No I won't classify successful gambler as an addict and these are the reasons. First, if you are called a gambler addict it could mean you are not successful in gambling because if you understand the word addict or the way that the society identify it, it is not what is attached with someone positive and the society always have good names for what is good, people associate with success and not failure. What I think about addict is failure even if you will see some addict to be successful but rare.

Another valid point is for someone to be successful, they would have been operating professionally and keeping to the rules of gambling like understanding that if it is gambling then luck is involved, play with limits and not play just as your fingers push you to and all of these are part of the characteristics of an addict. In essence, they are different. Successful gamblers are not always addicts because they could be playing with limits and guiding their emotions.

Most likely, they are referred as lucky gamblers and most of them are professional gamblers that play poker, for example, those in tournaments. There are lottery winners who I do not consider successful winners and you can consider them addicts as they are playing with their luck. It’s more on a passion or hobby instead of addiction is the right term on this case since addiction is always incorporate with compulsive gambling while passion is being good on what you are doing which is on this case is gambling. You can’t win on gambling if you are addicted since you will never stop playing. All successful gambler usually know when to stop and play to control their bankroll.

It’s very hard to be on profit in gambling while playing continuosly due to house edge. Most of the successful is focus on the quality of their bets for a better accuracy than placing multiple bets with less analysis.

I think house edge is not just the only reason that an addict or consistent bet player would fail. Yes casinos are designed in the way that you will lose more than you will profit, therefore a consistent player is already design to fail more times except with the exception to win jackpot when it is his luck to win. So naturally, house edge is concluded already on that reason for losing but because addict and consistent player does that with sole aim to chase back the loses, so they will lose more but successful player is more relaxed to play less times and even when in loss, he doesn't allow the emotion to have a better part of him.

     -  As for me, I don't often play gambling, there are times when I win, but it doesn't happen often. But I usually always lose playing in a casino. Also, I don't gamble every day either. If I have a lot of money I only play there honestly.

Maybe as part of their process of becoming a successful gambler, they might come first noticing themselves as an addict. Those are just momentary failures and character flaws. That overtime they developed a correct mindset in which brought them to successful trading. Those failures will serve as their frame of reference for them not to do again being a successful gambler. Things like over risking, overgambling, also putting alcohol or smoke in their gambling.

It's like starting in a losing game then creating their own path correcting their own mistakes then becoming successful.

So, it seems what you want to mean is if you lose gambles, you are a gambling addict. I don't think so.
Because for me, what being a gambling addict is you can't control it. So, if we say, most of our gambling is winnings and we can't control it, we can't control winning and gambling every time, I can tell it's still an addiction.
For example, you cant control your gambling urges or irritable when you are not gambling, I can say it's addiction.

To me the term "successful gambler" and "addicted to gambling" are incompatible, because if a person ends up winning money during their gambling sessions and quits, when we could call that person a successful gambler. Because they know when to stop in order to enjoy their money. I think this mostly apply on poker players and other games which need some skill in order to win. Not only luck.

On the other hand, if a person is addicted to gambling, then it does not matter much whether he earns money in one of their sessions, that money will likely go back into the casino's trunk, since he would not know when or how to stop.

They might be winning at this point but if it is gambling addiction then things would fall eventually. I agree with the effects to function on a daily basis. The question is, how would a gambler define success? is it on the amount won? For sure it won't be limited on such aspect alone. There's more to determine if you are already successful or not.

For addiction (regardless of what it is) is a person's loss of control over something, characterized by the compulsive practice of needing to do that. It can be called addiction when there is damage or worsening of the person's quality of life due to the negative consequences of the practice of a certain behavior.

An addicted gambler will never be successful in gambling, because he does not know how to manage his time and money, and even if he wins a lot, the addiction will make him lose everything quickly.

Successful players love the game, but they are not addicted.
