Here in India, we import close to 85% of the crude oil that is consumed (remaining 15% is produced within India), and the recent developments have benefitted us immensely. Even after taking in to account freight and insurance, we are getting Russian crude at a discount of around $10 per barrel. India imported 2.1 million bpd of Russian crude last month, which accounts for 44% of the overall imports. And the story doesn't end there. Since Russian crude is heavily discounted, the Indian refineries are now demanding similar discounts from Iraq as well. We are getting Iraqi crude also at discounted rates (not as large as the discounts on Russian crude though). At the same time, Indian refineries are now exporting huge quantities of refined products such as diesel to foreign nations, boosting their own profits as well as the forex reserves.

The FOB price is around $65, and another $20 per barrel gets added to it in the form of freight and insurance. So in total we are paying around $85 per barrel for the Urals crude. The crude from Saudi costs around $92 per barrel, including freight and insurance. So the difference is now very minimal. And although some of the banks are refusing to make the payments, there are plenty of alternate options available.

In these cases usually the purchase is either done under the radar or through third parties at higher prices.

Crude oil was trading at $40 per barrel in 2020. Now it is trading at $80. So even after taking in to account of all the discounts from Russia, and the profits from exporting refined fuel, here in India we are facing a very difficult situation. Only the US and OPEC nations are benefiting from this war, as they are making tens of billions of USD in profit each months by exporting LNG and crude oil to the EU. But countries like India are suffering, as a result of increased prices for LNG, crude oil, wheat, coal and sunflower oil. And obviously, countries like the US who are benefitting from this war doesn't want the conflict to end anytime soon.

Proxies related to the Russian government setup a ghost company called Gatik Ship Management in India almost one year ago. Since then, this ghost company has amassed 61 oil tankers (fleet growing with each passing month) and is now shipping a majority of the Russian crude oil that is destined to India. As far as I know, this ghost company is controlled by a few Russian oligarchs. India is receiving Russian crude at a discount of $5 to $10 per barrel (after including freight and insurance) and a large part of the difference between FOB price and DAP price is eaten up by Russian proxies.
