how the Russian beat the one considered best in the world, the United States, the truth is that the routine that made her win was impeccable, I do not understand much about the evaluation criteria of this sport, but she looked very impeccable in her execution.

Despite the difficulties for the preparation of athletes due to the pandemic, it has been shown that the level has been increasing, it is very high, some countries have surprised, congratulations for Russia.

Despite losing Simone Biles after just one vault, the US women's team wins silver in the women's team all-around to extends their medal-winning streak in the event to eight straight Olympics.

Despite the difficulties for the preparation of athletes due to the pandemic, it has been shown that the level has been increasing, it is very high, some countries have surprised, congratulations for Russia.

I was rooting for Simone Biles to snatch golds in this Olympics, but seems that it will not happen anymore.
Let us just respect what she is going thru, because it is said that medical issue was the reason why she pulled out.
But I believe, it is more of mental struggle on her. And it is hard to go thru that phase and compete where everybody is watching.
Maybe, we will see her again in other competition, if in case, she will not announce her retirement to this sports.

Well done Hidilyn Diaz! Enjoy your PHP30 Million (~$600K) reward.

And the reward now is estimated at Php 50 Million + several perks and benefits from other companies including an own condo unit.

That will encourage PH athletes more. However, the process is really tough as aside from financial aid, they also need to use their own money to build their progress just like the other PH athlete Eumir Marcial voiced out. Anyways, he's almost close to his Gold medal dream, and his next match is tomorrow, 29th.

Let's see if he can also bring one.

That is the problem with Philippines Olympic Committee, there's so much politics and even Diaz has to beg for private sponsors just to sustain her training and win the gold for the country.

Anyway, well done for their, thru adversities, she proves that every dream is possible and she did it for the Philippines to have their first ever gold medal after almost 100 years.

Unfortunately thats true. They're not giving financial support for the athletes and had to beg for private sponsors just to sustain the trainings and expenses for the journey to olympics. Lack of support is often the problem here.

Indeed its an honor and she is now part of the philippine history as the first olympics athlete to take home a gold medal.

That's how they treat our athletes and if they won, they'll take the credit from the athlete and say good things about their management.

This is the first ever gold medal, and we already saw a big support from the private companies who are giving huge incentives to Diaz, I wonder if they'll offer the same if other athletes takes another gold especially Nesthy who are already secured at least a bronze medal.

Wow in swimming the Hungarian Kristof Milak shone in the 200 meters in butterfly style, I really admire this style because for me it is the most difficult of the 4 swimming styles, it takes a lot of strength and speed to do those 4 pools and take the gold . .

Quote
Milak finished with a time of 1:51.25. He holds the world record in the event, clocking in at 1:50.73 in 2019.

Japan's Tomoru Hunda, 19, finished with silver and Italy's Federico Burdisso won bronze.
Source: https://edition.cnn.com/world/live-news/tokyo-2020-olympics-07-27-21-spt/index.html

This is another of my favorite sports, actually one of the most complete sports that in my opinion we should all know how to swim, that is why this sport apart from the fact that I practiced it for years, I´m passionate about it and even more so in the Olympic Games, due to my time zone, I have to watch them later because Japanese times all games happen at bedtime all night.

Well, there's always politics in every organization but I think it was lessen with the takeover of the new admin. The bigger problem lies on the budget allocated for the entire sports industry and that starts from Congress.

~

They were given funds by the Government and, AFAIK, it's much higher than what athletes were receiving from previous administrations. Unfortunately, it's still lower to what athletes in developed countries get. Let's also point out that training facilities in the country were improved.

But enough of that...let's focus on the historic victory and look forward to the future of Philippine sports. I hope they get a bigger chunk of the national budget after this inspirational win.

Here in India, the sole medal winner (Mirabai Chanu) is being showered with rewards as well. The Manipur state government provided a cheque of ₹10,000,000, while the central government gave ₹20,000,000 (in total, around $400,000). This time the medal winners received better rewards when compared to the previous editions. Back in 2008 and 2012, it was mostly token rewards of around $50,000. Still, the Indian performance is disappointing, given the enormous population of the country (1.4 billion).

If I'm not mistaken she got a silver medal, the prize she got was quite large maybe with the money she could improve her financial, as I know weightlifting a sport that doesn't have much competition and doesn't really give a big income.
Developing countries including my country have always considered investing money to develop sports as a waste, there will be many official who say it is better to use it for the poor.

I am not surprised by your post. Here in India, the opposition (left-wing) politicians have consistently opposed development work, including the construction of high-speed rail and highways, saying that the money could be better spent on feeding the poor (as if they don't know that the majority of the tax revenue is already being used for providing handouts). These guys need to understand that spending $400,000 or $500,000 on an athlete inspires millions of others who will take part in these sports and increase their fitness levels. In turn, this will lead to billions of USD in savings for the government in the health sector every year. But unfortunately, some politicians know only about freebies and handouts.
