hello.

i have a questions for solo mining regarding to the machine we've rented:
- is it ok when the rented rig is down for (let's say) one hour while solo mining?
- does it have any effects in our shares?

appreciate for any info's.

regards.

Imagine solo mining as you standing in line at the supermarket pulling lottery tickets, scratching them real fast, then checking to see if they are winners. If your miner is down, you're not pulling tickets. If you're not pulling tickets you can't find a winner.

That is NOT ok. Again, rented rigs - well, that's the nature of the beast. Free money for the renter, but the buyer suffers.

well, need to start all over with other address then, this is not good for the renter Smiley

Thank you for your info.
wish you all the best of luck.
Wait there seems to be some confusion here in your understanding. The one hour you're not mining, you're not mining - that's the bad part. But it has absolutely no effect on the rest of the time you're mining. No share effect, no cumulative effect, no harm, zero.

... and I'll add ... also note that the rental site also gets paid no matter what happens.
The rental sites have no incentive to care either ...
The rental sites could keep statistical information to help with that ... ...

So you're saying there's a market for a trustworthy, transparent hash rental site?

After giving it more thought... Couldn't any pool be manipulated in a similar way?

no the problem with renting hash is that unless you see the gear and look at its software you don't know if the mining client rejects  winning

shares.  So the diff now is 54xxx    I have a 1 ph farm I hate f2pool.

So all my gear has custom mining software that rejects  shares over 60xx over 65xxx over 70xxx

I rent it all to nicehash.   I tell WBF1  rent 1 ph from nicehash and point it at f2pool .

I get paid
nicehash gets paid
WBF1 gets paid from f2pool

f2pool has to pay shares to WBF1  and loses many blocks over time .   since that custom software is reject ½ to ⅔ of the blocks.

I don't say this happens.
But it can happen.  There is no real way to stop this.

The most harm this can do is to f2pool as they are the biggest PPS pool around.

Now if you rent that defective hash (no proof it is bad)  and point it to ck's solo pool   your chance of winning a block will be reduced.

It is kind of a two edged sword as there is no question in my mind this helps to keep f2pool well under 50% of the network.

It is why I support nicehash some what since if they did not exist f2pool would have 0 reason to not expand.

Occasionally I point about 1 coin hash at f2pool.  If I get a really cheap rate I make a tiny bit of coin.  If the hash is bad I help keep f2pool in check.

I do keep stats on all the rentals I ever did at nicehash  I hit 3 blocks so far and I have not spent 75 btc to hit the 3 blocks.

That is a small sample but it is in nice-hashes favor that the hash they rent is pretty good.

That's why I'd never rent right there. You can't prove you're getting what you paid for. Why should they give you the blocks when they can keep what is today $5400 bucks USD and tell you "Nope, sorry. You didn't win. Please play again!"

$5400 is a great motive to cheat buyers if you're in a country far, far away. What are they going to do, cry about it?

You are misunderstanding a block withholding attack.  They don't steal the block solve reward, they withhold the block solve completely as if it never happened.  Do a little google search and you can read more about it.

I think he means (what I said) that they get paid no matter what - so that is "cheating buyers"

"All you need to confirm you are mining to your own address is to examine the coinbase and template sent to you over stratum."

How do you do that? Also, how do you know if you found a block or not?

cgminer will tell you if you found a block - the pool also will tell you, but independently - i.e. both cgminer and the pool know if a share 'could' be a block.

To look at the work being sent - you'd have to look at either the full debug log of cgminer or look at the work "sent across the wire"
It's just text json with the coinbase transaction in ascii hex.

I just pointed my S1, S3 and S5's at the pool, do I have to do anything with the difficulty or should I be good to go?  I'm not going through a proxy, each is pointed directly at the pool.

You run into the problem regardless of which rental site you utilize.  You are placing the trust in the rig owners and the rental site operators not to have malicious intent.  As Phil's example above shows, I can very easily guarantee that you and I would both get paid, but make the pool suffer.  Or as the case would be here in a solo pool, I can guarantee that I get paid, and you don't.

Ultimately, it's up to you to decide whether or not you trust the operators enough to pay them to utilize their gear.  Are there going to be people out there looking to scam you?  Always.  Are there also people out there who are providing an honest service?  Absolutely.

Exactly this. The only way to trust your results is to buy your own equipment. Seriously, it's not that expensive anymore. The chief concern is electricity cost, but there are ways around that by mining at work, mining at a hospital, an outdoor outlet somewhere, or using alternative energy. You can get free solar panels in some states. There's no reason not to save that gambled money and just buy your own miners anymore.

I am thinking what if you loaded up a van with miners and park it at the free charging station for electric cars?

LOL! I never thought of that. As long as there's a free plug and you're not blocking cars from charging (move when the plugs are full) you might get away with it. Have to have internet access though.

Mine at Jonny's Pool

Hey... if you're going to park your van full of miners near a charging station, why not piggyback on the wireless network from the Starbucks right there on the corner, too? Tongue

In all seriousness, owning your own hardware requires a bit more dedication than saying, "I'm going to try my luck and throw a bunch of rented hash at CK's pool."  In case 1, you're limited by how much available power you've got, cooling, all the standard crap associated with running your own hardware.  In case 2 it's just a few clicks.

Another benefit of the rentals is that you can drastically alter your hash rate again with only a few clicks.  Considerably harder to do that when you've got your own gear.

I think I'd laugh pretty hard if I saw some guy with a large van sitting in front of a few charging stations powering a bunch of miners.  Mobile data center!
